Obituary: Frederick A. Radebach passed away peacefully on , 6, 2010 at home surrounded by family. He was born in Stuart on 30, 1967 and was a lifetime resident of Martin . Fred is survived by his loving wife Jodyann, stepsons Louis and Shaun Vipperman, parents Fred and Barbara Radebach, brother and sister- in-law, Dave and Michelle Radebach, niece Kaelyn Radebach, nephew Zachary Radebach, Aunt Delores Schommer, all of Jensen Beach; his maternal grandmother, Doris Rowe of Bushnell and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He graduated from South Fork High School in 1986, and attended several proms, the senior trip, and many other trips with the assistance of friends and family. He was always the planner and organizer. He was a victim of muscular dystrophy, but it never slowed him down. He loved music, concerts, and the Florida Keys, and had a keen interest in science and outer space. Fred was fun loving, kind and generous and never met a stranger. He had a multitude of friends and will be sorely missed. He was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Services will be held on , 16, 2010 at Aycock in Jensen Beach. A Gathering of friends will begin at 1:00 PM, with a service to follow at 2:00 PM. MARTIN COUNTY - In a hospital room on the banks of the St. Lucie River, a 41-year-old man was fighting for his life last week. Muscular dystrophy, which robbed Fred Radebach of the ability to walk decades ago, was taking its toll through congestive heart failure. His chances didn look good. So, as often happens when the end of life is near, his thoughts turned to what matters most: loved ones, family. He decided to stop putting off what he knew he wanted. He asked his girlfriend, Jody, to marry him On Sept. 30, the pair exchanged vows in Room 517 at Martin Memorial Medical . The bride wore a long, Egyptian-..inspired white dress. The groom wore a short-sleeved shirt embellished with red and gold dragons. celebrated with key lime pie - Freds favorite, and one of the few things he could swallow in his weakened state. I told her we were always going to get married. I was just dragging my feet**, said Fred, a Jensen Beach resident. The very next day, five hospital rooms away from the Radebachs, another couple had the same idea. Kevin Hobson, a 50-year-old union electrician with stage 4 lung cancer, decided it was time to marry his girlfriend, Michelle. He had been grappling with cancer for two years, and he always believed he would wed Michelle - but later, when he was healthy. Last week, with his vocal chords paralyzed and the pain of the cancer intensifying, the couple knew it was time. So on Oct. 1, they exchanged vows in Room 512 at Martin Memorial. The bride didn get dressed up. She had been sleeping in hospital rooms for a month straight - and Kevin doesn like a fuss anyway. The fifth-floor nurses provided flowers and cake. Clerk of Court Marsha Ewing performed the short ceremony. Because Kevin couldn speak, he mouthed the words, I do, Ewing recalled. It was a brief moment of joy during an otherwise trying period. Its nice to have some happiness on the floor, said Kerry Cave, the fifth-floor nursing director, who witnessed the Hobsons wedding. Cave has seen hospital-room weddings before - but two in one week is extremely rare, she said. The similarities between the Radebachs and the Hobsons - who don know each other - go beyond the circumstances of their vows. Both women described their husbands as fighters who refused to let their respective diseases beat them down. In the four years she has known Fred, Jody has never resented her caretaker role. Yes, she has to lift him from his wheelchair on a regular basis - but she counts herself as lucky that shes strong enough to do it. Ive never felt burdened, she said. Every time I pick him up out of his chair, I get to put my arms around him. Fred left the hospital and was making encouraging progress at home. But the Radebachs long-term future still progresses 24 hours at a time. In the face of death, both couples managed to strengthen their love for each other. All four individuals found a silver lining in the endurance of their life partner. Jody put it this way: We e all going to die, and Im fortunate enough that I get to share his last moments. Fred and I shared 3 glorious months as husband and wife. It is now I reach out to all who read this to please join me in celebrating Freds life. On 6, 2010, 4 years to the day of meeting my earth angel, Fred drew his last breath. Yes, I am sad - a sadness so deep in the dark hours of morning when all are sleeping - I feel empty.
