Obituary: Jean Rogers was born 10, 1926 in Eupora Mississippi and grew up in Boyle Mississippi. She graduated from Boyle High School and completed her education at Millsaps in Jackson Mississippi. During the Korean War Jean was one of a few women who served in the Red Cross in Korea during 1952-1954. There she coordinated entertainment programs and cared for injured soldiers on the front lines. At night Jean often carried left over food from the mess halls into town in a Jeep driven by her assigned Sergeant to feed children in the severely depressed intercity. Her General found out about her night work and said it was against the rules, but Jean convinced him to let her continue to help those in need. As a Red Cross representative, she hosted many entertainers and her favorite was Bing Crosby. the Korean War she transferred to the Pensacola Naval Hospital to serve veterans of the war in recovery. Jean later obtained her teaching certificate for Florida and taught 3rd thru 6th grade at Pleasant Grove Elementary School for more than 30 years. She taught all her students knowledge, discipline, respect and responsibility. Jean married Joseph Rogers Jr. and they restored a historic home on the Perdido Bay waterfront. Jean was an avid skier and boat operator and she taught many children and teens to water ski during their time at their waterfront home. Jean and Joe were members of the Methodist Church and she was a member of the Rainbow of the Masons. All of her active life, Jean was a care giver. While living in retirement at the Veranda, she knew all the residents names and provided assistance when needed. Later she moved to Sabal House where she became the receiver of care something she was not accustomed to. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Rogers, Jr.; her parents George W. Boozer, Sr. and Mary E. Boozer; her brothers and their wives George W. Boozer, Jr. and Vermelle S. Boozer; James C. Boozer and Roz Boozer; and Robert G. Boozer and Denolis B. Boozer; 2 infant sisters; and three nieces, Jacqueline F. Jackson, Betty J. Cummings, and Gayle L. Boozer; and her brother in law, William L. Jackson, Jr. Jean is survived by her sister, Mary Boozer Jackson of Baton Rouge, and Marys children and their families - Mary Margaret and Johnny Little of Houston; Sally and Ronald Dodd of Jackson, MS; Stanley Butch Cummings of Latimer, MS; Susan and Charles Longacre of Baton Rouge; and William L. Jackson, III and Janet Morris of Humble, TX; and Cathy Jo Jackson of Greensboro, NC. She is also survived by her nieces and their families Barbara and Jeff Novak and Sharon and Charles Morris of Jacksonville, FL and her nephew, Chris Boozer. Also Josephs three children Leonard, Melisa and Elaine. Jean is remembered by her longtime friends, Phyllis and Ken Baker, and Cheri and Jack Sparks, and her many friends in Pensacola. A visitation will take place on , 3, 2015 from 10-11 AM at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens & , 1985 W. Nine Mile Rd, Pensacola, FL. A Celebration of Life will begin at 11 AM. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Barrancas National . |
