Obituary: Major Willis W. (Jake) Roper was a proud son of not only his parents Willis W. Roper Sr. & Eliza Retherford Roper, but of his community of Roodhouse IL. where he was born 19 , 1923. Jake graduated from high school in May 1941 in a class of 43 students, most of whom had gone to school together their entire lives. Willis Sr. had died two months earlier leaving Eliza widowed with Jake and two younger sisters, Ruth & Sally. graduation he went to Chicago to work with some uncles. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. a brief time, he applied for and was accepted in the Submarine Service. He had been courting Betty when home on leave and convinced her to come to New London, Connecticut so they could be married. were married 11, 1946. Following his discharge in 1946, they returned to their hometown area in Illinois where Jake tried several civilian jobs. In 1949 he realized the military was his true vocation and he enlisted in the Army. refresher basic at Ft. Bliss and now assigned to the artillery branch, he was deployed to Korea in 1950 as a forward observer. There were many fights but one of the fiercest took place in late through 24, 1950. his Lt. and a few other officers were seriously injured or killed he pulled together those who could, to continue to provide cover for those moving to the rear towards the sea, in the frozen valley below. He earned a battlefield commission as an officer for his leadership in that battle. He was one of the proud Chosin Few. a brief tour at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, Jake was ordered to Ft. Kobbe Canal Zone, Panama for 2.5 years. Then to Helena, Montana for another 2.5 years. In 1957 Jake was assigned to the 46th Field Artillery Group being formed at Ft. Sill. It was to be together for five years and tasked with taking the largest missile the U.S. had (the Redstone) to Europe. training together a year, men and families were moved to Germany from 1959-1961 during the building of the Berlin Wall. In 1961 Jake was diagnosed with glaucoma so advanced that it was believed to result in total blindness in five years. He retired 1965 at the age of 42 after 23 years of brave and honorable service to this nation. The family relocated to the Phoenix area (Mesa) where he continued to bowl, shoot pool, play cards, games and serve as President of the owners Association. His death on 30, 2014 left a hole in the family. Stories about him and ones he told provide a great legacy and family heritage. |
