Obituary: My father passed away on morning, 23rd, following a short-lived battle with lung cancer. Dad was diagnosed with non small-cell carcinoma in late . By the time it was discovered, it was too late for any treatment to have any meaningful effect. Dad loved his wife, Sally, and wanted to spend as much time with her as possible in his final days. Sally was by his side for all of it, including the morning he passed. enjoyed time raising horses and dancing, and were often the highlight of the show at the Mount Vernon Country Club on Big Band nights. became regulars in the North Denver neighborhood restaurants and were always greeted with familiar smiles everywhere they went. We were fortunate to be able to get Dad home from St Anthonys Intensive Unit just 36 hours before he passed away. My thanks to everyone who helped in allowing that to happen including the hospice staff at Collier (Lutheran Hospital), especially Anne Greenbaum, as well as friends and family, especially Shane Giuliano and Julie Riffle. Dad wanted to die at home, and it could not have happened without you. My thanks to the many friends and family that visited and called in his final days as well. Your prayers and thoughts were received, I promise. Born and raised in North Denver, Dad never strayed far from his roots. He spent his entire lifetime less than 5 miles from where he was born, graduating from North High School (Class of 1951), joining the army shortly thereafter and serving in Korea, then coming home to attend the University of Colorado on a GI Bill to get a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was married in 1955, and accepted a position with The Martin , an aerospace / defense contractor. Martin would become Martin Marietta, and later Lockheed Martin and also Dads home away from home. Dad was there for all of it and hired many of the folks who later found great success at Martin, including many in upper management. He took pride in letting people know that he was hired by Glenn L Martin himself back in 1960 and Dad never missed a retirement party for one of his own hires and those of many peers. It is not often that an individual works his entire life for one company, but my father did just that, retiring in 1988 at age 55. Dads office at home is plastered with awards and achievements of his aerospace career including accolades for Apollo, Skylab, The Viking Mission to Mars, shuttle missions 46 and 47, and his final project, Tethered Satellite. He even has part of a patch that landed on the moon! I know he played an integral role in many top secret projects as well, but they don hand out awards for those ;) Dad loved cars and his pride and joy was his 1942 Chevrolet. I personally watched him take it apart and put it back together twice over a ten year period in the 1970s. We took his baby to a Fathers Day event once and he fit right in with the car club guys immediately. could tell right away, Dad knew his stuff. Dad loved stock car racing and was a regular at Lakeside Speedway and Colorado National Speedway, even serving as part of the pit crew for Rick lli who later found great success in the NASCAR Truck series in Arizona. He missed those days after Lakeside closed. Dads best friend through life was Pat Van Dyke who preceded him with cancer in 2009. Pats death had a devastating blow to my father, who then lost his daughter, Renye, only 5 months later, again to cancer. Dad became a surrogate father to the Van Dyke family, and Pats eldest daughter, Donna Rillings, became a surrogate daughter. Donna and my father grew very close after these events five years ago, and she and her husband, Ken, gave my Dad the best sendoff ever bringing his favorite meal of Caesar salad and ravioli for the Broncos preseason game versus the Texans. Dad commented during the game that Osweiller is still throwing behind his receivers. Donna and Ken were able to be bedside when Dad passed. We have received such an outpouring of love and well wishes and are truly thankful for the offers of support and love. I ask only that leave a memory of my Dad on this web site as those will later be printed into books for the family. |
