Obituary: RUFFNER Theodora Deane Ruffner glowed with charisma until her last breath whispered out. Cancer, skillfully disguised by a dancing-scholarly-yogini physique, overpowered her body - never her spirit. When she passed, her two daughters and close friend Mobi surrounded her with a cocoon of love. Hers was a life fully lived but lamentably cut untimely short. Born in Cortez, Colorado; the first words Dora uttered took the rare form of a sentence:-"Bonnie chased the horse." Her parents, Victoria and Albert, had three other children; Julia, Albert, and Patty. Dora was the eldest. She was precocious from first to last, and found an interest in dance when her pediatrician recommended ballet lessons to help her posture the elegance of which astounded her doctors throughout her medical trials. An intelligent young woman with a creative eye, she completed her undergraduate degree in Studio Art at Douglass in 1978 - she always loved drawing but shifted to a Masters in Dance Education, completing graduate studies at New York University. Odd jobs included walks with Thelonious Monk, and teaching with Milton Feher, ÂRaja of RelaxationÂ. She completed studies and certifications in Craniosacral Therapy, Somato-Emotional Release, Massage Therapy, Yoga, intergenerational Dance Turning the Wheel Productions, Conflict Resolution / mediation, the Past is Prologue Native American Learning ProgramÂ.and was in the midst of completing her Doctoral Dissertation on Aztec Dance at Texas WomenÂs University. She began teaching modern dance in Boulder, Colorado in the early 1980Âs, and performed extensively as a dancer in Colorado and Texas. In 1989, relocating to San Antonio found her teaching yoga, modern dance at both Trinity and Incarnate Word, and practicing massage. She founded, with friends, the San Antonio Dance Umbrella, The Modern Dance Co-Laboratory, and began a dance program at Palo Alto Community . Always, she gave herself over to teaching and learning with equal zeal. In 2006, she and Gemma Kennedy received a lifetime achievement award for their work. Her daughters, Amy Safrankova and Brigid Conroy look forward to celebrating a life beautifully lived at a service to be held at 6 pm on 11 May at The Blue Hole at the University of the Incarnate Word. Heartfelt thanks are extended to Dr. Bradley Kayser and his team, and the caring nurses at Odyssey. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the San Antonio Dance Umbrella.
