Obituary: Steven Robert Ray, 59, of Roswell passed with his loved ones by his side early in the morning of 16, 2017. He was a beloved husband for over 35 years, a father to two children, a caring son and brother, a supportive uncle, and a friend to everyone. He was known to many as the Good Guy. Born in Rhode Island, he moved to Atlanta at the age of 2 where he was raised in Mableton. He was an avid athlete at Pebblebrook High and continued to run cross country at Southern Tech for 2 years. Steve spent the summers of his youth working at Six Flags Over Georgia where he met his wife. He transferred to Georgia Tech where he earned a BS in Architecture in 1981 and a Masters in Architecture in 1983. He worked 34 years at Summer Associates, Barker Cunningham Barrington, and Steve Ray Architect LLC, all of where he worked in his true passion of hand-designing buildings. As an architect, he loved to design buildings where he was free to be creative and unique to bring life to each space within his projects. He designed homes as well as additions and renovations for residential and some educational buildings. He designed over 150 churches throughout Georgia and Florida and enjoyed complicated historical restoration projects of courthouses and churches. He believed God gave him the ability to draw and by designing churches, he was doing the Lords work. He truly loved to draw. He believed in family, where he coached various sports for his two children and made a point to have family dinner almost every night. He never missed a football or soccer game, even if it meant travelling across the country overnight. He was a Royal Ambassador Leader since the early 90s and stayed involved until recently. He broke the gender barrier for wooden derby car racing by involving the girls in the all-boys RA racer event. He always believed in giving to his community. In addition to the RAs, he was on the board for Foster Support Foundation, ran the youth basketball program at First Baptist Roswell, and was dedicated to the Appalachian Outreach. s in the fall, you could find him with his family at Bobby Dodd Stadium as a loyal fan to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. With any spare time he managed to find, he enjoyed playing tennis and was an avid runner. He believed all problems in life could be solved with a Long, Slow, and Distance run. He loved his church, First Baptist Church of Roswell, where he was a devoted member, long time Deacon, a keeper of the buildings, and a facilities manager. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; children Michele & Michael; Parents Dot & Jimmy Ray, Brother, Scott Ray(Mary); Mother in Law, Gisele Cook; Brother in Law, JP Cook; so many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and friends that he made feel like they were close family. Visitation will be at the Roswell home on 19, 2017 from 2-6. The funeral service will be at First Baptist Church Roswell in the Sanctuary on 20, 2017 at 2 PM. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Building Fund of First Baptist Roswell. |
