Obituary: Elaine Rosalie was born on 1, 1927 on a farm near Maurice, Iowa to Jake and Allie (Van der Stoop) Kuiken. She had two older brothers, one younger brother, and three older sisters. On 14, 1933 her dad passed away, leaving the family and almost six-year-old Elaine on the farm during the Depression. struggled for several years and then in of 1937 her mom re-married "Dad Van Bruggen" who had 10 children of his own. Moving to the Van Bruggen farm near Hawarden, Iowa meant attending the country school. Yes, Elaine really did walk a half mile to school every day, often in the snow. She attended high school in Ireton, Iowa and graduated in 1944. Meanwhile, the war had broken out and Elaine experienced the sugar rationing, gasoline rationing and other shortages common during that time. Following graduation from high school, Elaine worked as an assistant teacher at the Maurice school. The following summer she attended Westmar in Le Mars, Iowa for a three month teacher training course made available due to a teacher shortage caused by the war. While teaching at a one-room country schoolhouse, Elaine met Merlin Gerald Riphagen, known to friends and family as Rip. According to Elaine, he was "this great guy who had been discharged from the Army because of a back injury he had gotten breaking mules. One problem was, he was engaged. But time took care of this problem, and in of 1946 we were married." She became Elaine Riphagen. In 1949 their daughter Bonnie was born, and when Bonnie was only three months old, they moved to California. With the help of family and some good people from Bethel Church, Rip and Elaine got started in the hay (grain-feed) business. In 1953 Elaine had her first son, Gary, and their youngest child, Gregg, was born in 1957. In 1958 Rip and Elaine built their home on 178th Street, a home she would live in until 2000. Life was good and though they sometimes struggled financially, the trucking business, which hauled everything from fertilizer to fruit, was pretty good. When Gregg started school, Elaine went to work part-time in John and Gordon's clothing store. Later, when Kay opened a children's clothing store, she went to work at Kay's Tiny Togs, where she continued working until the store closed almost 20 years later. It was her employment at Kay's Tiny Togs that began the decades long tradition for the grandkids of shopping days with Grandma , usually for back to school clothes or bathing suits. Over the years, Elaine enjoyed many hobbies and activities. When her kids were young, the family was involved in Little League, with Rip as a coach and Elaine as a board member. For many years Elaine enjoyed bowling in church and women's leagues. her kids were grown she took up golf, and over the years Elaine did a variety of hand-work including macramé, painting, crochet and needlepoint. She also enjoyed camping, both shorter trips with friends and extended family to places like Oak Glen and Doheny State Beach, as well as the longer trips with the trailer or motor home all over the country. And always, there was sitting around the campfire and the 10 o'clock camping bedtime; you can't go to bed before 10 o'clock when you were camping. Elaine loved Bethel Church and it played a large role in her life. She taught School for almost 20 years and was a Pioneer Girls Guide, directed the Vacation Bible School program, and sang in the choir for many years. She was also part of the team that organized the Couples for Christ ministry in which she and Rip were active for many years. In 1985 Rip had a heart attack and many things in her life changed. While blessed to still have him with her, over the next 12 years, Rip continued to weaken until he left to be with The Lord on 28, 1996. Throughout those years and after, Elaine continued to enjoy time with friends and family and continued to be active. Rip passed she began traveling again, taking trips to Branson, Missouri with an adult travel group and going to Hawaii with the family in 1999. Elaine also continued to find ways to be active in the church and her community. She was frequently out-and-about having breakfast with friends or playing cards. She became involved in a group for single adults called BYKOTA (Be Ye Kind One to Another) and volunteered at the Artesia Christian . And whenever possible, she would eagerly attend the baseball/basketball/soccer/volleyball games of any of her grandkids or great-grandkids as well as any other musical concert, dance recital, birthday party, Dedication, Graduation or get-together. Elaine leaves behind a sister, Muriel, and a step brother, Ted. Her legacy includes her three children, eight grandchildren, three of whom are married and another engaged, and six great-grandchildren, as well as friends and extended family each with their own stories and memories to share. |
