Sonny Smith, daughters Terri Rabun, Karren Newman, Lori Ann Brude, and Frances Lee Blackschleger; her sisters Jan Renaud and Ruby Ann Britt. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Stella has never met a stranger nor has she ever refused to lend a helping hand, or ear, for some intelligent advice. Stella and Sonny just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and enjoyed their 20 years in the military. Stella will be greatly missed by all those that knew and loved her. |

Obituary: ERNESTINE MABLE LATSON ROBINSON SMITH Ernestine Smith (Tina) 90, of Jacksonville, Florida made her peaceful transition at Tallahassee Memorial care on , 12, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 15, 1924 to Mable Ervin Latson and Ernest William Latson, Jr. in Graves Hall at Morehouse in Atlanta, Georgia where her father was a Professor of Religion and Philosophy. During her life, Ernestine did not preach a sermon, but instead, lived it through a life of service, sacrifice, and unconditional love. relocating to Jacksonville, Florida, Ernestine completed her primary and secondary education at Boylan-Haven School for girls, graduating in 1941. She then enrolled in Spelman , Atlanta, Georgia and graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in 19044. Ernestine earned an additional Masters Degree from Atlanta University (AU), Atlanta, Georgia, in Social Work in 1968. Upon graduation from college, Ernestine married her childhood sweetheart, Leonard U. Robinson and to this union was born two daughters, Angela and Lenora. In 1955, she remarried. Samuel L. Smith and Ernestine were blessed with three additional daughters: Mae, Tina, and Elzena (Zena). Ernestine channeled her passion for serving and helping others through her employment with the Department of and Rehabilitative Services. Due to her commitment, she advanced from Social Worker, to Supervisor, to the Founder of the Aids Program. She retired from this position after thirty-six years with DHRS in 1984. Ernestine was a third generation, life member of Bethel Baptist Institutional Church (BGBIC). During her more than seventy years of service, her responsibilities and activities included Superintendent of the Nursery and Kindergarten, charter member of the History and Archives Ministry, Recruiter of church volunteers for Habijax, and affiliate of the national Habitat for Humanity, and member of the committee that worked to have BBIC placed on the local Springfield Historical Preservation and Restoration registry. Following her retirement, she loved to give tours of the historic BGBIC and its archives. As a seasoned member, she proudly assumed responsibilities as a Deaconess. Historic preservation was important to Ernestine and resulted in her involvement in initiatives with Boylan Haven Academy, Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, and American Beach. One of her toughest and most prized accomplishments was having the family beach home placed on the National Historic Registry in the 1900s. Her desire was to protect and preserve historic treasures for the education, enjoyment, and benefit of future generations. Love of family, friends and American Beach energized Ernestine! She was happiest surrounded by the scattered twenty-plus members of her immediate family and friends. Eagerly, she looked forward to the annual 4th of gathering at Ervins Rest, affectionately known as he beach house and the Christmas gathering which rotated among family members. Tina never met a stranger and had a gift for touching each person in a special way. Before Ernestine drew her last breath, she shared her glimpse of he beautiful white dress that God had for her. In addition, she shared her vision of Heaven as a beautiful place. She was ready to go and God was ready to receive her. We miss her dearly but celebrate her deliverance from suffering. Shell always be with us because the seeds of love she planted in our hearts have sprouted strong, deep roots and will strengthen us as we go forward. Father, we thank you for blessing this family, community, and the world with this Woman of God. Ernestine was preceded in death by her loving husband, Samuel L. Smith, two daughters Tina S. Lewis, and Elzena (Ron) G. Stephens, and her brother, Louis E. Latson of San Antonio, Texas. Survivors include her daughters, Angela R. McClung, Atlanta, GA, Lenora (Leon) R. Lowry, Tallahassee, FL, and Mae S. McKenzie, Jacksonville, FL; ten grandchildren, Dr. Arthur J. McClung, III, Alfonso Lowry, III, William Lowry, Tiffani Christy, Myisha McKenzie, Jamaal McKenzie, Christine Lewis, Amber Lewis, Devin Gordon, Monique Gordon and four great-grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her memory devoted relatives, in-laws, friends, and the countless many whose lives she touched throughout her journey. |
