Obituary: Morton - Darlene (Roth) Roth, 78, of Morton died at 7 a.m. , 15, 2015, at UnityPoint -Methodist in Peoria.
She was born in Beaver Crossing, NE on 7, 1936, to Elmer N. and Esther (Martin) Roth.
She is survived by her husband of more than 59 years, Herbert D. Roth. married 2, 1955 at First Mennonite Church of Morton. Other survivors include: two sons Douglas (Donna Eigsti) Roth and Jeff (Donna Davis) Roth and son-in-law Todd Leander, all of Morton. She celebrated the arrival of seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Two brothers also survive: Norman Roth of East Peoria and Gene (Deb) Roth of Morton. She is survived by nieces and nephews and many cousins. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Ruthie Roth. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jill (Roth) Leander, two brothers-in-law, Elton and Donald Roth, and sister-in-law Maxine Roth.
Darlene leaves a rich legacy of love and faith. She accepted Christ as a young girl and let Him direct her paths all the way from a farm in Nebraska to Morton, IL where she met a neighboring farm boy who would become her husband and partner for all the days of her life. Darlene worked for a time at Caterpillar until they welcomed their first son, Doug. She changed careers when her heart called her home to raise her family and help with the family farm business that included farming, trucking and grain operations. She doubled the fun when they welcomed a second son, Jeff. Her nest was completed when her baby girl, Jill, arrived. She enjoyed watching her children grow. She savored being a grandma and loved caring for her grandchildren and being a part of their lives. Her greatest prayer and joy was that her children and grandchildren know the Lord.
Darlene spent her life in service to her family and God. She was a member at First Mennonite and served in many roles for over sixty years. She taught children as a school teacher, an MYF sponsor and a VBS leader investing in their spiritual development. She served far beyond the church walls. She was on the founding board of the Et Cetera Shop in Eureka, IL that serves the needy and raises funds for Mennonite Central Committee. She took her family on service vacations with Mennonite Disaster Service, including Corning, NY after a flood and after a hurricane in Franklin, LA. She served with Habitat for Humanity in Jamaica, MCC in Harlan, KY, and joined a mission trip to Matamoros, Mexico.
She loved gatherings. Camp Menno Haven in Tiskilwa was close to her heart. She and Herb served together and watched it grow. In recent years, she helped decorate a room in the guest house. She was actively involved in Community Bible Study and recognized the value of studying and sharing Gods word. Mennonite Women was a gathering of girls of all ages that she enjoyed monthly. As she matured in faith and in years, she became a mentor for many women who were blessed by her example.
Darlene acted as a caregiver for those around her in need, even when it wasn easy or convenient. She knew Gods word and always tried to do the right thing. As a farm wife, she knew that if you loved and cared for something, it would thrive. This was evident in all that she cared for, from children to plants. One of her greatest pleasures was tending to her flowers and garden.
She loved a house full of people and making memories. She never missed a chance to travel across the USA to visit her many cousins. Her home always had oom in the inn for those passing through. Her favorite gathering was Christmas in Florida - a tradition for her family since the early 1970s. The tradition grew with her family. Darlene was more precious than rubies and greatly treasured by her family and friends. She will be missed.
The visitation will take place at First Mennonite Church in Morton from 4-7 p.m., , 17, 2015. The memorial service will be at 10 a.m., , 18 at First Mennonite Church in Morton with a brief visitation from 9-9:45 a.m. The burial will follow at Pleasant Grove , Tremont, IL.
Knapp-Johnson and Cremation in Morton is handling arrangements.
