Obituary: ROLAND FRED BUDDY SLATE 92, passed away peacefully on 7, 2016. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was educated in Chicopee School System/Trade School. Buddy moved with his family to Belchertown in 1968. Upon his retirement, He relocated to Port Saint Lucie Florida, when he lived until his death. Buddy spent his summers at his cottage on Queen Lake in Phillipston, Ma. And at his daughter and grandsons home in Belchertown, MA. Buddy retired in 1988 from Penn Truck Lines in West Springfield, Mass. He also drove Tractor Trailer Truck for many years employed by Fogarty Truck Lines for the local A+P Grocery Chain and drove Heavy Equipment for Ondrick Construction. Buddy was a very Proud American, serving in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. a, a Heavy Cruiser Flag Ship during World War II. He served as a Seaman Second-Class and Fireman First Class. Buddy was a Life Member of the DAV-United States Navy (Local 113 PSL) A member of the Loyal Order of Moose in both Chicopee Ma and PSL, FL. For 51 years, a member of Teamsters International and the organization that brought him many years of Fun, Travel and Adventure, the Florida Sungators RV club. Buddy was predeceased by his wives: Lillian Mae (LaPine) Slate in 1971 and Genevieve (Peret) Slate in 2004, Parents - Mary (Bishop) and Fred Slate, Sister Pearl (Betty) Wojtowicz and Brother Richard Slate. Survivors include his Extremely Proud, Beloved Family: Daughter Debra Slate, her companion Howard Phoenix and Grandson James (J.C.) Snodgrass of Belchertown, Mass. And Daughter Cynthia and Son-in-law Tyrone Ulmer Sr. of Port Saint Lucie, Florida whom he lived with; many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Memorial Contributions in Buddys honor may be made to your local DAV Organization, Local Moose Lodge Organization, Local Animal Rescue or your choice. A celebration of Life service will be held in Massachusetts at a later date at the discretion of the Family (Beers & Story , Belchertown, MA - www.beersandstory.com) Buddy so loved life, adventure, travel and learning. You are Never Too Old to Learn Something New was his Mantra. Witty, charming, an avid jokester, wise and humble man, Buddy found great joy in all he did. Never complaining, he made the best of every situation life handed him (up until the day he died). Sometimes in Life you are privileged enough to meet someone that touches the hearts of everyone they meet. Buddy will always be remembered as that guy. WE LOVE YOU! |
