Obituary: Work Hard and Live Hard, The Life of Erma Rose: The year of 1923 was just another year until the day of May twenty-second, or is that really the day? There has been much debate on which day Ermas birthday truly falls. According to her birth certificate, Erma was born on May 23, 1922. However, Grace Guinn, Ermas mother, said that she was born on May 22, 1923. She may be eighty-two or she may be eighty-three. It is just one years difference! Who is keeping track anyway? The day or year she was born does not matter. What does matter is that she is here and has blessed our lives beyond measure. Erma was the first of three children born to Grace Ann and Delva Guinn. She was born at home weighing in at ten pounds. This is small compared to her younger brothers Emral and Albert. Emral weighed fourteen pounds at birth! Erma was raised with a hard work ethic and a love for God. Her earliest memory holds the soft white gold that was prevalent and a huge part of her life, cotton. She remembers looking out of the small house her family lived in and seeing the huge field of cotton that lay just beyond her front door. She saw her mother tying her brother to a wagon wheel so that he would stay out of the fire. Erma quickly learned there was no work harder than plowing and maintaining that field. One day she began to complain that she did not like cooking and doing the housework. So, her mama gave her a plow and sent her out in the field. Erma worked for half a day and never complained again about the house work! Growing up Guinn: Ermas childhood was filled with a plethora of emotions and events. Her family was always together. Where you found one, you found them all. The family was the number one concern for all. You did what was best for all, not just what was best for you. were always financially poor, but rich in love. As Erma said, "We were poor as Jobs turkey." Erma was daddys little girl. He spoiled her to the best of his ability. Ermas mother, Grace, was the strict disciplinarian. Erma said, "I came home and did what my mama told me to do!" Everything she learned at home was a practical skill that could be used to survive. Grace made sure that Erma had one skill down pat: cooking. Cooking was a big responsibility for the Guinn family and it was Ermas job to get it done. Erma began preparing the family meals at age eight. She still loves to cook. Her childhood was filled with a lot of hard work, but it also had play. There were few toys to be played with, but Erma vividly remembers being given a doll. Erma was told to play inside so that she would be safe. The family did play games together. enjoyed playing dominoes and checkers. Delva, Ermas father, did not allow cards in the house, let alone the playing of cards. He viewed cards as wrong and unethical. Her two younger brothers loved to torment her. Having two brothers made her life very interesting. were always up to mischief. Unfortunately, they were always trying to come up with a new way to scare their older sister. were known to hit the backs of her legs with bull nettles, a strip of a bush that possessed thorns. The nettles caused a burning sensation on the skin. Albert and Emral also liked to chase her with mice. Erma still has a fear of mice to this day. There was a rather traumatic event in her childhood. An evil babysitter was watching Albert, Erma, and Emral one day. Erma accidentally splashed some water on her and the lady responded by repeatedly dunking Erma underwater. This caused permanent hearing damage for Erma. Grace never let that babysitter come back again. All and all, Ermas childhood was good. She learned invaluable skills that she has carried with her through life. Smarts For A Good Start: Erma grew up in a time when your education was not your number one concern. The wellbeing of the family and the status of the farm was your number one concern. Erma found and still finds great joy in learning. She had to walk a mile to catch a bus that would take her to school. Erma went to high school in Car City, Oklahoma. She said the school was comprised of only "whites and indians. She went through the eleventh grade in school. When asked who her favorite teacher was, there was no hesitation in her answer. "Mr. Roper," Erma declared. She said that Mr. Roper was her favorite because he was always nice, fair, and always willing to help you with your school work. Erma found a passion while she was in school. A passion for reading. She loves to read because you learn about so many different things. She loves to read romance and adventure novels. That passion for reading has been unwavering. Just the other day she was reading three books at the same time! Erma truly appreciates her education and encourages all in her family to continue learning. Our Children are True Reflections of Ourselves: "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 10:1 Erma views her children as her greatest accomplishments in life. As mentioned, her first pregnancy ended in miscarriage. Erma knew she had to take care of herself while she was pregnant. She always went to the doctor because she knew good health for her meant good health for her baby. Her first bundle of joy arrived on 1, 1941, Barbara Ann Rose. Her next arrival was Bobby James Rose born on 9, 1947. The final installment was Guindelee Sue Rose born continued... |
