Obituary: Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Martha Anne Stafford, 89, passed peacefully on , May 29, 2015, at her home in Fort Walton Beach, after a well fought battle with heart disease and cancer. Martha was born 29, 1925, to the late Vasilios and Anastasia Athanasopoulos, the sixth of seven children. Martha graduated from Lowell High School in 1944 and soon after began her civil service career at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, where she proudly served as the commanders secretary. It was there that she later met her husband and love of her life, CWO3 Joseph Wilson Stafford. married in 1955 and began their life together in Germany. Joe retired from the United States Army, they moved to Florida and chose to raise their family in Fort Walton Beach. As her family grew, she reentered the work force in 1975 with positions at the Vietnamese Refugee Processing , Eglin Air Force Base Finance Department, and then finally at the 3246th Test Wing. Martha retired from civil service in 1989 and then enjoyed volunteering at local elementary schools, going on lunch and shopping dates with her children, reading, traveling, watching Alabama football, and just being with her family. Martha was preceded in death by her husband in 1995 after forty years of marriage, and by all of her siblings, Arthur Athanas, Stella Kouloheras, Rena Coravos, Charles Athanas, Helen Sycovaris, and Alex Athanas. She is survived by her children Melissa (Steve) Zlata, Pam (Kirt) Lowe, Sandra Garcia, Suzanne (Larry) Boyd, and Joseph (Sharron) Stafford II; grandchildren Nicole Zlata, Heather (Lee) Smith, Christopher Glossop, Shawn Buford, Stephanie and Alexa Lowe, Mackenzie and Andrew Boyd, Skyla and Jansen Stafford, Cole Porter, and future great-grandson, Sawyer Smith. Martha is also survived by her brother-in-law, James Sycovaris, many nieces and nephews, and Chloe, her faithful four-legged companion for the past sixteen years. Martha was christened and raised as a Greek Orthodox, and in her later years, she enjoyed attending the contemporary service at Trinity United Methodist Church. Her family and her role as the matriarch was her most important mission in life. She did not let illness dampen her spirit for life and family or weaken her resolve to continue living life to the fullest. She was the heart of her family and will be deeply missed. The family wishes to thank the physicians, nurses, and caregivers that helped to provide a better quality of life for Martha over the last few years, especially Dr. Joseph Pedone, Dr. Henry Hsiang, Dr. Harvey Hsiang, Dr. Ming Chang, Jaime Braden, and Laurie Raffield. It is because of your dedication and support that Martha was able to remain happily in her home. A service will be held on , 3, 2015 at 2pm at Trinity United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Beal Memorial . Expressions of love may be submitted online at www.EmeraldCoast .com.
