Obituary: Leona Belle Rumbaugh, age 94, of A Ewing Estate, AFC, Dewitt formerly of St. Johns and Elsie, MI went home to be with the Lord, , 2, 2014 in DeWitt, Michigan. Services will be held at Smith Family s, St. Johns, MI on , 6, 2014 at 11:00 A.M with Dr. Donald Ferris-McCann officiating. Burial will take place at Ford , Gratiot , MI. Visitation will be held on , 5, 2014 from 5-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Leona was born in St. Johns, Michigan on 4, 1919, the daughter of Leonard and Bessie (Grubaugh) Stockwell. She attended Lamb Country School in St. Johns, Essex School, Central School and graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School, St. Johns, MI. Leona married Elwyn B. Rumbaugh on 9, 1945 in St. Johns, MI. lived on the Rumbaugh Centennial Farm in Bannister, MI for 34 years until Elwyn passed away in of 1979. She then moved to Elsie, MI. Leona worked at Fisher Body in Lansing during WWII. She worked at Redmonds in Owosso and Ithaca for 6 years and retired from ITT Hancock (Lears) after 15 years. Leona did volunteer work; delivering meals on wheels and handing out food to the needy. She was also a reader to the children in the Elsie grade school for several years and a 4-H leader for 6 years. She loved traveling, playing cards, visiting shut-ins, reading, roller skating, and water aerobics. She was a member of Elsie United Methodist Church, Elsie, MI, as well as the UMW, Esther Circle, Elsie Literary Club, Bunco Club, and the Kerr Holiday Travel Club. She was also Mission Chairman at the church she loved. She is survived by her son Larry and Susan Rumbaugh of Nashua, NH, 2 granddaughters; Tricia of Hollis, NH, and Brenda of Nashua, NH, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, sister Ethel and Don Sutliff, 2 brothers; Oscar and Mae Stockwell of St. Johns, MI, and Emerson Kenneth Sr. and Betty Stockwell of St. Johns, MI. Obituary: Esther Alberta Ruman of Brookridge Heights Assisted Living, passed away early , 4, 2015, at the age of 95, under the loving care of family, Brookridge Heights caregivers and Lake Superior Hospice. Esther was born Dec. 9, 1919 to Albert Oliver and Manda Olina Evenson Hinseth at their farm home west of Irene, SD and was baptized Jan. 11, 1920, on her mothers birthday. graduating from high school in Irene, she obtained a one-year teaching certificate from Southern State Teachers at Springfield, SD, after which she taught in rural Prairie and Rex Schools for four years. On May 26, 1944, she married S. Sgt. Edward L. Ruman of Tabor, SD who was in the Marine Corps, and for two years they lived in California where she worked at the Naval Base at Coronado and in a sheet metal distribution warehouse in Orange, CA. Following his discharge, they returned to Springfield where she obtained a State Teaching Certificate and subsequently taught first grade in Lennox, SD for two years. lived in Lennox and Menno, SD, Greeley, CO, Cedar Falls and Newton, IA, and Billings, MT before moving to Marquette, MI in 1963 where she lived until her passing. In 1984, at age 65, Esther graduated with an Associates degree in Business from Northern Michigan University. At the same time, her daughter, Margo, graduated with a Bachelors degree. Esther was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Naomi Circle, University Women, Emeriti group, Assoc. for Retarded Citizens, and for a few years participated in the monitoring program for AIS (Alternate Intermediate Setting) s. Esther was an excellent seamstress. She sewed dresses, outfits and ice show and Halloween costumes for all three daughters. She enjoyed the Norwegian handicraft of rosemaling and embroidery. In her youth, Esther sewed quilts with her Mother on quilt frames at the farm. She cooked delicious meals for family and friends, baked traditional Norwegian cookies at holiday times, ice skated and attended yoga classes with her neighbor, Dorothy H. She supported local Special Olympics. She dappled in calligraphy. She was an avid N.M.U. womens volleyball fan. Esther was a loving Mom who took great care of her family. She will be hugely missed as she was the familys gentle rock. She was patient, benevolent and kind. Since Brookridge had been home to Esther for the past 15 years (longer than any other resident and/or employee), its been said, Brookridge Assisted Living has been built around her. During her earliest years there and while in good health, she took it upon herself to welcome new residents, acted as their tour guide and made sure they felt comfortable. Esthers daughters wish to give a HUGE THANK-YOU to all the Brookridge staff who became friends with and provided wonderful care for Esther all these years and also to Lake Superior Hospice staff who provided great comfort and care, for not only Esther, but for all three daughters. The staffs of both Brookridge and Lake Superior Hospice were more than just caregivers; they became friends and family. Surviving are her three daughters, Jeanne, Margo, and Mary Ruman all of Marquette, Marys partner Robert Meyers; a sister-in-law, Pearl Hinseth of Irene, SD; four nieces and three nephews in SD, one niece in Kansas and several cousins. Preceding her in death were her parents, in 2008 her husband Edward Ruman and her three brothers, Sanford, Wayne, and Merlin Hinseth all of Irene, SD. A memorial service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, , 16th at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Amanda Kossow officiating. A time of fellowship will immediately follow the service in the church Atrium.
