Obituary: Cynthia Myrtle Wiggins Reddell was born in Nome, Texas, 18, 1918. Her lifes story included East Texas rice fields, the Great Depression and World War II, a small, oak covered haven in Alamo Heights, a lifelong love of music, and always the beauty of the Earth, especially the birds of the air. Her story ended on 28, 2015, in Austin, Texas. Cynthia lived her early years with her family in Beaumont, Texas, where she was educated and became head bookkeeper for the First National Bank of Beaumont. She and her older sister, Mittie, worked to pay for the home where the family could live without the fear of displacement that plagued so many during the Depression. Her mother, Mallie Sherman Wiggins, encouraged a love of music and Cynthia, along with her mother and 6 siblings, sang beautiful four part harmony together, sometimes serenading neighbors in the evenings from their front porch. She taught herself to play the piano and played by ear, never learning to read music. Her fondest memory of those years was the experience of singing with her sisters, Mittie and Norma. sang in their church, throughout the area at civic events and on the radio. Calling themselves the Brushwood Sisters, they sang for servicemen stationed in East Texas and Louisiana during the war years. This experience would remain a highlight of her life. She was quite the looker and an exuberant extrovert. Her nickname was Myrt the Flirt. There were numerous family stories that would bear out the appropriateness of the name. When she moved to San Antonio in the late 1940s, she began going by her first name, Cynthia. She got a job at the San Antonio Express and set her eyes on a young widower with 2 daughters. She and Bill Reddell married in 1950 at the First Baptist Church, where they would be lifelong members. During the next 50 years, Cynthia was an active member of her church, volunteering with young people, singing in the Sanctuary Choir, serving meals at the Fourth Street Inn, and as a member of numerous committees. She was proud of her work as a substitute teacher in the Alamo Heights School District as well as being an activist for the preservation of her neighborhood against commercial encroachment. She helped start the Baptist Memorial Hospital Thrift Store and was bookkeeper for the Billy Graham crusade during Hemisfair. Cynthias heart was always open to those who needed extra help. She was able to converse with anyone about anything. Some of her rules for living included: keep the binoculars ready since you never know what might fly into the backyard, always wear lipstick in public, and never turn down an opportunity for a hot, strong cup of coffee. Family that preceded her in death were her father, James O. Wiggins, Sr, mother, Mallie Wiggins, siblings Mittie Wiggins, Jim Wiggins, Bill Wiggins and Warren Wiggins. Surviving her to celebrate her story are her wonderful baby sister and loving caregiver, Norma Wiggins of Austin, her brother, Charles Wiggins of Beaumont, her daughters, Jean Berggren of Burlington, Vermont, Judy Nolen and husband, Don, of Champaign, Illinois, and Molly Hornbuckle and husband, Bill, of Georgetown. She and Bill had 6 grandchildren, Kirsten Berggren of Burlington, Vermont, Nathan Berggren and wife, Jen of Los Angeles, California, Jude Nolen and Lahna, of Chicago, Illinois, Jessica Nolen of Champaign, Illinois, Logan Kimble and wife, Hayley, of Austin, Texas and Carter Kimble, and wife Ashley, of Edmund, Oklahoma. She had 11 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. We recognize that many people come into our life story to give it more joy and meaning. Some of those people for Cynthia toward the end of her life were her caregivers at Brookdale North Austin and Hospice Austin. Visitation will be held at 1:00 pm on , 4, 2015 at First Baptist Church, 515 McCullough Ave., San Antonio, Texas, with the Service at 2:00 pm in the Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Hospice Austin at 4107 Spicewood Springs Road, Suite 100, Austin, Texas 78759 or at their website, hospiceaustin.org. |
