Obituary: Dorothy M. Smith, 99, of Land O Lakes, FL, formally of Park, GA, was called home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on 13, 2012. She was born in Atlanta, on 31, 1912 to Annie P. and James V. Morris, Sr, the first born of five children. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, ONeil Smith, infant brother, Jack, and brothers, James (Jim) Morris, Jr., and Louie Morris. She is survived by her sister, Lucy Goldsmith, Houston, TX, daughter, Victoria Lynne (Smith) Smith (Terry), Land O Lakes, FL, granddaughters, Kellie Bryant (Greg), Karla Moorhead (John), Korrie Smith, Kara Sage (Todd), six great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Elise, Trevor and Parker Bryant, Gabriel and Michael Moorhead, sister-in-law, Marjorie (Louie)Morris and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a devoted Born Again Christian. She joined Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz, FL after moving to Land OLakes in 2004 at age 92. She had also been a member of McDonough Road Baptist Church in Fayetteville, GA and Second Baptist Church and Flat Rock Baptist Church in Park, GA. She had a loving spirit, a compassion for others, and was always concerned about the spiritual life of those she met. She was committed to sharing Gods word and was an active volunteer in Christian service, working as a School teacher, Bible School teacher, and Christian Child provider. Dorothy was always dedicated to her community and was a Girl Scout Leader, involved with the PTA program, and active in the Garden Club and Demonstration Club of Clayton , GA. She was an energetic worker and had been employed as a Sales Representative and Display Arranger for several jewelry stores in Atlanta. staying home to raise her daughter, she returned to work as a Merchandiser with the Big Apple Food Stores in East Point, GA. Dorothy enjoyed a full life and was enthusiastic, active, and surrounded by those who loved her to the end. She enjoyed her School class, the Senior at Land O Lakes, traveling with her family, and attending school and athletic events for her grandchildren. She was instrumental in shaping the lives of her daughter, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren and was the heart of every family gathering. Dorothys cause of death was due to complications following hip replacement surgery. Our world has lost a wonderful and beloved person who will truly be missed, but knowing that she is now living eternally with her Heavenly Father brings her family and friends great comfort, peace, and joy. services will be held on , 29, 2012 at 11 am, visitation begins at 10am at McDonough Road Baptist Church, 352 McDonough Road, Fayetteville, GA 30214. Obituary: If anyone ever cared, really cared for someone else it would have to be Dorothy Smith. She was a warm hearted and well liked individual, and these wonderful traits came easily to her because she was such a sociable and amiable person, someone who was always making certain that those around her had whatever they needed. Dorothy was a talkative person who was tactful at all times but typically said what she meant. Dorothy was born on at home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Marie Massey Coffey and James Pride Coffey. Dorothy was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. During her childhood she learned to be reliable and respectful. Dorothy was an obedient child who wanted to win the favor of others. She found it easy to show sympathy and to perform kind acts for others. These admirable qualities would become a part of Dorothys personality throughout her life. Though Dorothy was frequently the one to initiate games and activities with her family, she was also quite often the family member who took the role of referee. Dorothy was a peace-maker with an ability to resolve all sorts of family conflicts. In fact, Dorothy worked conscientiously to keep those typical family spats at bay. Dorothy was raised with 4 Sisters and 1 Brother. She had four older sisters: Odessa, Alma, Marion, Thelma and one older brother Robert. Dorothy and her siblings had the typical rivalries while growing up, but they cared deeply for one another. As someone who reveled in the sheer joy of her experiences, Dorothy was always enthusiastic about new adventures. Although she had an exacting nature, Dorothy was always tactful. One thing Dorothy will certainly be remembered for is that, when she got up in the mornings, she was ready and raring to go. As a young girl, Dorothy had a number of interests and was an active child. Dorothy took part in track and field. For Dorothy, the school routines were never a problem although she generally preferred variety to structure. She seemed to be able to start a project and work right through to its completion. And she was able to do it quickly and efficiently. Dorothy was also adept at details. Dorothy was very observant and was generally quick at picking up new things. She graduated from Atlantas Booker T. Washington High School in 1947. She enjoyed some classes more than others, and in fact could remember every single teachers name and the grade they taught! Dorothy had very fond memories of school and believed that your school days were your best days. high school Dorothy relocated to Chicago where she earned her certificate in Practical in 1949. There was one thing that all of Dorothys friends knew and will still remember, and that is that she was a talker. She could pretty much talk to anybody about anything. This quality is one of the primary reasons that Dorothy was such a popular person throughout her life. But Dorothy was also dependable, loyal and trustworthy. Dorothy was the kind of person who simply radiated good fellowship. While she maintained personal standards and her own personal values, Dorothy was very accepting of others. With a distinct skill for working things out, Dorothy was often the person who would organize events. In fact, Dorothy was fairly comfortable playing the role of host for just about any occasion. When Dorothy made friends, she made true and lasting friendships. While growing up, some of her best friends were Dorothy Hamlin. Later in life, she became best friends with Maureen Noble, Mrs. Herbert Green, Ron Simpson and Margaret Sargeant. Lasting friendships went beyond just those who she grew up with or those who were her neighbors. In one case her loyalty and friendship spanned 27 years as she kept in touch with cards and letters to her sons college sweetheart Pat (Sefcik) Chamberlain. Dorothy was a faithful and loving person. Some would even call her sentimental and a romantic at heart. Her kindness and consideration radiated an aura of warmth to those around her. Dorothy cared for what others thought and carried that into her marriage. On 20, 1957 Dorothy married Joe Smith, Jr. at City Hall of Chicago, Illinois. Compassionate and devoted, Dorothy worked hard to make her new life partner happy. Harmony was important to Dorothy and she made every effort to maintain it with her family. Dorothy was blessed with 2 Children, Gregory and Belinda Marie. Dorothy was always conscious of the feelings others had. She was reasonable and understanding. As a result, Dorothy was quick to solve disputes and did so without much fuss. Her secret of success in this area was simple: Dorothy would listen before she would act. Taking her work seriously came naturally to Dorothy, and she expected the same from those around her. Dorothy was a good team player, someone who was born to cooperate with others. She was what some would call a people person and it was demonstrated in her good communication skills. Dorothy was a steady worker, one who was realistic about schedules. The kind of details that would give family members and work colleagues fits were situations that Dorothy handled well. She could understand the details without getting lost in the broad ig picture. Her primary occupation was a supervisor for the U. S. Postal Service where she was employed for 7 years. She retired prematurely in 1976 due to debilitating arthritis. She brought harmony to her work environment, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done, while always maintaining respect for her colleagues.
