Obituary: Donald Edward Rau, aged 86, passed away at home on , 10, 2015 surrounded by love. Don was born on 3, 1929 to Marguerite and John Rau. Just as his mother had been before him, he was born on his grandparents farm near Devils Lake in Baraboo, Sauk , Wisconsin. He was baptized and then later confirmed at St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baraboo. He attended St. John's School from first through eighth grades. He graduated from Baraboo High School in 1946. Don was employed during the summers of 1943 through 1946 at the South Shore Lodge at Devil's Lake. With his father's written permission (as he was underage), he enlisted in the Army of the United States in 1946. He served in I of the 27th Infantry Regiment (nicknamed the "Wolfhounds") of the 25th Infantry Division ("Tropic Lightning"), which included a tour of duty in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1948. Don worked as an administrative assistant to the commanding officer and the administrative officer at Badger Ordnance Works in Baraboo before joining the Foreign Service where he represented the U.S. as the Clerk of the Consulate in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He temporarily resigned from the Foreign Service in order to enroll at the University of Florida where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations in 1958. In 1957, he proposed to his girlfriend, Martha Gibbons, also of Baraboo, whom he'd met the old fashioned way (in a bar), and the two were married on 8, 1957, at St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baraboo. graduation Don rejoined the Foreign Service and as a 32-year Foreign Service Officer, Don represented the U.S. overseas in Colombo, Sri Lanka; Chennai, India; Berne, Switzerland; Kathmandu, Nepal; Hong Kong; and Canberra, Australia. Don retired with Martha to Salinas, California where Don enjoyed traveling, drinking cheap coffee, and writing essays and true tales. Survivors include his wife, Martha of Salinas, California; children, Gail (William) Racherbaumer and Jeffrey (Laura) Rau; siblings, Dorothy Pfhistner and Katherine Totsie Jackson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lynn Rau; and siblings, Robert Bud Rau, John Jack Rau, Marilyn Cady, and Harold Butch (Judy) Rau. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Hospice of the Central Coast, his wonderful caregivers, and especially Adriana who brought much joy into his life. In lieu of flowers, Don would have preferred donations to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) or the Hospice of the Central Coast at CHOMP. Services will be held at St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baraboo, Wisconsin. |

Obituary: Chris Rau of Anaheim Hills passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on 27, 2015 as the result of Parkinson's Disease. She is survived by her loving husband John of 55 years; daughters Laurie and Kristi; son-in-law Greg; grandchildren Zachary, Victoria and Matthew; brother Martin Almquist of Santa Ana and his wife Sue Almquist; sister Cynthia Cottier of Pasadena and her husband John Cottier; nephew Dan Almquist and his wife Lindsey, their son Colton and two daughters Everly and Emerson; niece Audie and her husband Adam Hebert, as well as numerous cousins and many friends. She is also survived by the world's two best caregivers Angie and Jo Anne who made the last years of her life more comfortable before her passing. Chris was born in Riverside, California in 1940. She resided in Riverside for her years in school including Riverside Poly High and Riverside City where she studied music and home economics. Upon marrying John in 1960, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and then on to Seattle, Washington as John pursued graduate studies. She and John moved to Orange in 1963 where she worked at Security Pacific Bank for a number of years before settling down to raise a family. Professionally, she was an outstanding piano teacher loved by all for her kindness and creative recitals. She later pursued a career as a manicurist and massage therapist. She was actively involved in the Crystal Cathedral Ministries as a member of the Church's handbell choir and for many years was a member of the ing Handbell Choir which was the lead-off entry in the 1988 Tournament of Roses Parade. also participated in parades in Canada, Oregon, California and Arizona. She loved to play the piano, the Crystal Cathedral organ and ring handbells. Other interests included roller skating, riding horses, waterskiing and watching tennis at the Indian Wells tennis tournament facility. She truly was the most gentle and kindest person. She was loved by everyone. Chris touched the lives of all around her and we are all so grateful to have known her. She will be deeply missed, but we are grateful that we will see her again in heaven. We love you Mom! |
