Obituary: Clara Louise Richcreek, 90, died , Nov. 17, 2015, at her home after a valiant five-year battle with ovarian cancer. She loved cooking, crossword puzzles, and iced tea and her church, her children, her friends, and especially her dachshund Zeus who died in May 2015. Clara was born Oct. 1, 1925, in Gore, Ohio, to Thomas Cyrus Riddlebarger and Victoria Mae Primmer. She was one of 11 children. She is predeceased by brothers Donald, Carl, Wilbur, and Floyd and sisters Lela, Nellie, Lena, and Mary. Her surviving brothers are Charles Riddlebarger of Columbus, Ohio, and Ralph (Barbara) Riddlebarger of Logan, Ohio. Upon graduation from high school, Clara joined the wave of young women helping to fight World War II on the home front in the nation’s capital. Clara began working for the Department of the Navy in 1943, earning $2,880 that year. Clara met her future husband, Glenn D. Richcreek, Sr., a U.S. Army infantry officer who also grew up in Ohio, on a night out on the town with friends. were married 4, 1951, in Washington, D.C. spending three years in Germany and six years in Ohio, Glenn and Clara settled in Fairfax City, buying a home there in 1960 for $17,900. Clara and Glenn raised two children in Fairfax: Glenn D. Richcreek, Jr., born in Newark, Ohio, in 1954, and Jennifer Jo Richcreek, born in Fairfax in 1968. Glenn Richcreek, Sr. died in 1982. Clara worked for Fairfax Public Schools from 1959 to 1981 as a clerk typist for such notable officials as superintendent of public schools W.T. Woodson and associate superintendent for instruction S. Barry Morris. Clara was proud of the fact that she was the first typist in the FCPS headquarters system to use an IBM Selectric typewriter. Upon retirement, Clara gave countless hours of her time as an officer in the Fairfax corps of the Salvation Army Auxiliary, helping to organize its annual fashion show and silent auction and serving as its president. She earned its Volunteer of the Year award in 2005. She was a member of Fairfax Presbyterian Church for 55 years, counting its offerings every for many years and serving as chair of its circle of the most senior members. Only days before Clara’s death, she witnessed her daughter, Jennifer, 46, modeling a new suit for her first night of training to be a deacon at FPC. Jennifer is the first deacon at the church with Down syndrome. In addition to many nieces and nephews, her two brothers, her son and his wife, Joanne, and daughter, Clara is survived by a stepson, Jeffrey Richcreek (Audrey), who lives in Findlay, Ohio. A daughter Lisa died in infancy in 1958. Clara also leaves behind loving hospice and oncology nurses and doctors and a very special friend, Diana “Dee” Jones. A large fan club of church and volunteer friends sent nearly 70 cards to Clara for her 90th birthday. Visitation is scheduled for , Nov. 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Demaine in Fairfax, Va. services will be held , Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. at Fairfax Presbyterian Church. Burial will take place , Nov. 28, in Newark, Ohio. |
