Obituary: Mildred (Millie) Ardelia McBrayer Ruland, of Rome, GA, passed away , 3, 2015, at her home, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Ruland was born in Haralson , Georgia, and was the daughter of the late William A. McBrayer, Sr. and Dona L. Vaughan McBrayer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Ruland in 1999. Survivors include a son, Hal M. Ruland (Debbie) and a daughter, Judy R. Roebuck (Dan), both of Rome; four grandchildren, Sydnie Ruland Horton, Seneca, SC, Aubrey Beth Ruland, Denver, CO, Lauren Leigh Smith, Rome, and Benjamin W. Rigas, Rome. Also included are three great-grandchildren; Griffin and Brooks Horton, Seneca, SC, and Poppie Leigh Rigas, Rome. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Mrs. Ruland received her B.S. degree from West Georgia University. Her junior year, Millie was named a Rosenwald Scholar, and awarded full scholarship. She also attended Shorter , and the University of Georgia. She was an active member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers sorority, from 1968 to present, serving in many leadership capacities. Mrs. Ruland was awarded the Marquis Whos Who of America and Whos Who of the World each year from 2002 to 2014. This honor is awarded to distinguished and successful business persons. Upon moving to Rome, she and her husband were members of the First Presbyterian Church where Mr. Ruland was very active in the music ministry. Mr. and Mrs. Ruland then became charter members of Westminster Presbyterian Church where Mr. Ruland served as minister of music. Since 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Ruland were members of First Baptist Church of Rome. She was very active in the Daniels School Class, served on many other committees, including the Prayer Chain Committee for many years. Mrs. Ruland was an educator for 30 years; teaching in Atlanta and Brunswick, Georgia and New London, Connecticut before moving to Rome. She was employed by the Floyd Board of Education teaching at Pepperell Elementary School for 24 years serving hundreds of children in the second grade. She served as grade level chairman for many years and represented her school and county numerous times as a delegate at the Georgia Association of Educators conventions. retiring in 1983, she began working with her brothers at McBrayer Brothers Furniture of Rome, from 1983 to 2005 initially as a sales person and then as manager of all operations. the death of her brothers, Mrs. Ruland worked with her son, Hal Ruland, as he and business partner, Hans VanEikeren, purchased the business and carried on the McBrayer tradition of offering fine furniture to the northwest Georgia area. She thoroughly enjoyed her time meeting new friends, working with her family and helping people decorate and furnish their homes. Her work with McBrayers was recognized with an honorary plaque installed in the Broad Streets streetscape in the second block of Broad Street in front of the former location of McBrayer Brothers Furniture . Above all, Millie loved her family so much, and sacrificially supported and guided them her entire life. Her legacy of selfless love will continue. A funeral service was held at the First Baptist Church of Rome, on , 6, 2015, at 2:30 pm in the sanctuary, with Dr. Floyd F. Roebuck, Dr. Joel Snider, and Rev. Charles Cox officiating. Visitation was held prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:30 at the church. Interment followed at the cemetery at Draketown Baptist Church, Draketown, Georgia. Pallbearers were: Bill Ruland, Tim McBrayer, Joe Robinson, Hans VanEikeren, Bill McBrayer, Jay Matthews, John Thomas Horton, and Ben Rigas. Obituary: Michael Rukes a Newsprint Mechanic a, GA - Michael G. Rukes, 63, went 6, 2011 to join his parents Robert G. Rukes and Elizabeth Long Rukes in heaven. Michael was raised in Shelbyville, Ind. and it was there he met the love of his life and wife of 41 years, Connie. later moved to Florida before calling a their home. Mike was a avid bass fisherman and enjoyed playing golf and Keno daily. He worked at a Newsprint as a mechanic, for 21 years, before retiring in 1999, at which time his family became his main source of entertainment. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his devoted wife, Connie Fuquay; two adoring daughters Pamela (Jon) Scrum; Kelly (Wesley) Schlein, both of a, step daughter Roberta (Fred) Becht of Greensburg, Ind.; a grandson who was the apple of his eye, Jonathan Tylor Scrum; sister and brother - in -law; Diane (Bill) Bland; uncle, Joseph (Margaret) Marte; niece, Grace Lollar; nephew Brad (Janine) Bland; several other family members, dog Sadi and countless friends that he considered family. With his charismatic personality and sharp wit, he never met a stranger, He will be greatly missed by all. Obituary: J. Berkley Ruiz, 1927 to 2015 Berkley Ruiz, 87, passed away 14, 2015 from natural causes. Berk was born and raised in North Carolina but had lived in Winder since 1957. He served in the Navy (WWII, Korean War) and remained in the Naval Reserve until 1976, retiring as Lieutenant Commander. He obtained degrees from Mars Hill Junior , Clemson University, the University of Georgia, and a specialist degree from Georgia Southern. He taught Industrial Arts for two years in North Carolina then in Georgia from 1957 to 1988, most of those years at Winder-Barrow High School (1957 – 1968, 1976 - 1988). He was instrumental in the formation of the Industrial Arts Club Association in 1962. Berk was active in the community of Winder. He assisted with Boy Scouts, was a member of the Lions Club and the Dixie Locksmith Association, he took tickets at high school football and basketball games, and for many years was the only locksmith in town. He was also a licensed ham radio operator for over 40 years. During retirement he started a full-time locksmith business and picked up the art of dowsing (appearing on the show Liars and Legends). He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Winder Ward) and served in various capacities including a 2-year mission to Samoa with his wife Shirley and then as bishop from 1999 to 2004. His religion was an important part of his life and he gave countless hours of service on behalf of others. Berk met Shirley in 1954 while selling pots and pans door-to-door in North Carolina. eventually settled in Winder where they both taught high school. All seven of their children attended that same high school. Berk was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years and is survived by their children: Juli, Teresa, Tony, Robby (Genie), Timmy (Ruth Yaneth), John (Darla) and Molly, as well as 12 grand-children, one great-grand-child, and one brother (Robert Ruiz of North Carolina). Berk was a family man who spent summers hauling the kids to different parts of the country and his retirement years enjoying the grandkids. His jokes and hearty laughter and ever-present willingness to help others will be sorely missed by the family and all who associated with him. Viewings will be held at the Carter on and , 19 and 20, from 5pm to 8pm. services will be held , 21 at noon in the LDS chapel (36 Sims Road). A short viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 11:00 to 11:45. Interment will be in the Rose Hill . Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America. |
