Obituary: Valerine Beryle Wolfe was born to Virgil Dorothy Bauer and Paul Wolfe in Dickinson, North Dakota on 17th, 1929. She was a cute, round-faced little girl with a sunny disposition. At age five her father and mother separated and Virgil, with Valerine in tow, headed west eventually settling in Portland Oregon. Virgil set up their lives with the tenacity required of a single woman providing for a young daughter during difficult economic times. It was the middle nineteen thirties and jobs were as scarce as hens teeth. With the help of brothers and sisters as well as working odd jobs Virgil established a life for her and her daughter which was meager but always included dogs. Virgil loved dogs and so did Valerine, especially collies. During this time Virgil met and fell in love with Clarence Joseph Wollertz known to his friends and family as Buster. were married in of 1936 with Buster adopting Valerine as his own daughter and new family was born. In 1943, not long after settling into their home in Portland, Buster was inducted into the Navy serving throughout the duration of the war on board the escort carrier USS Steamer Bay. His ship saw much action in the south Pacific and won a series of battle stars and Valerine was proud of her new fathers wartime efforts. the war Buster and Virgil settled into a quiet life in Portland, Oregon and Valerine entered high school at Gresham High. In 1943 the movie Lassie Come was released and Valerine and her mother would take one of their collie dogs down to movie theaters where kids could pet it thinking it may be the real Lassie. Valerine was a hard worker and started to show this trend with jobs such as waitressing and working at PGE in the office while keeping up her high school curriculum. And it was around this time my friends that Valerines life changed forever. It all started with a young gun-slinger from McGill, Nevada by the name of Dean Reed and, according to reports, it was love at first sight. In fact, if one studies the records it almost had to be. Val was 16 and Dean was 15 when they met and their meeting led to a marriage that burned brightly for almost sixty-two years. So, after the usual stint of high school dating, parties, cars, beaches, and friends they entered into marriage on 26, 1950, the ceremony taking place at Deans parents home on SE 49th in Portland. Valerine was, to say the least, a powerhouse of pure energy. She was a beautiful and determined young woman and a match for Dean in every way. soon found out that they shared the same interests which included parties and friends, boating and fishing, animals and farms and well, children. Their first child, Kim, was born in 1952 and brought a sunny smile to their farmhouse in Redland, Oregon. Kim played and grew amongst the dogs and cats and cows and chickens and then in 1953 a second daughter was born, Shawn. She was to die only a year later from Sudden Infant Death syndrome. With the death of Shawn, Dean and Val faced the first real tragedy of their lives and handled it with the grace and strength of a couple in love. The following year Val gave birth to a boy named Marc and the family made a move to the Halsey district into a little house in a neighborhood of young couples with children. At this time Dean worked at the Journal newspaper and Val handled the household chores while being a mom and somehow found time for volleyball with her lady friends. Valerine immersed herself in motherhood and loved baking with Kim and trying to keep Marc out of trouble. Both Dean and Val enjoyed their social lives with other couples with children and made many friends with like interests at this time. It was weekends on the river skiing or sunning on a dock at a mountain lake. The outdoor adventures were many and full of fun and new experiences. About this time during the late fifties the newspaper went on strike and Dean along with a co-worker started a direct mail business and Valerine found herself as part of a team with her husband building an advertising business. Vals creative mind and graphic talents helped to shape the new business into a successful enterprise all the while taking care of her young family. It was hard work for both husband and wife but they were young and they devoted themselves and made it all work. In 1960 Dean and Val built a new house in Milwaukie. Here Valerine was able to mix work and kids with a new interest, gardening which was to become a passion in her later life. also began attending a local Presbyterian church. With kids grown and the marriage of daughter Kim to Michael Oberg in 1974, Dean and Val began spending more time traveling with business friends enjoying many outdoor adventures as well as trips to Europe, Hong Kong, The Bahamas, Japan and other places. It was a time to explore where ancestors came from and Valerine delved into this venture with her usual enthusiasm. She compiled geneology files and traced both her and her husbands family history. Around this time Dean and Val also took up salmon fishing out of Ilwaco spending countless weekend hours fishing and running their boat. Valerine was a lady of projects and kept immaculate records of finances as well as a photographical history of her family and friends. As the years went by Valerine and Dean began spending more and more time at home, developing friendships within the farm community they lived in and taking care of their property and livestock. Valerines pace never slackened, nor did her enthusiasm for her family or interests and as the years went by she began finding inner peace with her continued... |
