Obituary: Dorothy Marie Rodstrom was born at home on 20, 1915 in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota to Ernest Bernhagen and Caroline (Radomski) Bernhagen, and passed from this life on 1, 2011 in La Mesa at the age of 95. She earned her R.N. at St. Cloud School of and traveled to the South where she worked on Indian reservations and began a lifetime of helping people in poverty, ill health and addiction. When World War II broke out, Dorothy enlisted in the Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. There she met submariner Frank Rodstrom and they were married 3, 1944. the war, they settled in San Diego and raised their five children. Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her children fondly recall her caring during times of sickness, the clear values she instilled about right and wrong, and the great meals she prepared - especially freshly baked bread and German pancakes. She was a fine example of the Greatest Generation. She began attending AA meetings in the late 1960s, sponsoring numerous friends struggling with alcoholism, and continued going to meetings for over 40 years. In 1970 she became very involved in starting up The Turning Point , a 12-Step-based social model recovery home for women. her daughter Christine married NBA player Pat Riley in 1970, Dorothy and Frank became very involved in professional basketball, attending numerous playoff and All Star games over the next 25 years. In her later years she enjoyed gambling at local casinos, and she joked that this pastime was her way to continue helping out Native Americans. She was also proud to be the oldest member of her beloved Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years - Frank Rodstrom, sister Lucille Naegeli, and brothers Marvin and Ernest Bernhagen. She is survived by her children Tom Rodstrom of Silver City New Mexico; Christine and Pat Riley of Coral Gables Florida; Bill Rodstrom and Laurie Totaro of McKinleyville, California; John and Cindy Rodstrom of La Mesa, California, Richard Rodstrom of San Diego, California; grandchildren Erik and Jennifer Rodstrom, Karin and Josh Leuenberger; Klara Rodstrom, James Riley, Elisabeth Riley, Remington and Avianna Rodstrom; and great-grandchildren Trevor, Ryan, Ashlin, and Sydney. Viewing will be 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and a Memorial Service will be held on , 5th at 9:30a.m. at Greenwood Memorial Park and Mortuary, at 4300 Imperial Avenue in San Diego, California 92113. |
