Obituary: Col. Patricia M. Miller, USA Ret., passed away 7, 2009, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born May 23, 1928, in Kaukauna, Wisconsin to Glen and Ruth Miller. Pat entered the Army Nurse Corps in 1958. She received her BSN from Boston University and her Masters Degree in from the University of Washington Seattle. She retired from the USA Nurse Corps after 22 years of service. Two of her last assignments were as Assistant Director of the WRAIN Program and as Director of the Army Nurse Corps er Activities Office. In 1979, Pat received the Dr. Anita Newcomb McGee Award of the National Society DAR. She spent part of her retirement years in Florida before returning to San Antonio. She is survived by her longtime companion, Lt. Col. Beverly Scoville, USA Ret.; brother, Robert R. Miller and wife Sylvia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Obituary: Col. Charles C. Underwood, US Army Ret, age 89, formerly public affairs officer at the Fourth Army US Army, Ft. Sam Houston, and a survivor of the Bataan death march, died 18, 2006, at the Army Residence Community, San Antonio, Texas. He was born 6, 1917, in Sugar Lake, Missouri, and lived most of his youth in Kansas. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1939, with a degree in journalism and an Army ROTC commission. He rejoined the Amarillo Globe-News where he had worked in the summer as a reporter. Charles was called to active duty 1941, with the 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Sam Houston. He was reassigned to the 31st Infantry in Manila, Philippines in May 1941. With the fall of Bataan in 1942, he became a prisoner of war of the Japanese until liberated in Japan in 1945. He and the former Geneva Jimmie Sullivan of Amarillo were married at Ft. Sam Houston on 3, 1945. His more than 31 years of active military service included command of infantry, armored infantry and armored units from platoon through brigade. Most of his staff assignments were in information and public affairs. He received a masters degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1950. Charles served twice in the Pentagon in the office of Public Affairs and was the chief of the public information division from 1964 to 1966. He also was information assistant to two secretaries of the Army and senior aide to the Commander-in-Chief, US Army, and Europe. When he retired in Honolulu in May 1972 he was chief of public affairs, US Army, Pacific and had held a similar assignment with Commander-in-Chief, Pacific. His decorations include Legion of Merit, with cluster, Bronze Star, with cluster, Army Commendation, with cluster, Purple Heart, with cluster. Combat Infantry Badge, Glider Badge, Army General Staff badge and various campaign medals. When Charles left San Antonio in 1964, he was made an alcade by the late Walter McAllister, then mayor of San Antonio, and was presented a certificate of appreciation from the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. When the family returned to San Antonio in 1972, he became active in the San Antonio Retired Officers chapter, serving as vice-president for public affairs for a number of years and was involved in Republican Party activities as a precinct chairman and a member of the Bexar Republican committee. He was a member of St. John Neuman Catholic Church, Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity, Military Officers Association of America, Association of the US Army, 31st Infantry Association, American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, Ex-Prisoners of War, and Disabled Veterans Association. Charles is survived by wife, Geneva; daughter, Victoria Lambdin and husband, Mark and granddaughter, Rebecca of San Marcos; two sons, Dr. Charles C. Underwood, Jr. of Kittery Point, ME and his three daughters, Megan Christian and husband, Jamie and their daughter, Riley of South Carolina, Sarah Fahrbach and husband, Chris of New York and Emily Underwood of New York, and son James Underwood and two grandchildren, James E. Underwood, presently stationed in Korea and Michelle Underwood of San Antonio. He was born in El Paso, TX, on 20, 1936, to Richard and Naomi Whitmire, Sr. He was a graduate of Texas A & M, class of 1958. A veteran, Richard served for 26-1/2 years in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps before retiring with the rank of Colonel. He proudly served his country in Vietnam, Bangkok, Thailand and was Commanding Officer of a Medical Research Unit in Nairobi, Kenya. Whit practiced veterinary medicine for nearly 50 years, most recently at Kitty Hawk Animal Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Whitmire of San Antonio; Children Dante DAgostino III of Rosharon, TX; Darryl Keith Whitmire and wife Katrina of Dallas, TX; John B. Eugene H. and Bernice E. Mitchell. Fred was a 1949 graduate of Galveston Ball High School. graduation, he attended Texas A&M University where he was the Corps Commander. Upon graduation in 1954, he received a commission as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army. He received his MasterÂs Degree in Public Administration from Shippensburg State in 1974. Fred served 26 years in the Army retiring as a Colonel in 1980. While in the Army, Fred served 2 combat tours in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action and the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism in aerial flight. He was also a recipient of the Combat InfantrymanÂs Badge, Master ParachutistÂs Badge, Legion of Merit with 2 OLC, among numerous other recognitions such as the PathfinderÂs Badge, Army Commendation Medal with 2 OLC, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Medal with 6 OLC and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lillian M. Grace. Harold attended South Dakota State University, graduating with the class of 1942 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He entered the US Army as an Aviation Cadet in May of 1943, serving as a navigator on a B17 crew in The European Theater during WWII. Following the war, returning to McDill AFB he married his lifelong partner Lillian M. Knight, of Tampa FL in 1946. Together, they had assignments in Guam, Japan, Ohio, New York, Greenland, California, Thailand, the Pentagon, and Texas. He served as both an aviator and an engineer during these assignments. He also served in the Korean War and Vietnam. He remained in the Air Force, eventually serving 28 years and retiring in San Antonio TX in 1971. Following his retirement, he spent many hours as a volunteer at Wilford Hall Hospital, and with the San Antonio Little Theater Group. Harold enjoyed lapidary work, woodworking, and enjoyed working in his yard and garden. He always loved a good joke, a drink with friends, and above all his family. We will miss him greatly. |

Obituary: Merton Lee Parks, Colonel, USAF Ret., of San Antonio, passed away on , May 31, 2004. Colonel Parks was born in Pollock, Louisiana on 27, 1912. He attended public school in Memphis, TN, and received his BS Degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, class of 1937. He was called to active duty on 5, 1940 as a 1st Lt in the U.S. Army. His service to his country spanned thirty-four years in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. During World War II, Colonel Parks served in the North African and Italian Campaign. He also served in France, Korea, Japan and the Vietnam era. Among his numerous decorations and awards, he received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and both Air Force and Army Commendation medals. His last tour of duty was at Lackland AFB as Comptroller. He retired from the U.S. Air Force on 1, 1970. Colonel Parks was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Retired Officers Association, National Association of Uniformed Services and the Military Order of World Wars. Obituary: Colonel Turner Buck Griffin, Jr. Army, Ret., age 75, passed away on , 10, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas. Buck was born in Henderson, Texas to his parents Turner and Allise Wylie Griffin. He graduated high school from Culver Military Academy in Indiana and was a 1958 graduate of the US Military Academy. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Artillery. Buck served in Command and Staff assignments at many stateside locations and posted overseas to Korea, Italy, Germany and Zaire. He served two combat tours in Vietnam. His primary duties were aviation related. Among awards he received during his military career: The Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, The Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Twenty-Two Air Medals, The Combat Infantryman Badge, The Master Army Aviator Badge, The Defense Meritorious Medal and The Legion of Merit. While in the service, he obtained an M.B.A. from Long Island University. Buck retired after 26 years with the rank of Colonel. Following his retirement, he served as an Admissions Officer for West Point from 1983-2006. Buck helped over 350 men and women become cadets at the U.S. Military Academy. The Superintendent of West Point awarded Buck the Department of the Army Civilian Commendation Award in 2006 for his service with the program. Buck not only loved the military, he also loved his family, reading, music, dogs and a decent glass of wine. Turner is survived by his wife, Charlotte Griffin; three children, Melanie Griffin, Turner Griffin III of Flower Mound, TX, and Laura Jellie of Madisonville, LA; four grandchildren, Rebecca, Alex, Rachel, and Chelsea; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah. Obituary: Col. James O. Darling, USA Ret, age 91, passed away 27, 2005. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mitz; and is survived by his daughter, Carol Darling Adelman of Bandera, TX and son-in-law, Dr. Sandy Adelman of Bandera and San Antonio; son, James O., Jr, and grandchildren, James III, Courtney and Kyle, all of Austin; and his special friend, Lois A. Taylor of Boca Raton, FL. Col. Darling was a graduate of John Carroll University and became a Research Chemist with Weirton Steel . He was drafted into the US Army in 1941. completing OfficerÂs Advanced Course, at Ft. Sam Houston, he became Operations and Training Staff Officer in the Far East Command during the Korean War. He returned to the Medical Field Service School at Ft. Sam Houston as Instructor of Logistics. He was assigned Chief of Plans and Operations Branch, Medical Division with the US Army Communications Zone, Europe, and later served as Personnel Commander, Valley Forge General Hospital; Chief of plans and Operations, Brooke Army Medical ; Administrative Officer of the Medical Research Team in Saigon, Vietnam; followed by executive Officer, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington, DC. He completed his Military er as Executive Officer of the Army Institute of Surgical Research at Ft. Sam Houston, TX in 1969, when he retired. His Military Honors include the Army Commendation Medal and Legion of Merit. ÂGentleman Jim was an endlessly supportive father to his lively son and daughter. He accompanied his wildlife-artist daughter, Carol on many field trips working with dangerous and life-threatening animals. He then built all the exhibit structures for CarolÂs Art Shows and attended every one. retirement, he worked as Hospital Consultant for the State of Florida. In his retirement years, he reformed his Optimist Organization to better serve the academic needs of teenagers as he and his wife, Mitz, personally sponsored several youngsters with their education. He often said his favorite sound was the laughter that filled the Darling home as it became the favorite place to be for the many friends of his two children. He was member of the Military OfficerÂs Association of America, San Antonio Retired Officers Association, San Antonio Chapter 14 of the DAV, San Antonio Optimist Club, and the Christopher Columbus Italian Society. Son Jim relates: DadÂs modest and quiet manner belied his tremendous personal and professional achievements. He was a superb father, adoring husband and great friend to so many people and organizations. He taught us the ideals of decency, community service and patriotism. Being the son of parents from Pietrabbondante, Italy, he served America as the finest of soldiers. Everyone who knew him thoroughly enjoyed his buoyant and fun-loving personality. Perhaps his Italian heritage added to his sense of adventure; as he enjoyed such diverse interests as being a glider pilot, to horse back riding. He had an extra ordinary artistic sensibility that affected everything he touched. A true renaissance man combining a love for the sciences as well as music and literature, he is greatly missed. |

Obituary: IWO JIMA VETERAN COLONEL CLEMENT H. WILL, USA RET. Clement H. Will was born 9 May, 1927, in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from the San Antonio Vocational & Technical High School in , 1944. He worked as a machinist apprentice for the Missouri Pacific Lines until age 17, when he volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps. Wounded on Iwo Jima on 3 , 1945, he returned to the Fifth Marine Division for the initial occupation of Japan. He returned to San Antonio in May of 1946 and entered Trinity University. He received a direct commission in the U. S. Army Reserve as a 2nd Lt. Infantry in , 1949. attending the Infantry Scholl he returned to San Antonio to marry Mary Louis Cantú. The coupleÂs first duty station was Berlin Germany. He enjoyed assignments with many of the U.S. ArmyÂs finest units as an infantry and later a Field Artillery Officer. Some of the units were the 1st Infantry Division, 82nd Airborne Division, and 101st Airborne Division. The majority of his assignments were as a commander at levels from Platoon to Brigade. His last foreign tour was as Chief of the Military Assistance Advisory Group, Portugal. His total overseas service in peace and war was 14 years out of 32 years active duty, 2years USMC and 30 years U.S. Army. Colonel Will Received 23 separated U.S. and foreign decorations and many service medals. Included were 3 Legions of Merit, 3 Bronze Star Medals, The Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, and 8 Air Medals one with V device. He also received the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Gold Star and Silver Star. Colonel Will Retired from active service in 1979 and worked for the Guy Chipman as a sales agent and manager. In 1985 he was honored as manager of the year and was made a vice-president of the company in 1986, and retired n 1987. Colonel Will was a life member of the VeteranÂs of Foreign Wars Post 7108, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Disabled American Veterans, and the 5th Marine Division Association. He was National President of the 5th Marine Division Association in 1986 and sponsored the 1986 reunion in San Antonio. He spent his retirement years gardening, traveling and working as a volunteer. Colonel Will attended many army schools to include the Command and General Staff at Fr. Leavenworth, KS, was a graduated of the Army War class of 1971 at Carlisle Barracks, PA. He helped to organize the Alamo Chapter, Texas, as well as the 15, 20, 21, 23 and 28 Districts of the National Association for the Uniformed Services and was elected the Chapters Founding President. He was elected to the national board of directors in 1992. Colonel Will received his B.A. from the University of Maryland in 1961, and M.A. from Shippensburg State , PA in 1971. Both degrees were in Political Science. During his retirement years he remained very interested in governmental affairs and made his views known to officials at all levels of government. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary L. Will, of San Antonio, daughter Linda G. Will; granddaughter, Dominique Nicole Philipp; son, Clark B. Will and daughter-in-law, Donna G. Will; grandsons, Nathanael Aaron Will and Nicholas Andrew Will; sisters, Claribel Bierschwale and Henrietta Brokholm. Obituary: Col. Alan David Pinkus, USAF Ret. went to be with the Lord on , 25, 2011. Marjorie, his wife of 39 years, preceded him in death. Col. Pinkus was born and raised in upstate New York. He enlisted in the USAF in 1948 and was a charter member of the Air Force Medical Services in 1949. In 1951, Staff Sergeant Pinkus was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Medical Service Corps, and served as a Services Administrator in the United States, Japan and Korea. His last tour of active duty was in Washington, DC, where he managed Air Force Reserve Medical Forces programs. Between active duty tours, Col. Pinkus served as a Ready Reservist in unit and individual programs. He retired from active duty in 1981, earning the Legion of Merit, Meritorious and Reserve Forces Medal with Silver Hourglass. Col. Pinkus earned a BA in religion Magna Cum Laude, an MA in government Summa Cum Laude and was completing his PhD requirements for government studies at Louisiana State University when he was called for active duty in 1970 and assigned to the Pentagon. Following military retirement, Col. Pinkus taught American Government at San Antonio and the San Antonio branch of Wayland Baptist University. To add to his many accomplishments, he was an ordained and licensed Southern Baptist Pastor, a trustee and devoted volunteer at Grace Point Church in San Antonio. Col. Pinkus is survived by his sister-in-law, Joann Pinkus; niece, Ellarose Pinkus both living in California; a nephew and niece, Dr. and Mrs. Jack Shirley and children of San Antonio, and his adoptive family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Garza, Sr. and five sons: Roy Jr., Malcolm, Christopher, Nicholas and Andrew Garza with whom were with him until the end, all of San Antonio. Obituary: Colonel James L. Steele, USAF Ret age 95 of The Woodlands, TX, died , 19, 2007. He was born in Beeville, TX, on 27, 1911, and grew up in Corpus Christi. He graduated from Texas A&M as an electrical engineer and US Army second lieutenant in 1937. He served in the US Army Air Corps and became part of the US Air Force until his retirement as a colonel in 1968. He endured the hardships of the Great Depression and served his country during three wars. He devoted his life to his family, his church and his country. He was a Texas Aggie to the core, first as a student and member of the Aggie band, then later as an active alumnus. He took great pride in his grandson, Cory, and granddaughter, Bunny, following him in the Aggie tradition. Although his activities had been limited in recent years, daily visits from Bunny and his daughter-in-law, Sheila, were a source of great enjoyment to him. Throughout his life, he had been an avid pilot, handball player and golfer. He combined a keen intellect with the highest ethical and moral standards. He was an example to all that knew him. Colonel Steele was preceded in death by his wives, Patty, Rose and Mary, as well as his sisters, Dorothy and Lillian. He is survived by his son, Jim, and daughter-in-law, Sheila; grandchildren Bunny, Cory, Carmen and Jimmy; and sisters, Jessie, Rosa Belle and Christine. |

Obituary: Allan H. Thompson, age 76, died at University Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, on , 5, 2010. The cause of death was a heart attack with complications. Born 24 , 1933, in Ferryville, Wisconsin to Adolph and Amanda Thompson, he grew up in La Crosse, Wisconsin where he graduated from Logan High School. On 15, 1952, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. A veteran of both the Korean War and the Vietnam War, his distinguished military career included assignments in Illinois, Japan twice, Germany, Maryland, Texas, and Greece. On 31, 1978, Al retired in San Antonio, Texas, in the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He continued to serve his nation as a Department of the Air Force civil servant until 1994 when he retired, culminating in more than 40 years of service to his country. In retirement, Al remained devoted to his country and fellow service members. Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Eileen Barney Thompson, his son William Thompson and wife Dianne of Red Bank New Jersey, his daughter Catherine Lovelady Lt Col, USAF, Ret. of Colorado Springs Colorado, and his four granddaughters: Linda Thompson, Elizabeth Thompson, Patricia Thompson, and Katherine Lovelady. Al is also survived by his two sisters, Meg Feally and husband Frank of San Jose California and Doris Grimsled of La Crosse, Wisconsin. A Mass for Allan Thompson will be held at 11:30 a.m. on , 9, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 20523 Huebner Road followed at 1:00 p.m. with internment with military honors at Fort Sam Houston National . Obituary: CMSGT Norman D. Crawford, USAF Ret., was passed into the hands of our Lord on , 16, 2011, at the age of 83. He was born 24, 1927, in Bush, Louisiana to Albert and Emily Crawford. NormanÂs life was marked by service to God and country, as well as love of family. graduating from Covington High School in 1945, he immediately joined the Army Air Corps. He was recalled by the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and served for the next 30 years, retiring in 1978 as a Chief Master Sergeant Â- the highest enlisted rank. From there, he joined the federal Civil Service, retiring from the Air Force Cryptologic Support at Kelly Air Force Base after 14 years. Norman was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; an active member and trustee at Crossroads Baptist Church; and a member of the Retired Chiefs Association and Helotes Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents and six older siblings Â- five brothers and a sister. Norman is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Frances Crawford; daughter Sonia Crawford of Austin; and sons Doug Crawford of Helotes, Gary Crawford of Lytle, Stan Crawford of Keystone Heights, Florida; Glenn Crawford of San Antonio, and Neal Crawford of Boerne. Obituary: CMSgt Billy R. Cumpton, USAF Ret., age 72, passed away on , 7, 2003. He was born in Abilene TX on 29, 1931, and was the son of the late John Wesley Cumpton and Lula Mae Martin. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a dedicated family man. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Judy Muriel Cumpton, whom he shared his life with for 46 years. He also spent 50 years of his life in loyal, dedicated and patriotic service to the United States government. His 30-year career in the United States Air Force spanned several continents, varied positions and occupations, and he held positions in both functional and headquarter levels in his long and successful career. His many military decorations include the Bronze Star for his time spent during the Vietnam War. He moved back to Texas after his retirement from a 20-year career in Civil Service. He is survived and the memory of his life carried on by his children, Dale Wesley Cumpton and wife, Jackie of Atlanta, GA, and Sherry Booth and her husband, Richard of San Antonio, TX; and two grandsons, Shaun Booth of San Antonio, and Kyle Cumpton of Atlanta, GA. He will be returning to Virginia to be joined with his wife at Parklawn Memorial Park. He enjoyed fishing w/ his son Jeremy. He was also an avid Spurs Fan. He was a very loving and caring person battling COPD for 7 yrs in which he never complained. He left us the same way he lived, peacefully. He will be sadly missed by many but especially by his wife of 31 years, Audrey, whom he gave 31 years of a wonderful life and love in America and their son, Jeremy. During his retirement, he stayed active in the Boy Scouts, as part of their Eagle Scout Review Board. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War as a navigator in the United States Air Force. retiring from the military he returned to college at UTSA, earning a Master of Arts Degree in 1977. He then taught chemistry at Holmes High School for over 20 years before retiring in 1991. He was a lifetime member of the American Philatelic Society and a volunteer at Wilford Hall. Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Shirley-Ruth Kanter Meyerson. He is survived by 3 children, Cheryl Levinson and husband L. Alvin proudly served his country in the United States Army for 20 years. He served three tours in Vietnam and was highly decorated; his medals include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. He was also type-rated in 188 aircraft. This country home became center stage for family and friends to gather for celebrations, holidays, and reunions for many years. Obituary: Brig. Gen. William Walton Dunn, USAF Ret. was born into eternal life on his 79th birthday, , 21, 2009 in San Antonio. A Texas native of 4 generations, he was born to parents G. Harvey Sr. and Ione W. Dunn in 1930 in Corpus Christi. Bill achieved the rank of Eagle Scout while attending Corpus Christi High School and was accepted at the U.S. Naval Academy at age 17. He graduated with the USNA class of 1952, and subsequently entered the U.S. Air Force from which he retired as a Brigadier General after 24 years of active duty. He earned a Ph.D. in Physics from Texas A&M University during his Air Force service. He was honored with the Distinguished Service Medal in 1976 which culminated a distinguished career in the service of his country, and reflected the highest credit upon himself and the USAF. In addition to his extraordinary military career he led a full and rich life in etirement. He was an entrepreneur who started the Texas Tub and Spa in 1978. It was the first hot tub business in San Antonio and still flourishes today. Co-founder of Remote Operating Systems, Inc., he held several patents in the remote sensor oil field business. He was President of the Petroleum Club during its formative years. He was a multifaceted person who served on the city council and as mayor of Hill Country Village. Bill was a very active member of the Church of Reconciliation serving on the vestry and co-founding the Cancer Support Group. He was a good man. We will miss him. Bill is survived by his well-loved wife of 57 years, Dru; his well-loved children, Jennifer, Judith, Jane and Drake; their spouses; and 6 grandchildren. |

Obituary: Brigadier General Robert Francis McDermott ÂMcD died 28, 2006 of complications from a stroke. He was born on 31, 1920 in Boston, Massachusetts to Alphonsus and Anna McDermott. attending elementary school in his hometown of Readville, he graduated from Boston Latin School in 1937, where he won the music prize playing trombone. He attended Norwich University from 1937 to 1939. McD received an appointment to the United States Military Academy in 1939, and graduated and was commissioned on 19, 1943. He earned a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1950. On 20, 1943, McD married Alice Patricia McDermott at Trinity Chapel at West Point. Following their wedding, McD and Alice traveled to California where McD learned to fly the P-38 Lockheed Lightning. He was assigned to the 474th Fighter Bomber Group as its Deputy Group Operations Officer and flew 61 combat missions during World War II in the European Theatre. the war, he remained in Europe on General EisenhowerÂs staff. Following this assignment, McD served in the Pentagon and thereafter, attended Harvard Business School, earning an MBA in 1950. He then taught economics at West Point for four years. In 1954 McD was assigned to the newly established Air Force Academy as Vice Dean and Professor of Economics. In 1956, he was appointed Dean of Faculty and, in 1959, President Eisenhower appointed McD the first Permanent Dean of Faculty and promoted him to Brigadier General. At that time, he was the youngest flag-rank officer in all of the armed services. guiding the first ten graduating classes at the Air Force Academy, McD retired from the Air Force in 1968. In recognition of McDÂs contributions to the Air Force, the Academy named the cadet library for him and named him the ÂFather of Modern Military Education. In 1968 McD joined USAA United Services Automobile Association as Executive Vice President, and became its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1969. His management of USAAÂs employees and treatment of its members was based on his belief in the Golden Rule Â- to treat everyone with dignity and respect, and to allow everyone the opportunity to achieve his or her potential. He ensured that all employees were well-trained, well-paid, and had very good job benefits, and introduced a four-day work week to give employees more time with their families. He encouraged self-development by matching employee tuition expenses. By implementing this philosophy, USAAÂs employees provided the best possible service to USAAÂs members and enabled USAA to be named one of the best companies to work for in the United States in 1993 with no company rated higher than USAA. Under McDÂs leadership, USAAÂs membership grew four hundred percent, and assets owned and managed grew from $207 million to more $30 billion. USAA also partnered with Opryland USA to develop Fiesta Texas during McDÂs chairmanship. For all of the awards McD achieved at USAA, he always attributed USAAÂs success to its wonderful employees. In 1993 McD retired as Chairman and CEO of USAA, and remained as Chairman Emeritus. Following his retirement, McD continued to be active in the community with business and charitable organizations. On 6, 1994, McD married Marion Slemon of Colorado Springs. enjoyed his retirement in San Antonio and Colorado Springs, as well as traveling to visit family and friends. McD worked tirelessly to advance economic development in San Antonio. His efforts included the following: in 1974 he was elected Chairman of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce; in 1975 he co-founded the Economic Development Foundation and served as its Chairman until 1980; he was a co-founder of United San Antonio to promote social cohesiveness during the 1970s and 1980s; in 1984 he co-founded the Texas Research and Technology Foundation which began development of the Texas Research Park; in the 1980s, McD established a volunteer corps and mentor program at USAA to encourage USAA employees to become actively involved in social and charitable projects throughout San Antonio and to serve as role models for underprivileged youth in San Antonio; when the San Antonio Spurs were to be sold in the early 1990s, McD led a group of local investors to buy the team, and served as chairman, to assure it would stay in San Antonio. For his wide-ranging efforts on behalf of San Antonio, the City of San Antonio named a section of Interstate Highway 10 West as the ÂMcDermott Freeway. McD also received recognition for his business and educational activities, including the following: he was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 1987 and the American National Business Hall of Fame in 1989; in 1993 West Point selected him to receive its Distinguished Graduate Award; in 1994 Fortune selected him as Laureate in Junior AchievementÂs National Business Hall of Fame; in 1998 Harvard Business School extended its highest honor, the Alumni Achievement Award, as a tribute to his extraordinary accomplishments at the Air Force Academy and USAA; and in 2006 the University of the Incarnate Word established the Robert F. McDermott Professorship in Organizational Leadership. For all of these accomplishments and honors, McD always said that his greatest blessings were his faith, his family, his country and his dear friends. McD was preceded in death by his parents, his brother David, and his beloved wife of 47 years, Alice Patricia McDermott. Obituary: Brig. Gen. Kenneth Ray Milam, Jr., USAF Ret., age 77, passed away at TRISUN in Windcrest on 4, 2007. He was born 25, 1929, in Uvalde, TX, to Kenneth and Adelene Saunders Milam. He graduated from Brackenridge High School; earned a Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of New Mexico; a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from Chaminade in Honolulu, Hawaii; earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management; and attended the Executive Management Program of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School. He was commissioned in 1953. attending pilot training, he served the next 3 years as a fighter pilot in Korea and Japan, and also served 2 tours in Vietnam. In 1967, he went on leave status from the Air Force after being selected by 20th Century Fox to do the stunt flying and combat scenes from ÂTora! Tora! Tora!, a motion picture documenting the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1991, he married Claudia Lenore Kennamore. Together, they wintered aboard their 46 Down East Trawler in the Florida waters for 5 years and traveled the summer months in the cool Northwestern U.S., where she is from. In 1995, they decided to return to San Antonio and made their home in Windcrest, TX. He was a member of The Daedalians, The Quiet Birdman and The Air Force Association. He was an inspiration to many and will be missed by all who loved and knew him. Kenneth is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Claudia L. Milam; beloved sons, Christopher F. Milam and wife, Lesya, and Lt. Col. Curtis S. Obituary: Brigadier General Lillian Dunlap, USA Ret., 14th Chief of the United States Army Nurse Corps, age 81, of San Antonio, died , 3, 2003 at Brooke Army Medical , Fort Sam Houston, TX. Born in Mission, TX, she was the daughter of the late Ira and Mary Dunlap. She spent her childhood in San Antonio, graduated from Jefferson High School, and received her nursing diploma at Santa Rosa Hospital School of . Lillian entered the United States Army Nurse Corps in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater with the 59th Station Hospital throughout World War II. Her career spanned 33 years in the United States Army culminating in her promotion to Brigadier General and appointment as Chief of the Army Nurse Corps. Her assignments included service at Brooke General Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, TX; Camp Chaffee, AR; Europe; Director, Department of Science, Medical Field Service School now the Academy of Sciences, Fort Sam Houston, TX; Chief Nurse, U. S. Army Medical , Okinawa; Chief, Army Nurse Corps Branch, Washington, DC; Chief Nurse, First Army, Fort Meade, MD; and Chief Nurse, Walter Reed Army Medical , Washington, DC. As Corps Chief from 1971 to 1975, she led the implementation of the Army Nurse Corps Contemporary Practice Program, the program that introduced the Nurse Practitioner role in the Army. She was also instrumental in establishing the baccalaureate degree in nursing as a requirement for service in the Army Nurse Corps. She held multiple military awards including the Distinguished Service Medal.
