Obituary: Evelyn Stephens Conti passed away in the early morning hours of , 16, 2016. She was born 17, 1929 in Tampa, FL to Maud and Harold Gooding, Sr. She was predeceased by her brother, Harold Gooding, Jr., and former spouses Edward Conti and Carl Stephens. She is survived by her sister, Barbara (“Bobbie”) Day of Ft. Myers, FL, her daughter, Patricia (“Patsy”) Stephens Henneman, of St. Pete Beach, FL, and two granddaughters, Whitney Grim of Tampa, FL and Emily Grim of Atlanta, GA. Evelyn’s life was an example of grace, kindness, and an abiding love of animals. A lifelong horsewoman since her first riding lesson at the Tampa Yacht Club in 1942 (where, in later years, she went on to start her career as a horse trainer), Evelyn was known and respected on the local and national stage for her career in training champion American Saddlebred, hunter and jumper horses. She instructed a myriad of young people in the Tampa area (and beyond, in Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee) in the disciplines of hunt seat and saddle seat riding. The 1986 Gasparilla Charity Horse Show Trainer of the Year, among other accolades, and the consummate teacher, Evelyn treated each of her horses and pupils with great care, respect, and compassion. She believed that if a child had a desire to learn how to ride, they should have that opportunity, regardless of whether or not they could afford lessons. She had an immeasurably positive impact on the lives of many of her students, many of whom now own and operate their own stables and professional training centers. Evelyn’s impact as a horsewoman is a significant part of her legacy. In 2016, shortly before her passing, she was honored by the Mayor of South Pasadena, Florida for her community involvement, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Born in South Tampa, Evelyn graduated from H.B. Plant High School and received a biology degree in 1950 from Florida State Women’s (now Florida State University). She lived many of her twilight years in the house built by her father, Harold, surrounded by books and a lovely, if slightly wild, flower garden. An active member of her local Virginia Park neighborhood, Evelyn regularly assisted as a poll worker during election seasons and took great joy in visiting neighbors and the local library. Evelyn had a deep fondness for all animals, sharing her home with cherished Dobermans, Rottweilers, a Welsh Corgi, and the errant stray cat or squirrel over the years of her life. Evelyn’s spirit of gentleness, generosity, and passion has touched the lives of many, two-legged or four-legged alike. She is greatly missed by friends and family. Memorial contributions to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) are requested in lieu of flowers. Obituary: STEVENS, William Donald went to be with the Lord on 10, 2014. Bill was 93 years old. Bill was born in Charleston, West Virginia on 7, 1920. His parents were William Floyd Stevens and Elsie Mae Rivaud Stevens. Evangelism with an accent on youth was the life work of Bill Stevens. He started preaching when he was a freshman in high school. graduating from Bob Jones University, he was ordained as an Independent Baptist minister and worked on the staff of the Moody Bible Institute. He was an effective preacher, vocal soloist and also played the trumpet and musical saw. He was an itinerant evangelist for the eastern part of the U.S. from West Virginia to Michigan. He was the Vice-president of Youth for Christ International and directed the operation of the South Central Area of the United States from 1948 \ 1960. On 24, 1945, Bill married the love of his life, Sylvia Stanley and she worked with Bill as his accompanist as well as singing duets together. In 1960 Bill and Sylvia opened a Christian book store Charleston, West Virginia. The Bible Bookshop operated for 24 years and grew to three stores. Bill and Sylvia moved to Fort Lauderdale in the 1980s and both sang in the choir at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church as well as New Presbyterian Church. Bill was also a member of the session and music committee of the church for many years. He also developed TELECARE, a phone counseling ministry at Coral Ridge. spent their last 13 years together at John Knox Village in Pompano Beach. Sylvia was called home by the Lord 16, 2012. Bill was also predeceased by his parents, and brother Robert and wife Verna Mae as well as his sister Francis Ruth Stevens White and her husband Alton Duane White. He is survived by his nephews Robert and Kenneth Stevens in Clearwater; Steven White in Roanoke, Virginia; David White in Atlanta, Georgia; and niece Alice Mynette White Barnett in Greenville, SC. as well as their children. A Service will be held 1::30 pm on Sat. Sept. 13, 2014 at John Knox Village Auditorium. Bill will be interred in the Forest Lawn , Pompano Beach, FL. were entrusted to Mr. Larry Ott & Marge Muth, Kraeer , of Pompano Beach. under the direction of Kraeer and Cremation , Pompano Beach, FL. |
