Obituary: Barbara Brill Simmons passed quietly away at her home on 3, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her husband, four children and sister were by her side. She was born in Santa Fe. NM on 2, 1932 and grew up in Denver, CO. She earned a BFA in oil painting from Tulane in 1955 and shortly after married William W. Simmons. Will was a Navy flight surgeon and consequently, Barbara became an expert at packing their household and four children for the frequent moves. She still found time to paint on canvas, but more often was painting walls. Barbara was a woman of many talents. While still in high school she won many awards for designing and sewing her own dresses. She made her own wedding dress and her kids always had the best Halloween costumes in town. In 1970 she took a course in pottery and found a new passion. The years she spent at the Glen Echo Park pottery studios, where she was in charge of loading and unloading the kiln, were some of her happiest. In the past few years, she found much joy painting with her water color group here in Sarasota. In addition to her artistic talents, she enjoyed singing and playing her beloved Martin Guitar. And she could whistle – on three-note melody in particular to let us kids, the cats and her husband know when it was time to come home! Will retired, they moved to Sarasota. To escape the summer heat, they traveled extensively, both abroad and in their RV. Barbara was active in the folk community (especially Friends and Florida Folk) and St. Boniface Episcopal Church. Her quirky sense of humor will be missed by all. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, four children, Marcus Lee Simmons and his wife Becky, Mylinda S. Woodward and her husband Kirby, Mindy Lou Simmons, Marsden W. Simmons and his partner, Annie Murphy and her sister Bridgie Brelsford. She is “Granny Rainbow” to her seven grandchildren and also leaves several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 A.M. , 8, 2014 at St. Boniface Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to either Glen Echo Pottery, Maryland www.glenechopottery.com or the Healing Mission at St. Boniface Episcopal Church. |

Obituary: Audrey Hunt Simmons of Minneola, Florida passed away in her home surrounded by loved ones on 24, 2015 after a prolonged illness. Audrey is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Richmond Simmons of Minneola, FL; daughters Audrey Anne Simmons (husband Edward Zak) of Clermont, FL and Lauren Simmons of Hailey, ID; sons Clark Simmons of Quincy, FL and Scott Simmons of Minneola, FL; grandchildren James (Jodi) Modica IV, Clark (Keli) Modica, Daniel Simmons and Markus Simmons; great-grandchildren Ava Modica, James Modica V and Mila Modica. Audrey is preceded in death by her parents, E. Bruce and Ivy (Manby) Hunt, her brother, Bruce Hunt, and her son, Richmond Simmons. Audrey was born in Minneola on 17, 1926. She graduated from Clermont High School in 1945 and received a BS degree in Botany from Florida State University in 1949, just two years after FSU became co-educational. She played on the womens basketball team for both Clermont High and Florida State University. She and Richmond were married at St. Matthias Episcopal Church, Clermont, FL on 21, 1952. Thereafter they moved to Ann Arbor, MI while Richmond finished his MD degree at the University of Michigan and Audrey began raising the family. The family briefly moved to Detroit, MI and then lived in Jacksonville, IL until retirement brought them back to Minneola, FL in 1985. Audrey was a descendant of pioneers who settled in Minneola in the late 1800s. She was a beloved nurturer of children and animals, a peerless cook and baker, an avid and prolific gardener, an enthusiastic tennis player and a tireless volunteer. For many years she and her neighbor walked daily on Lakeshore Drive in Minneola, picking up roadside trash and dubbing themselves the Minneola Bag Ladies. St. Matthias Episcopal Church had special significance in Audreys life. As a child she was the first confirmand in the parish. Throughout the next many years, Audrey celebrated many of her most joyous milestones at St. Matthias including her wedding to Richmond, the baptism of several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and the renewal of her marriage vows on her 50th anniversary. She was a constant presence at the parish serving faithfully for many years on the Altar Guild. The memorial service in celebration of Audreys life will be held at St. Matthias Episcopal Church, Clermont, FL on 10, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in memory of Audrey to St. Matthias Church or Cornerstone Hospice. |
