Obituary: Melvin W. Rector, 94, of Barefoot Bay, FL, went home to be with the Lord on May 6, 2016. He was born on a farm in the town of Florida, Montgomery N.Y. 26th 1922. At the age of 6 months his parents moved to Johnstown N.Y. where he later began Attending schools and finally graduating from Johnstown High School. He found employment with the Borman's Garment Manufacturing Co. until 1942 at which time He moved to Baltimore Md. and became employed at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Co. as an electrician on aircraft. While in Baltimore he married Vinah Maclntyre on 8th 1942. She was born and grew up in Bristol Vt. She moved to Johnstown N.Y. and was employed as a waitress in a local restaurant and that is how they met. He was inducted into the army in 1943 and was assigned to the Army Air Corp. He took Basic Training in Greensboro, N.C. and then was sent to radio school in Sioux Falls, S.D. .From there he went to gunnery school in Yuma AZ. finishing gunnery school he had a short leave at home and then on to crew training at Mc Dill Air Base in Tampa FL. On 23'' 1945 his first daughter was born just as he was about to ship out to Savannah., Ga. where the crew was assigned to a brand new B 1 7G aircraft and flew this plane to Bangor, Me, Goose Bay Labrador, BW1 Greenland, Iceland and then to England where he would be stationed at Snetterton, Heath for the duration of the war in Europe. a short period of formation flight training he flew his first combat mission to Kid Germany and then seven more combat missions before VE Day. He was a radio operator gunner on B 17's and attained the rank of T/Sgt until his discharge. He flew two food drop Missions to Holland after the war to the starving Dutch people. His group was supposed to move to a base in Germany for occupation and that was scrubbed then the group was going to fly back to the USA and that didn't happen. a few months of uncertainty the base started to close and some went home and the ones without enough point were sent to France for reassignment to a troop carrier group in Munich, Germany. When he arrived in Munich they told him that they didn't need him so a month later he was sent back to France and was assigned to the troop carrier at Villacoublay, Air Base outside Paris. He was in Paris for Christmas and New Years and early in he went to Antwerp Belgium and boarded the liberty ship Joel Chandler Harris for the USA. Twenty one days later he landed in Staten Island and Fort Dix, N.J. where he was honorably discharged from the Army of the United States on 9th 1946 with the rank of T/Sgt. being discharged he enlisted in the Army Reserves and stayed in the reserves obtaining the rank of M/Sgt before being honorably discharged on 5 1952 his discharge from the Army he came home to his wife and daughter in Johnstown N.Y. He got a job as a machinist at DH&P a local co. and remained there until 1947 Then he was hired as a machine operator at General Electric Co. in Schenectady N.Y. where he continued as a machine operator for quite a while before becoming a setup man and later an instructor and finally as foreman for his last ten years at G.E. retiring in 1986. During this time he was blessed with four more daughters and one son. In 1980 he divorced Vinah Rector and Married Danica Hladik who also worked at G.E. were together for 15 years before she passed away on 22 1995. His second born daughter Susan's husband died in 1995 and she was going to a grieving facility in Schenectady N.Y. where she had become friends with another lady who was also attending these meetings whose husband also died in 1995. Melvin had been going out to dinner with Susan , a cousin who was also a widow and an aunt also a widow. One week Susan asked if she could bring another lady friend to dinner. This was the beginning of a friend ship and later courtship. This relationship turned out to be very serious and after about two years, he married Louise Catherine Morehouse - Heintze on 20, 1998. She had four daughters and one son so now the two of them had eleven children between them. had a very happy 16 years of marriage. spent quite a lot of time with their children and a lot of time traveling before Louise had a hip revision surgery that did not turn out well and she passed away 8, 2014. Melvin went through the mourning period again but now he had her children as well as his own to help him through this time. Melvins Memorial Service was held 10, 2016, at the First Baptist Church of Barefoot Bay, FL. Another service will be held at a later date at the Reformed church in Johnstown N.Y. with final burial in Ferdale , also in Johnstown N.Y. He is survived by his children: Sandra Vavruick, Susan Hayes, Thomas Rector, Nancy Waddington, Diane Henderson, Kathryn Wren, step children: Gail Scarano, Linda Heinrze, Darlene O'Donnell, Dawn Friello, Garth Heintze; grandchildren Barbara Villa, Joseph Vavruiclç Christine Matte, Debra Clack, Bradley Rector, Michael Rector, Charles B. Waddington, David Henderson, Daniel Henderson, Hugh Henderson, Christopher Wren, Michael Wren; step grandchildren, Tracy Young, Fred Scarano, Chrisopher Scarano, Michael Scarano, Jenipher Badalucco, John O'Donnell, and 23 Great Grandchildren. |
