Obituary: Julie Fangming Ho Rao was born in Chungking, China in 11, 1941, the only child of Dr. Yichun Ho and Ying-Hwa Chang. Told by doctors that Mrs. Ho was too frail to bear a child, Mr. and Mrs. Ho were delighted to actually have a daughter, nicknaming their precious girl Little Jewel. At the time, Dr. Ho was the Dean of both the Law School at the National Central University in Chunking. When Julie reached school age, the family moved to Nanking in 1945, then later to Hong Kong. Julie grew up in the midst of the Chinese Communist Revolution, and to escape communist oppression, the family immigrated to America. In America, Julie attended school at Western High School, George Washington University, Columbia Union University, and Rutgers University. earning a masters degree in human nutrition, she worked in various positions as a dietitian, eventually assuming a supervisorial role. In 1983, Julie was introduced to the Republican Party, establishing a relationship that would define the rest of her career. Over the following 30 years, she worked for numerous GOP leaders, including Frank Wolf, John Warner, Ronald Reagan, and George H. Bush. Her accomplishments include founding the Cosmo Republican Womans Club, being recognized as one of the Ten Most Outstanding Grass Root Workers in the Republican Party, founding and acting as Chairman for the Federation of Republican Asian Americans, and organizing the First and Second Asian-Pacific Presidential Inaugural Balls. She was also appointed Director of Volunteers for The Organization for Americas Future, Asian Finance Director for the Bush Reelection Campaign, and Special Assistant to the Commissioner of Food and Drug Administration. Throughout her life and work, Julie was the quintessential people person. She enjoyed her work, but treasured the people with whom she worked. She cherished the many friends she was fortunate enough to have. She was endeared to her family, including the many relatives with whom she shared her childhood. Whatever your age, walk of life, or country of origin, to know Julie was to be her friend. Most of all, Julie loved dearly and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her beloved husband David, son Michael (Trang), daughter Debbie (Carl), and four grandchildren (Nicholas, Lauren, Claire, Corinne). Her friends and family meant everything to her, and she meant everything to her friends and family. |

Obituary: Of Annandale, on 28, at the age of 85. Beloved husband of 64 years to Pauline Ransone; dear father of John M. Ransone of Williamsburg, VA, Debra A. (Mark) Newbold of Purcellville, VA, and James F. (Andrea) Ransone of Troy, MI; also survived by granddaughters Emily Anderson, Megan Oravetz, Julia Newbold, Rachel Ransone, Lindsey Ransone, and Sarah Ransone; grandsons Andrew Newbold & Tyler Newbold, great-grandson Nathan Anderson; and sister Suzanne Aktug. John graduated from Cambridge High School in 1945, and was awarded a full scholarship to John's Hopkins University. He joined the Navy in 1946, and was honorably discharged in 1951. He married Pauline Ransone in 1951, attended Michigan State University from 1951-1955, and moved to Virginia in 1955. It was then that he began work with The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington DC until his retirement in 1984. John Ransone was an electronic engineer, and the section head in the radar division. He worked as a pioneer in the development of radar both for its discovery and application. The first half of his career was devoted to enlarging and understanding the principles of radar systems, which included observing radar reflections in different types of terrain - such as deserts, craters, wheat fields, and barren land. The second half of his career was as a section head in the Tactical Electronic Warfare Division, which was responsible for research and development in support of the Navy's Tactical Electronic Warfare (EW) requirements and missions: EW support measures, electronic countermeasures, supporting counter-countermeasures, studies, analyses, and simulations for the determination and improvement of the effectiveness of these systems. Here he was also devoted to simulating missile attacks against the U.S. Naval fleet, accomplished by flying the EC-121 ("Connie") and testing Naval countermeasures to a missile attack. He worked at NRL's Ships EW Systems Branch which conceives designs and develops techniques, components, and systems such as jamming, deception and integrated defensive systems to support the roles and missions of U.S. Navy ships by denying or degrading hostile use of the electromagnetic spectrum; studies and analyzes ways to optimize their use; develops and operates systems to exercise and test effectiveness and ships' defenses. Mr. Ransone and his crew were awarded several medals of achievement for the completion of their missions. Special Recognitions for John T. Ransone, Jr.: 1972: Research Publication award from Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D.C. "Variation of the NRCS of the Sea with Increasing Roughness," Journal of Geophysical Research, Feb 1971 1976: Research Publication award from Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D.C. " NRL Assessment of Special Electromagnetic Interference (SEMI)," , 1975. - see photo of reward receipt , 1977: Department of the Navy, Naval Research Laboratory, Official Commendation for, "His exceptional technical assistance in supporting and operating the missile simulators on the EC-121 aircraft during at-sea evaluations of the SLQ-17 from 26, 1975. His intense and dedicated effort contributed significantly to the success of this operation and the resultant high quality data. In recognition of this performance, which has upheld the highest traditions of Naval service...." Numerous individual and Group achievement awards, among them Department of the Navy, Naval Research laboratory letter of Appreciation, 1975 successful completion of joint USN/RNLN Electronic Warfare EVALUATION PROJECT, F/S17 project and 1985 Letter of Appreciation for contributions to the success of the DECM/Decoy Integration Program. These cold war missions above were carried out aboard the Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star, the "Connie," and John Ransone flew on one of the last models. The EC-121 was introduced in 1954 and retired from service in 1978, but one aircraft remained with the US Naval aircrews until 1982 - which was the aircraft that Mr. Ransone flew on. The EC-121 was designed to serve as an airborne early warning system to complement the Distant Early Warning Line - the "DEW line," a system of radar stations in northern Artic region of Canada with additional stations in Alaska, Iceland and Greenland, where John Ransone also traveled to during his career in Naval Research. EC-121s were also used for intelligence gathering or Signals Intelligence, otherwise known as SIGINT. o Warning Stars of the U.S. Air Force were also active in the Vietnam War as electronic sensor monitors - and interestingly, were the forerunner to Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS. The U.S. Air Force aircrews adopted the civil nickname, "Connie" (diminutive of Constellation) as reference, a name used by most familiar with the aircraft. In 1984, he retired and devoted the remaining years of his life to his loving wife, Pauline, and his three children as well as 8 grandchildren. An avid sailor, he shared his love of the water and sailing with his family and friends, spending time together aboard his Morgan 38 sailboat, Galileo, docked at Solomon's Island Maryland. He sailed in the Chesapeake Bay, which he loved to do even from his youth in Cambridge MD, which included sailing on the Choptank River, one of his favorite rivers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Johns memory to Cure PSP, www.curepsp.org. |
