Obituary: Dorothy Bertha Hoffman was born in Napavine, Washington on 27, 1919. Her parents, Gustaf and Bertha Hoffman had moved there from Vader, Washington. The growing family later moved to St. Urban and Winlock before moving to Centralia where Dorothy grew up along with sisters Elsie and Helen, and brother Robert. She left us calmly with her sons holding her hands 6, 2017. On the night of her Centralia High School graduation in 1937, Julius Raabe asked for her hand in marriage and presented her an engagement ring. While Julius finished business school in Seattle, Dorothy worked at the local JC Penny store. were married in 1939 and moved to Seattle where Julius began a long career with Fageol Motors Co. Initially they lived in an apartment on Queen Anne Hill, then bought their first house in Ballard. Both Dorothy and Julius loved to dance, starting in their courting days going to local dances with friends throughout the Centralia area, and continuing for the rest of their lives. In the 1960s and 1970s they belonged to the Starlighters Dance Club which held ballroom dances with live orchestras four times a year. These were formal affairs and Dorothy made most of the gowns she wore to these events, accompanied by her handsome beau in his tux. developed many long term friendships though Starlighters. While living in Ballard, Dorothy and Julius would visit the Lake Sammamish area for picnics and camping, it was just a pretty, quiet lake way out in the country in those days. enjoyed the area so much they scrimped and saved until they were able to buy a lot on the lake. cleared a space on the lot by hand for a cabin, built with the help of friends and family. literally bought nails a pound at a time as their dream took shape until they were able to move in full time. Even then they hosted picnics for family and friends, and Barbara and John Stewart their niece and nephew visited often from Centralia. Their first son, Richard Julius, was born while they lived here. The cabin was tiny so an addition was in order and the home became basically what it is today. Three years after Dick was born James Robert joined the family. It was the perfect setting to raise a family and the kids learned life on the lake in a close neighborhood. Dorothy took an active role in PTA, Cub Scouts, her Study Club and Bridge Club as she and her friends were raising families. She was the quintessential home maker, dinner on the family table at five PM, sewing clothes, cooking, canning and preserving gems from a large garden, carpooling neighbor kids home from school. She always enjoyed swimming in the lake too. As her kids grew up the fleet of boats that were in her life forever gradually grew. From a rowboat they visited friends at the end of the lake while she was pregnant. Then the rowboats got motors, and hydros were built in the basement by Julius and the boys, she was always proud of their accomplishments. Then came water ski boats that many friends and family learned to ski behind. There was a story about making a choice of a new outboard motor or a new refrigerator.my it was a beautiful outboard! Dorothys closest friend, Joanne Moore whom she knew since childhood, and her husband Charlie had a cabin cruiser that Dorothy and Julius went on before the kids were born. That planted a seed and in the 1960s they chartered a boat, then bought their first cruiser, a beautiful Chris Craft named the Scapha. That was the start of a long cruising life with several more boats, the favorites named Juldory. belonged to Seattle Yacht Club and visited many of the outstations. Early cruises were with kids and their friends in the San Juan and Canadian Gulf Islands. As the kids grew up and went their own ways, Dorothy and Julius continued boating further north into the Broughtons. Going from anchorage to anchorage there were usually fish poles on the stern regularly producing salmon for the BBQ. And when the anchor was set, the crab pots went in to soak. Always seeking a new adventure for the family, in 1960 Dorothy, Julius and the boys took their first trip to Hawaii. She loved the abundance of beautiful flowers, and of course playing on the beach and ocean with her family. One of her cousins had been stationed in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked starting WWII. With a little research it was believed he went down with the USS Arizona. contacting the base, she learned for those who had family on board you could visit a small visitor platform mounted on the deck of the sunken ship. Our family was taken there on the Commanders Launch with a couple other families. It was a poignant moment for all. This was the start of a lifelong love of Hawaii. Dorothy and Julius started going there every year to celebrate their wedding anniversary in and playing lots of golf. visiting all the islands, Kauai became their second home. made many friendships at a time share condo, and later purchased their own condo. Dorothy loved attending services at Kapaa United Church of Christ where hymns were sung in Hawaiian by the choir. She enjoyed reading the church bulletin she received every month, and was on the prayer list of the most recent issue. Her prayers were answered. Golf was also a passion of Dorothys. She and Julius played nearly everywhere they traveled. For several years she belonged to the Snohomish Golf Clubs Womens organization and competed in many tournaments. In Hawaii she volunteered at the Womens PGA events each year and met many of her favorite players. And there were lots of fun times (and good stories) with the Audrey and Don Werst, Anna Mary and Howard Fiscus, and continued... |
