Obituary: Dr. Hobart Hobe Rogers Dr. Hobart Hobe R. Rogers, 77, of Rutherfordton, N.C., entered eternal life on 3, 2014. Born 1, 1937 in Steubenville, Ohio, his wisdom, character and Godly example will be carried on by his family and friends. Dr. Rogers was a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon and had a genuine concern for others and their health and well-being. He completed his undergraduate studies at Michigan State University and went on to attend the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University, where he graduated in 1963. Immediately following, he first completed an internship and then his residency for orthopaedics in 1968 at St. Lukes Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He proudly served his country as a Major in the United States Army in the Medical Corps at Camp Zama, Japan during the Vietnam War before he and his family settled in Rutherfordton, North Carolina in 1971, where He became a part of the Norris Biggs Clinic. He quickly settled into being the only orthopedist in the area at that time, practicing both at Rutherford Hospital as well as at St. Lukes Hospital in Columbus, N.C., where he retired from his practice in 2003. He served on the hospitals board of trustees and served as its chairman, as well the hospitals chief of staff. His contributions to the hospital in these capacities are endless, ranging from physician recruitment to expansion of services. He was also a member of a number of medical associations and was in 2007 named the North Carolina Hospital Association Trustee of the Year. His colleagues remember him for his keen ability to listen and address problems quickly and without qualm. Hobes greatest passion was serving others. When he wasn at the hospital, he spent much of his time volunteering or attending medical mission trips with his wife, Helen. have served others in many countries, including Egypt, Kenya, Honduras, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where he developed a passion for the work done by the Good Samaritan Clinic. He spent his time mending many patients back to health and sharing the unconditional love and word of the Lord Jesus Christ, for many for the very first time. Hobe also helped establish Rutherford s first free medical clinic, served on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity in Rutherford , was a member of the Kiwanis Club and was very active in his church, First United Methodist in Rutherfordton, where fellow members will miss his voice in the choir each morning. Hobe is survived by his wife, Helen V. Rogers, two sons and daughters-in-law: John Mark and Sandra Rogers of North Little Rock, Arkansas, and David and Misty Rogers of Rutherfordton; two daughters and sons-in-law: Susan (Rogers) and Paul Brendemuhl of Nondalton, Alaska, and Carol (Rogers) and Chris Archer of Wiesbaden, Germany. He is also survived by his father, William H. Rogers of Rutherfordton and brother, William Rogers of Sanford, Michigan. Other survivors include his 17 grandchildren and three grandchildren-in-law: Elizabeth (Rogers) and Evan Hamilton, Mary Catherine Rogers, Abigail (Brendemuhl) and Dayton Warren, Deborah (Brendemuhl) and Trey Lance, Callie Archer, Makayla Hodge, Quentin Brendemuhl, Brittany Hodge, Carolina Archer, Anna Brendemuhl, Joshua Brendemuhl, Caleb Brendemuhl, David Brendemuhl, Benjamin Brendemuhl, Maris Rogers, Sarah Brendemuhl and William Rogers. Yet other survivors include numerous coworkers, friends, and church family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marian M. Rogers. Hobe was loved and adored by his family and friends and will be remembered mostly for his wisdom, servant leadership, loving example and encouragement. His grandchildren greatly admired him and will fondly cherish memories of carriage rides, golf cart trips around the farm, camping trips and visits to the hospital gift shop, among many others. But most of all, his family now enjoys, in part because of Hobes character, a genuine appreciation for nature, an honest respect for volunteerism and gratefulness for Godly family values. Hobe loved to drive carriages and could often be found tinkering with his carriage or tending to his two horses that pulled it. He also looked after his flock of sheep and 48 acres on Union Rd. in Rutherford . Hobe was also very musically gifted and played the trumpet and French horn in the Symphony of Rutherford for a number of years. While his presence on earth will be greatly missed, his character, example and quiet disposition will always live in the hearts of those that knew him. The family will receive friends from 12 – 1:30 p.m., , 10, 2014, at a visitation prior to the funeral service in the Fellowship of First United Methodist Church at 264 N. Main St. in Rutherfordton. The funeral service will be immediately following in the sanctuary at 2 p.m. with Reverend Dr. Jack Knoespel and Chaplain (LTC) Christopher Archer, U.S. Army, officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Kistlers Chapel United Methodist Church, 1060 Poors Ford Rd. in Rutherfordton. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials please be directed to the Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1534, Rutherfordton, N.C. 28139, or Good Samaritan Medical Clinic c/o First United Methodist Church of Rutherfordton. Online guestbook can be found at www.mcmahansfuneralhome.com.
