Obituary: Annie Pearl Lazenby Ray died 15, 2012 at Saint Francis Hospital. She was born 2, 1921, in Paris, TN, to the late, Lee Albertus and Bizzie Pearl Burnett Lazenby. She and her husband of almost 59 years, Lafayette Clinton Ray, were devoted to each other until his death in 2004. Their only child, James Albert Jimmy Ray died at age 13. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Frank and Noel D. Lazenby. Survivors include her sister, Rosa Brugett; and two sisters-in-law, Nellivee Pickle, and Jane Groves; her nieces, Ouida Moon, Peggy Fennell, Joan Miles, Julia Siler, Janice Sinquefield, Anita Roy, Linda Darrell, and Gail McWilliams; and nephews Robert Brugett, Jeff Graves, Gary Ray, Larry Ray, and Dale Ray; and a host of great nieces and nephews and many extended family members and friends. Annie was always positive, and cheerful, and fun to be with. Her family and friends will forever cherish the time and love we shared with her. She led a long and active life, beginning on dairy farms managed by her father. She loved milking cows by hand and riding horses bareback and standing. She worked as a riveter during WWII at the Fischer Steel Aircraft Plant in Memphis, making B-25s for the war effort. She and Clinton were married shortly after his return from the European theater of WWII, having earned numerous medals including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Their only son, Jimmy, was a beautiful, happy child who succumbed to complications following his third open heart surgery at age 13. Annie handled this terrible loss with grace and faith. Through the years she was very supportive of her extended family, always ready to babysit toddler nieces and nephews or great nieces and nephews, care for a sick relative or friend, open her home to her Dad or other family member, and help others wherever she saw a need. She and Clinton traveled extensively, visiting every state except N. Dakota, S. Dakota, and Alaska. Even at 90, she could recall details of many trips. She was a prolific photographer. Her favorite pastime in recent years has been to review her vast collection of photos and to show them to anyone she encountered. The family will receive friends at Memphis and Memorial Gardens 5599 Poplar Avenue at 12:00 p.m. on , 18, 2012. services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the . Interment will be at Memorial Gardens (formerly Memory Hill Gardens). Mrs. Ray would be pleased if memorials were made to St. Matthews United Methodist Church or to the charity of the donors choice. |

Obituary: Marie Browning Ray died on 1, 2011. She was 93 years old. She was the daughter of Robert William and Bessie Mae Newton Browning. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years, Colonel William L. Ray, her brother, William H. Browning, Sr., her sister, Hazel Browning Poe, and her niece, Joanna Browning Kelley. She graduated from Tyner High School and Kirkman Business . Upon graduation, she was employed by the law firm of Lively, Lively, and Thrasher. When Mr. Thrasher was appointed Register of Hamilton , she moved to the courthouse as his deputy. When her husband was assigned to Governor Island, New York and the Newark, New Jersey Depot with the U.S. Army, Marie worked in the legal department of the Titeflex Corporation that made copper tubing for military aircraft. During World War II, while her husband was stationed at Ft. Lee Virginia, she began her volunteering career at the USO near the camp. returning to Chattanooga, she was a Gray Lady at Erlanger Hospital. She was active in civic and community affairs and in 1954 became affiliated with the Salvation Army Toy Store. In 1995, she and her husband were recognized as Volunteers of the Year for 40 years of continued service. She has continued with that service, health permitting. being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, she became a volunteer for Reach to Recovery of the American Cancer Society. She was a past president of the Episcopal Church Women at Grace Episcopal Church, the Red Bank Riding Club, and Hickory Valley Garden Club. She is survived by one daughter, Virginia (Ginny) Marie Ray Combs (William), Powell, Tennessee; one granddaughter, Caroline Marie Combs-Young (Gregg Young), Knoxville, Tennessee; nephews, William H. Browning, Jr. (Bettye), Savannah, Georgia and Robert W. Browning (Linda), Birmingham, Alabama. Sincere gratitude is extended to the following: special friends Lynda Fisher and Dwight Ash for their faithful, loving, and kind care for Marie, Hospice of Chattanooga for their compassion, and Bill Combs and Gregg Young for the gentle understanding, support, and flexibility they have shown over the past 2 months.
