Obituary: Gladys May Richards Gladys May Davis was born in a small town call Morse in Clarendon, Jamaica on 11th, 1916 to Roslyn Reid and Adolphus Davis. Shortly after her birth, her father, seeking to improve his young family's future responded to the call for workers to migrate to Panama to work on the now world famous Panama Canal. Unfortunately, without the benefits of the easily accessible modes of communication we now enjoy; cell phones, texting, and even Facebook, contact was quickly lost and the family never discovered what happened to him, but we hold a sense of pride that he, like many of our ancestors, contributed to the building of what is now visited by millions and is viewed as a masterpiece. When she was twelve, her mother died leaving her in the care of her maternal grandmother who Gladys lovingly referred to as Aunty Mother. Many people born in the Caribbean can relate to such terms of endearment. Aunty Mother was the village midwife who, without formal education or the benefit of epidurals, hospitals and all the trappings we have now become accustomed to, safely delivered thousands of babies in their village. Gladys met and fell in love with Joseph Samuel Richards and the two got married 8th, 1939. their marriage they moved to the Parrish of St. Catherine to live in a small village called Cut where Sam's large extended family lived. Sam was the eldest of 12, so it was a large and supportive community. Neither Sam nor Gladys had the opportunity to finish high school, yet their business acumen, ambition and drive led them to take the skills they developed from their life experiences, and with five children answered the call for workers to move to "Great Britain" thousands of miles away from their family, still no cell phones, texts or Facebook. Do you recognize a pattern? First Panama, now Great Britain, our ancestors are fearless and driven, that strength is embedded in our DNA. Sam moved to London first, after he secured a job with the gas company and a place to live, Gladys joined him. Gladys got a job as a ticket collector with the London train service and together they saved enough to bring their children Jean, Norma, Dorett, Winston and Jacqueline from Jamaica to join them, and with their youngest child, Marcia, who was born in England, the couple finally had their family intact. The journey to England was always about seeking better opportunities for financial security and the couple always planned to "go back home" a goal they achieved in the mid 60's , but the travel bug was still there so they left Jamaica and moved to New York, later settling in Palm Bay, Florida. Within a couple of years of living in Florida, three of their six children joined them. Gladys was the glue that kept the family connected across continents and time zones. She and Sam are our quiet heroes. Community has been important in every phase of this couples lives. Friends who we call family though not connected by blood, the Gordon family who they met in England in the 50's and have never lost touch with is an example of everlasting friendship. Sister Demitt who took them to Net 96, the crusade held by Pastor Finley from 3ABN where they re-baptized into the Seventh Day Adventist faith and Aunt Cynthia, sister, sister-in-law and friend, helped bring them into the Palm Bay Seventh Day Adventist Church which became their anchor. Gladys was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a great great grandmother, aunt and a friend and confident to many. She loved God and her faith was her constant strength. She was not perfect but she was perfect for us. She was never afraid of dying, she knew the joy and peace that awaited her but she always worried about her family and those she loved. To honor her memory let each and every one of us agree to live a life of grace, loving God and making her proud. |

Obituary: Frederick Nicholas Richards, 48, a loving husband, father, brother and friend of Miami, passed away , 29, 2015. He was born on 24, 1966, in Georgetown, Guyana, to parents, Frederick P. Richards and Gloria H. Richards. A proud US Army veteran. Frederick loved spending time with his family, enjoyed traveling, loved to shop and knew how to keep his wife happy and proud. He will always be remembered for his good sense of humor, humbleness and great personality but most of all for the love he showed to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 6 years, Sabrina Dean Richards; his loving children, Christopher Richards, Sidrena Ruth, Michael Murray, Sikera Murray; father, Frederick P.
