Obituary: Thomas Russell Rankin, 86, of Vestavia Hills, passed away , May 29th. Tom was born in Union City, Tennessee. He graduated from Union City High School in 1946, where he was a National Beta Club Member, Senior Class President, Editor of the school newspaper, and played football. He wrote sports columns for the Union City newspaper while in high school. He graduated from UT Junior at Martin. Tom joined the Air Force in 1948, and was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in , 1952. He graduated from Memphis State University in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He was employed as an Accountant by South Central Bell for 34 years, retiring in 1988. He had been a resident of Birmingham since 1959. Tom was a member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in wood for 56 years. He served his Lord in many ways, teaching Training Union and School, and helping with the Pre-Teen choir. He was a reading coach at Hall Kent Elementary for 20 years, where he was known to many students as Grandpa Rankin. He is survived by his son, Brian Rankin of Vestavia Hills; daughter, Sandra Rankin of Leeds, and daughter, Elise Rankin of Eugene, Oregon. He is also survived by two cousins, Gwynne Alexander of Union City, TN and Maurice Alexander of South Lyon, Michigan. Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Betty Jean Massey Rankin, and his parents, Russell Erle and Nelle Strother Rankin, both of Obion , TN. Tom was a kind and generous man, with a lively sense of humor. He influenced many lives with his positive outlook and his desire to help others. He will be greatly missed. A visitation for Tom will be , 6th from 10:00 am to 11:00 AM at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church , followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM. The family will meet at 2:00 PM at Southern Heritage for burial. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions to Toms memory be made to Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, 1114 Oxmoor Road, Birmingham, AL 35209 or to Big Oak Ranch, PO Box 507, Springville, AL 35146. |

Obituary: RANKIN, BETTY JEAN MASSEY Age 77, of Vestavia Hills, passed away morning, 8, 2011 after a year-long illness. Betty Jean was born in Manchester, Tennessee, and grew up in the Murfreesboro, Tennessee area. Following graduation from Walter Hill High School, she was employed by Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph for several years. She had been a resident of the Birmingham area since 1959. She was married to her husband, Thomas Rankin, for 54 years this month. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Brian Rankin, of Vestavia, and daughters, Sandra Rankin of Leeds, Alabama and Elise Rankin of Eugene, Oregon, and by her granddaughter, Barbara (Anthony) Capps, and great-grandsons, Kaylon and Landon Capps of Pell City. She is also survived by her brother, John (Ruby) Massey, and sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Beard, Mrs. Gracie (Gerald) Sullivan, Miss Anne Massey, all of Murfreesboro, and Mrs. Sue Smith of Antioch, TN, and 12 nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rankin was a long-time member of the Sanctuary Choir of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, and was also a member of the senior adult choir, the Dawsonaires. During her long membership at Dawson, she was involved in many activities including teaching Pre-School School, W.M.U., Soup Kitchen, and Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of her adult School class. Betty loved to garden and had planted many beautiful flowers in her yard. She loved to sing and play piano, and she loved to sew. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pierce Hilton and Lois Gregory Massey, her brother, Jack H. Massey, and two brothers-in-law, Vernon Beard and James Smith. A celebration of her life will be held at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church at 11:00 A.M. on , 15, 2011. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. preceding the service. Burial service will be at 2:00 P.M. at Southern Heritage . In lieu of flowers, her family requests that contributions to Bettys memory be made to the Music Ministry, Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, 1114 Oxmoor Rd, Birmingham, AL 35209.
