Obituary: Mrs. Betsy Jeanne Rix (Maahs), age 53 of Marietta, GA passed away 12, 2011. She was born in Milwaukee, WI to Elgardt and Georgianne Maahs of Hartford, WI. Betsy graduated from Hartford Union High School in 1976, and was an accomplished swimmer who qualified for the state championship all four years. Betsy went on to the University of Wisconsin, Madison and earned her Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering. During her professional career she worked for Emerson Electric, Lockheed Missiles and Space, and the Kenan Research at the Atlanta History . She also loved cooking, quilting, golf and tennis. Betsy is survived by her husband of 29 years Glenn Rix, son Jonathan Rix, 2nd Lt USMC, parents Elgardt (Bud) and Georgianne, sisters Sally Maahs and Susan (Michael) Allen, nephews Scott (Danielle) Kwaterski and Stephen (Laura) Kwaterski and niece Kathryn Allen. The family will receive friends on , 21 from 5:00-7:00pm at H.M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill, Marietta, GA. A memorial service will follow at 7:00pm. Betsys remains will be interred in Hartford, WI during a private family ceremony at a later date. Obituary: Timothy Ray Rivers, 45, of Cottage Walk, Cartersville, Georgia, died peacefully 10, 2011 at his sisters residence following a 3 ½ year battle with esophageal cancer. Mr. Rivers was born 18, 1965, the son of Millard R. Rivers and Dorothy Pence Rivers and was a member of Rowland Springs Baptist Church. He graduated from Highlands High School in Natrona Heights, Pa., and West Virginia Tech in Montgomery, West Virginia as a Civil Engineer PE Certified in 21 state, employed at Paulson-Mitchell Engineering in Roswell, Georgia. He was a huge Nascar and Dale Earnhardt fan, had his Pilots license at age 16 and loved traveling in his motor home and riding his Harley. Surviving are his children, Cymber Pettyjohn and Timothy T. Rivers of Cartersville, grandchild, Zoey Pettyjohn, mother, Dorothy Rivers of Cartersville, father, Millard R. Rivers of Kittanning, Pa., sister and brother in law, Sue Haas and Dave Carnes of Cartersville, step sister, Merissa Rivers and step brother, Justin Rivers, both of Kittanning, Pa. A special thanks from the family to Transitions Hospice for the exceptional care he was given. The family will receive friends at Owen afternoon from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Mr. Rivers will be transported to Northcutt & Son for s, Inc., in Morehead, Kentucky where the family will receive friends on evening from 4:00-8:00p.m. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. in Bowen Chapel , Olive Hill, Kentucky. Obituary: Mrs. Shirley Eunice Rivers of Atlanta, GA died peacefully on 22, 2014 in her residence at Canterbury Court. Mrs. Rivers was born in Sutterheim, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Her parents, Kenneth Warner Wright and Queenie Margaret Wright, were both third generation settlers of British ancestry. She grew up on her father’s sheep ranch. At age ten she went to Collegiate Girls School in Port Elizabeth, Cape Province. matriculating, Mrs. Rivers attended Cape Town University. three years she graduated with a BSC degree with Bacteriology as her major. This enabled her to work as a medical technician in Clinical Laboratories associated with hospitals in Port Elizabeth and later in Durban, Natal Province, South Africa. In 1965 she moved to the Durban Research Laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. In 1962 Shirley Rivers graduated with a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Cape Town. In 1964 she was awarded a United States Doctoral Public Service Fellowship which she held at the s for Disease Control in Atlanta. At the completion of her fellowship she returned to her post at the CSIR in Durban. In 1965 she came to Atlanta to marry Joseph Carter Christopher of Atlanta. He died in 1979. She held a Visiting Fellow and Visiting Scientist positions in the Division at s for Disease until she very proudly became a United States citizen in 1970. She then became a federal employee. Shirley Rivers’ work was mainly directed to the human immune responses to the parasitic diseases of amebiasis and schistosomiasis. Not only did she enjoy her experimental studies but also the contact with the many foreign visitors to the Parasitology Division at CDC. She retired in 1988 and directed some of her energies to volunteer work. In 1992 she married Wayne Kirby Rivers Jr. of Atlanta. Latent melanoma resurged and caused his death in 1995. Shirley Rivers moved to Canterbury Court in 1997 where she found volunteer work without even getting into her car. She is survived by her sister, Madeline Kate Mager, a niece and a nephew, all in South Africa, and a niece in London. In the USA she is survived by sister-in-law Evelyn Rivers Wilbanks. She also felt extremely close to her American Family in Atlanta which she acquired through both her marriages. This family is headed by Elizabeth Rivers Trulock and the now deceased Frances Rivers Ringl. A memorial service will be held on , 10, 2015, at 2:00 PM, at H. M. Patterson & Son - Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Rd, Atlanta, GA., with a reception immediately following the service at Canterbury Court, 3750 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, GA 30319. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Canterbury Court. |
