Obituary: BURLESON -- NaRay Ratliff passed away , Sept. 4, 2014, in Fort Worth. Service: 10 a.m. in Laurel Land Chapel of Chimes. Interment: North Belton , Belton. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. at Laurel Land of Fort Worth. NaRay was born to Emaline "Emma" and Albert W. Finch on Oct. 20, 1919, on a farm west of Belton. graduating from Belton High School, she entered Mary Hardin Baylor where her father was the foreman of the college farm for 25 years. she left college, she moved to Arlington, Va., where she worked in the adjunct general's office in the Pentagon until the end of World War II. When she came back to Texas, her father had moved the family to Fort Worth when he became employed at Consolidated (General Dynamics). She found employment and began her career in the rodeo world. NaRay, along with the late Velda Tindall Smith (well-known trick rider), decided there needed to be a barrel racing association. She handled all of the ground work, including all letters, memos and surveys of rodeo producers and prospective members, to determine the amount of interest. Being a charter member, she served as the Texas Barrel Racing Association (TBRA) secretary from the before the official Day One start through 1963. Recognition was given to both Velda and NaRay in a book "The Cowgirls," written by Joyce Gibson Roach, a Texas Christian University teacher, published in 1978 and again in 1997. Holding down a full-time job as a secretary to a busy oil company in Fort Worth, NaRay found time to compete in local rodeos. She was secretary for the M-S Ranch Rodeo for over 15 years. In 1963-1965 she was secretary for Central Rodeo Association (CRA) Finals in Graham. From 1965-1967, she published the bulletin for the CRA and ran their finals each year. She wrote a barrel racing article for the International Rodeo Association Monthly with headquarters in Oklahoma City, Okla. With the young TBRA growing stronger, the decision for a National Barrel Racing Association was made. State barrel racing clubs across the country and in Canada got the help to organize through her efforts and the TBRA became the basis and strong hold for what is now the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). Several of the TBRA saddle winners (annual champions) went on to join the WPRA, such as Mildred Farris, Martha Josey, Sherry Price and many others. She rode enthusiastically from 1948 to 1968. From then on, most of her time went to her new position at Miller Brewing and to her husband, Jim, also new in 1968. enjoyed trips in their travel trailer which covered each of the 48 states. attended the All American Quarter Horse Futurity in Ruidosa, N.M., on Labor Day consecutively for 29 years. NaRay was a past president of the 700-member Beta Sigma Phi, president and vice president of the Miller Brewing Co. Activity Club. Since retiring, she has served two terms as president of the MBC Retirees Association and on its planning committee. NaRay McHood Ratliff thrived on keeping constant with the original TBRA and keeping in touch with the other groups instrumental in getting the association off the ground during its inception. She has priceless souvenirs and articles from her past years with the TBRA. But most of all, she had priceless memories that lasted a lifetime. In 2002, NaRay was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in Belton before it was moved to the historical section of Fort Worth. Survivors: NaRay is survived by her husband of 45 years, James "Jim" Ratliff; stepdaughter, Patricia Jacobs of Converse; stepson, Steve Omelan of Conroe; and several nieces and nephews. |
