Obituary: WaltÂs birth, in a set of Army quarters at Ft. George Wright, Washington, interrupted a morning waffle party, which his parents were putting on for the post bachelor officers. From there, Walt grew up on a small one-battalion army post in Washington, Montana and Puerto Rico. On those posts, where an unamplified bugle call could be heard by everyone on the reservation, family life blended happily with military ceremony and routine. Love of country and flag, pride in the uniform, sense of duty and respect for authority were a way of life. WaltÂs parents, Walter, Sr. Colonel, Infantry and Beatrice were the consummate army couple. Their example and encouragement, and the military environment which they provided and which Walt loved, left no doubt in his mind concerning a career choice. He seized every opportunity for military service including attendance at two CMTC summer camps, high school ROTC, and enlistment in his local National Guard unit. Mobilization of his Guard unit in 1940 resulted in deployment of his coast artillery battery to Alaska, months before the onset of World War II. There, as a Corporal, Walt was the leader of a 155mm gun section guarding the sea approaches to Seward through Resurrection Bay. Walt had earlier competed for a slot at the West Point Prep School at Ft. Scott, California. In the fall of 1941 he was ordered there Âat the soldierÂs own expense to study for the 1942 entrance exams. In 1942 Walt won a National Guard appointment to West Point. He reported there that and joined his brother, Jim, for the war shortened three year course with the class of Â45. By virtue of his Army Brat upbringing, his military service, and the preparation provided at Ft. Scott, Walt easily adapted to cadet life. He embraced the Duty, Honor, Country ethic and made it the mantle for soldierly virtues which he already admired. He was proud to be a part of the Corps, which he always regarded as an elite group of men. He readily accepted the regimentation and discipline as preparation and payment for a lifetime military career. He performed sufficiently well in academics and conduct to participate, without restriction, in what passed for recreation and social life in those years. He wore the plumes and carried the sword of a cadet officer proudly. As it worked out, the West Point experience eliminated the possibility of combat duty in WWII. Walt was destined to pursue his military career in what came to be known as the Cold War. He commanded Infantry rifle companies in the Philippine Scouts 45th Inf PS, the 82nd Airborne Division 505th AIR and finally the 2nd Division 38th Inf in the Korean War. He commanded the 1st Battalion, 502nd Airborne Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, in 1964 and 1965. He commanded the 2nd Brigade, 101st Air Assault Division, in 1970 in the Vietnam War. Walt had instructor tours with the staff and facilities of the Infantry School and the Command and General Staff . He was privileged to serve an exchange tour with the British Parachute Regiment. He served as Executive Secretary of the Joint Secretariat for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He attended the Army War . Walt married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Stanford, in 1948. She was an Army brat and the perfect Army wife. had four children: Lorene, Walter III, Beatrice and Diane in that order. His family traveled together to new jobs, new schools and new friends at Presidio of San Francisco, Ft. Bragg, Ft. Benning, Ft. Leavenworth, England, Ft. Campbell, Washington, DC, and Carlisle Barracks. tent camped together across the United States and Western Europe. All that shared experience, travel and challenge produced some very adaptable and resilient children Â- and a happy, close-knit, and loving family. In retirement, Walt obtained his M.B.A. at Southern Methodist University. The kids went off to school and got married Â- almost overnight it seemed to Walt. On the positive side, the girls all settled within easy driving distance and Walt III settled in California, a nice place to visit. Walt is survived by Dorothy, his four children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. WaltÂs second career eventually led to home building, first as a construction superintendent and later as a general contractor. He served as President of one West Point Society and Vice President of another. He was President twice of his Kiwanis Club, President of his neighborhood association, and a precinct delegate for the Republican Party. Retirement mellowed Walt, allowing his family and friends to enjoy his charm, wit and grace even more. In their senior years, Walt and Dorothy demonstrated how to age gracefully. Others delighted in their company, due in large part to the continued zest for life and inspirational devotion to each other. MEMORIAL SERVICE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 2007 10:00 A.M.
