Obituary: Jacqueline Bess Smiley, of Embden and Skowhegan, died , 30, in Winter Park, Fla., at the age of 88. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Annie Gilbert Bess of Skowhegan. Jackie graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1943. working as a telephone operator, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corp and trained at Sisters Hospital in Waterville. Upon graduating, she worked as a nurse and served in the Army Nurse Corp until early 1950. In 1953 she married David S. Smiley, of Skowhegan, and continued working as a nurse while raising their family as they moved around the country for his career. She retired in 1987 and spent summers at their camp on Embden Lake until this year. She was predeceased by her parents and 10 siblings, Charles, George, Linwood, Theresa, Arlene, Ruth, Ethel, Virginia, Edith Bess Fisher and Joyce Bess Arsenault. She is survived by her husband, David; children Margaret Reel, of Falls Church, Va., David Jr., of Orlando, Fla., Steven, of Odum, Ga., Carol, of Durham, N.C., and Lynn (Todd) Sadowski, of Orlando, and the apple of her eye, grandson Jacob Sadowski. Obituary: Edith Elizabeth Longyear Smiley of Naples, FL, entered into rest on 13, 2015 at the age of 95. Edie was born 23, 1920 in Cambridge, Mass. A graduate of Ottawa Hills High School in Grand Rapids, MI in 1938 and the University of Michigan in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority serving as chapter President her senior year. She was also a member of the Marco Island Chapter (FL), Daughters of the American Revolution. A child of the Great Depression, after graduation Edie went to work for Muir Drug in Grand Rapids. She was elevated to the position of regional buyer for the 33-store chain when most of the men left for WWII. She often commented on how the war changed her career path. her marriage to Gordon Lawrence Smiley, M.D. in 1948, she devoted her life to her husband and raising their three children. An avid golfer for 80-years, Edie was Cascade Hills Country Club womens champion in 1937 and 1941 (Grand Rapids). Edie and Gordon moved to Louisville, KY in 1954 where she was a member of the Louisville Womans Club, DAR, Pastime Boat Club, Audubon Country Club, and Hunting Creek Country Club. bought a second home in Marco Island, FL in 1979 and ultimately retired to Florida. She was an avid gardener and boater both in Louisville and Florida enjoying numerous sailing adventures with the Sailing Association of Marco Island, and was charter member of Royal Palm Country Club, Naples, FL. Edie was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Winans Longyear, (a combat wounded Army veteran of WWI) and Mida Fischofer Longyear, her husband of 58-years, Gordon Lawrence Smiley, M.D., (a WWII veteran), and son Michael Longyear Smiley. Edie is survived by her daughter, Caroline Smiley Maney (Judge T. Patterson Patt Maney); son, David Alan Smiley (Jane Walker Smiley); daughter-in-law, Josephine Jodi Krouse Smiley; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Lindsay Maney Funches (Michael Ross Funches), Sarah Bewlay Maney Mascarich, a Tri Delt, (John Allen Mascarich), Katherine Elizabeth Smiley, M.D, Claire Nicole Smiley, Josephine Michael Smiley, and Jaekob Pierce Smiley; and six great-grandchildren, Mary Boyde Funches, Samuel Ross Funches, Michael Steele Funches, Hayley Anne Funches, Edith Elizabeth Mascarich, and Molly Todd Mascarich. A gathering and celebration of Edies life will be held on , 18th, 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Lely Palms Retirement Community, 1000 Lely Palms Drive, Naples, FL 34113 followed by a reception. Edie was a leader in all her endeavors and much loved by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. It is with great sadness we say goodbye. |
