Obituary: James Murray Rawson 10, 1918 - 24, 2013 Our dear father, James Murray Rawson, returned to the presence of his loving Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ, , 24th, following a 10-year battle with Alzheimers. Murray was born 10, 1918, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Edward Cheney and Edith Mary (Adamson) Rawson. He was married in the St. George LDS Temple on 25, 1943, to the love of his life, Anna Gurr of Parowan, Utah, whom he met while both were serving in the Eastern Canadian Mission. Murrays life was dedicated to the service of his fellow men. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps at the battle of Iwo Jima, and upon returning entered into a variety of businesses, being most successful as a partner in Fashion Fabrics, Inc. He consulted with numerous business corporations and was guest lecturer at the BYU Marriott School of Management. He was honored by Brigham Young University as an Honorary Alumnus in 1969. He established the Anna Gurr Rawson Missionary Scholarship Fund at BYU and acted as chair of the Cancer Research Fund Raising Committee for more than 20 years. He retired as Director of the LDS Churchs Promised Valley Playhouse in Salt Lake City, having served on the board for more than 20 years. Murray was a devoted community servant throughout his life, serving as President of Alpine School District for more than 10 years, and was a member of the Kiwanis and Lions Clubs in Utah and Idaho. He served under the direction of Mayor DeLance Squire, assisting in the rewriting of Orem Citys Constitution. He had a great love for Native Americans, working with Tribal Representatives from the Miccosukee, Seminole, Cherokee, and other tribes. He was made an honorary Cherokee in special ceremonies in 2001. He was a devoted servant to the Savior and served the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a Bishop (3 times); Counselor in 2 Stake Presidencies; Mission President 3 times (Florida, Florida South and the Missionary in Salt Lake City); and Missionary Representative and Regional Representative of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Murray also served on the LDS Churchs Missionary Committee for several years. Murray was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna; his parents; his brother, Reed; and sister, Janet Lindsay. He is survived by his brother, William F. Rawson. Murray leaves behind his two sons and two daughters: James Murray Rawson Jr. of Orem, Rebecca (Rawson) Simpson of Henderson, NV, Edith Mary (Rawson) Fillmore of Provo, Utah and Richard Gurr Rawson of Gilbert, AZ; and, 18 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren. Services are under the direction of the Walker Sanderson , 646 East 800 North Orem, with services being held , 2nd at the Orem Utah Sharon Stake , 545 South 800 East, at 11:00 a.m. A Viewing will be held evening between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and just prior to s services from 9:30-10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Worldwide Missionary Fund. |
