Obituary: One of the members of America's Greatest Generation, Edward Delmar Rucks, age 96, went home to be with the Lord on , 8, 2017 while dressing to go to church as he did every . Mr. Rucks is now reunited with his wife of 60 years, Lois Maxine, who predeceased him in 2002. Mr. Rucks was born in Mulberry, Arkansas, on May 27, 1919 the son of r and Gladys Rucks. Mr. Rucks is a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War Two and the Korean War. From a lowly Army Private he rose to become a First Sergeant and later completed Officer Candidate School, Fort Hood Texas in 1943 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. He served with distinction in the liberation of both New Guinea and the Philippines. His campaign medals include: American Defense, American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific, National Defense, World War Two Occupation -Japan, Philippine Liberation and the World War Two Victory Medal. Following the War he worked for Richfield Oil until recalled for service in the Korean War and after his return from active duty he worked for ARCO first as production foreman then as Production Plant Superintendent in Cuyama Valley and Bakersfield until his retirement in 1986. As a child of the Great Depression, poverty ridden and hungry, he came alone to California from Arkansas in 1935 owning only the shirt and trousers on his body and a few coins in his pocket. He began his California work life as a farm laborer at Degiorgio Farms and later met Lois Maxine Sturgis, age 17, who would become the love of his life and best friend. were married in Lamont, CA in 1942. Mr. Rucks was a man of character, profound moral insight, keen intellect, an inexhaustible work ethic, all encompassed by an enjoyable sense of humor. He loved and served his God, his family and his nation with tireless dedication and with unquenchable passion. Mr. Rucks is survived by his wife of 13 years, Elta, two sons: Edward M. Rucks (Alanna) and James L. Rucks (Lori) both of Bakersfield. He leaves behind five grandsons, Michael E. Rucks of Jessup, PA, John D. Rucks of Bakersfield, James M. Rucks of San Diego, Joel E. Rucks and Jayson P. Rucks and step grandsons, Matthew T. Akers and Adam R. Akers, all of Bakersfield. He also leaves seven great grandchildren: Andrew Rucks, Brendan Rucks, Emmelia Rucks and Rebecca Rucks of Jessup, PA and Kohen Rucks, Kaitlyn Rucks and Klaire Rucks of Bakersfield. Services will be held on , 14, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Hillcrest Memorial Park-Chapel (9101 Kern Canyon Rd) and he will be interred in a family plot next to his beloved wife Lois, immediately following service.
