Obituary: Charles Louis Schmalmaack, Jr. was born 21, 1936 to Charles Louis Schmalmaack, Sr. and Birdie Mae Jones Schmalmaack in their home in Atlanta, Georgia. He was raised in a loving, Christian way, and baptized at Beecher Hills Baptist Church in Cascade Heights. Charles enlisted in the Air Force in 1956. He was stationed at Mountain Air Force Base near Boise, Idaho as a navigator on the B-52’s. Charles met Jacquelyn Ann Potter in Boise in 1959. (“Jackie” Born at home 19, 1940 in Mannscreek, Idaho) fell in love, and he brought her home to Atlanta. were married in the same home Charles was born in, in Cascade Heights, on 17, 1960. Following active duty, Charles continued in the Air Force Reserves and attended Georgia Tech earning a degree in Electrical Technology in 1963. He began his career as an electrical engineer with Bell Labs that same year. Charles left Bell Labs for Perkin-Elmer in 1965 and opened an office for them in Orlando, Florida in 1966. Children enriched their lives, arriving: Cheryl (8/4/61), Carl (2/5/66), Charlie (3/22/71), Eric (01/19/73) In 1967, Charles decided to leave his career as an Electrical Engineer because it took him away from his family. He then chose to run his own business, opening a dry cleaners in Sanford in 1967. Charles owned and ran up to seven dry cleaning plants from 1967 to 2001 throughout Central Florida. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and children. Charles took his family on cross country car trips, camping, scalloping, crabbing, fishing, boating, water skiing, horseback riding, even sheep-herding … too many activities to list. Charles and his family built a summer home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where they spent many summer vacations from 1979 to 1989. He loved people and loved to make them laugh. He loved parties, singing and dancing. He loved his friends and neighbors. He loved to play tennis, basketball, racquetball, and was quite the pool shark. Charles was very involved in all areas of each of his children’s lives, volunteering for sporting events, and showing up for every competition his children were involved in. He loved worshipping with his family and church family. God and family were the most important aspects of his life. Charles was called home to be with his Lord and Savior , 1, 2015. In the last hours, Charles was embraced by his wife and family in his home in Maitland, Florida. Charles, also known as “Chuck” is survived by his wife Jacquelyn Ann “Jackie” Potter Schmalmaack Children: Cheryl Ann Schmalmaack Ciccone, Carl Robert Schmalmaack, and wife Helen Green Schmalmaack, Charles (Charlie) Louis Schmalmaack III, Eric Kirk Schmalmaack, and wife Sondra Powers Schmalmaack. Predeceased by his sister, Joan Caroline Schmalmaack Weldy. Nieces: Joyce Weldy Hose and husband John Hose and Karen Weldy Colley and husband David Colley. Grandchildren: Gabrielle (Gabbie) Mae Ciccone, Rachel St. Catherine Green, Rhett Andrew Schmalmaack and Savannah Ambrielle Schmalmaack. Obituary: Frederick Henry Schmale 10, 1917 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania- 9, 2015 Boca Raton Florida Born as the second child of Theodore and Clara (nee Dinkmeyer) Schmale, Fred was born in Pittsburgh and lived there until age 11 with his parents, brother Herbert and sister Helen. A younger brother Ralph died in childhood. In 1928, the family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan when Theodore was called to be pastor of Bethlehem Evangelical Church (currently Bethlehem United Church of Christ). Fred graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1934. He started at Elmhurst , a favorite college among clergy families, but transferred after the first year to University of Michigan. He graduated from the University in 1939 with a degree in Economics and remained a lifelong Wolverines fan. graduation he moved to Detroit and began working at General Motors. The war was brewing and because of his love of the sea, he enlisted in the Navy. He went to Midshipman's school in Chicago and taught navigation for two years in Norfolk, but he requested active duty. He was stationed on a subchaser based in Cuba for a year, then was navigator and lieutenant commandeer of the USS Renate, a hospital ship based out of Pearl Harbor. He returned to Detroit when his active duty ended but he stayed in the Navy Reserves for ten years and was honorably discharged in 1955. In Detroit, Fred returned briefly to his previous job at General Motors but left to join Kaiser Motors. At Kaiser, he met his future wife, Theresa. were married in 1948 and spent the next 67 years together. He began work at Ford Motor in 1949 and worked there until his retirement in 1980. He was controller of various Ford Motor plants, mostly in Michigan, with the exception of 5 years in Kansas City (1955-1960). The time in Kansas City was difficult for a sea-lover. During this time he built an 18 foot wood sailboat in the garage and sailed it in man-made Lake Jacomo, about an hour from home. He returned to Michigan in 1960 as controller of the Lincoln Mercury Plant at Wixom, Michigan. He joined the Detroit Yacht Club and was active sailing on his own, now larger, boats and with friends. The family sailboats were named after Navigation stars, Vega and Capella. He raced several times in the Port Huron to Mackinaw race. He was an active member of the Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church and served as an usher for many years. He and his wife purchased a condominium in Boca Raton Florida in the early 1970's in anticipation of retirement. maintained a home in Michigan until 1988, when they moved full time to Florida. He was voluntary treasurer of the Chalfonte Condominium association from 1987-2007. He obtained his pilot's license after WW2 and was a recreational pilot for many years. He began windsurfing in Michigan in his 60's and continued windsurfing in the ocean in Boca Raton well into his 70's. He and Theresa travelled the world, mostly on cruise ships. He will be remembered for his forever strong faith in God, his optimism, his kindness and unselfish service to others, his love of the sea, his sense of adventure, and his good humor. He is survived by his wife, Theresa; children, Kathryn Ann Cox and her husband Joseph Douglas Cox, Timothy John Schmale, and Richard Frederick Schmale and his wife Maria Teresa Schmale; 8 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. |
