Obituary: Richard Godfrey Quirion 1932 - 2016 Waterville - Richard Godfrey Quirion, 83, of Oakland passed away peacefully on , 1 2016 at Mount St. Joseph in Waterville. He was born on 12, 1932 in Waterville, Maine, the son of Aimee and Annunciade (later Mercier) Quirion. He was educated and lived in the a and Waterville areas for much of his life. He enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean War, where he saw active duty. Post-war, he worked nearly his entire career for the US Postal Service (USPS) starting as a clerk in Waterville and finishing his career as Postmaster in Coopers Mills, from where he retired in 1987. He was President of the National League of Postmasters in the later years while working for the USPS. Shortly after retiring from the Postal Service, he and his wife Gertrude moved to Pinellas Park, Florida where they lived nearly 20 years, until Gertrude passed away in 2008. Richard held the elected post of Vice President of the private community where he lived in Pinellas Park, working on community improvement and outreach programs for elderly and chronically ill residents. He returned to Maine in the summer of 2008 (shortly after Gertrude passed away) to be closer to his remaining family. Richard was a highly active member of the community in every place that he lived, working in both public and private community groups and in his church. He was on the Parish Council at St John the Baptist, Winslow. More recently he was a communicant of Notre Dame Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Elks Club. By far his most passionate pursuit was Barbershop singing. He was a very active member of the Waterville chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA). He sang in various quartets throughout his life as well as the Waterville chorus. Singing was a pastime that gave him endless pleasure, one that he shared with all who cared to listen. Richard is survived by his 2 sisters - Jean Christie of Oakland (with whom Richard lived until shortly before his death) and Joan Griggs and her husband Charlie of Hartford Connecticut - and his step-sister Shirley Mcquillan and her husband John of Winslow. Richard is also survived by his 4 children: Cheryl Quirion and her partner Walter Jaurena of Buenos Aires, Argentina; Keith Quirion and his wife Sara of Belgrade Lakes; Anne Quirion and her partner Roland Follensbee of Enfield, New Hampshire; and his chosen daughter Shirley Gorman and her husband Ray of Saint John, New Brunswick (Canada). His son Paul died in a tragic car accident in 2008. Richard was the proud and loving grandfather to Keith and Sara's children: Valerie, Kimberleigh, Sean and Sydney; Shirley and Ray's children: Sean and his wife Lois, Meghan and her husband Tom, and Kathryn and her husband José. He was the beloved great-grandfather to Sarah, Jenna, Olivia, Christopher, Ileana, and Mateo. We will miss his smile, his jokes, his quick wit, his distinctive laugh and his beautiful singing voice. May you rest in peace. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on , 9, 2016, at 9:00 AM at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 112 Silver Street in Waterville. A reception place will be announced at church. His burial will be in the spring at the Maine Veterans Memorial in a. Obituary: WATERVILLE \ Julie Jean Quirion, 92, died peacefully on , 5, 2014 at the Inland Hospital Emergency Room, surrounded by her family. She was born on 21, 1922 in Derby, Connecticut (CT), one of eleven children, born to Polish immigrants, Joseph and Catherine Rydzy. Julie graduated from St. Michael's Catholic School and Derby High School in Derby, CT. She became a Registered Nurse after graduating from St. Francis Hospital School of in Hartford CT. She met her future husband, Joseph Florian Quirion, during her studies at St. Francis Hospital. One of Julie's most vivid memories of her nursing career was caring for victims of the 1944 circus fire in Hartford CT, which was one of the worst fire disasters in US history. In 1948, Julie and Joe were married in CT, honeymooned in Cuba, and moved to Maine where she worked as an RN at a Waterville hospital. Julie and Joseph owned and operated Quirion Housekeeping Camps on McGrath Pond for over 30 years. The camps were a gathering place for family and guests often returned each year and became part of the their extended family. As the unofficial camp social director, she helped create friendships that remain to this day. Summer days were filled with boating, swimming, water skiing and always lots of children, dogs, and small animals running about. She had a generous spirit and often helped people in need, even strangers. In later years, one of Julie's greatest joys was caring for her two grandchildren on weekends while her daughter worked in Boston. A proud grandmother, she encouraged, supported and guided her grandchildrens' spiritual, educational, and athletic endeavors. She lived to see her grandchildren graduate from MIT and Cornell University and go on to attend graduate school. Julie was a member of Corpus Christi Parish, attended St. John the Baptist Church and the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. She supported the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, St. John School, St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, and Food for the Poor. Her faith, family, and friends were always the focus of her life. Julie was predeceased by her parents and nine brothers and sisters and has one surviving sister, Josephine Sadlon of West Haven, CT. Also surviving are: her loving husband of 65 years Joseph F. Quirion, her three children; twins, Kathleen and Kenneth Quirion, and Joseph P. Quirion, all of Winslow, and her two grandchildren, William Fedus of San Diego, CA and Kathryn Fedus of New York City, NY. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Tim Webb and all of the people who helped care for Julie at the local hospitals and extended care facilities. We especially appreciate the caregivers who made it possible for her to remain at home during her last years. She loved and considered them as family. For those who wish, donations may be made in Julies memory to St. John's Catholic School in Winslow or Food for the Poor Headquarters, 6401 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek FL 33073 www.foodforthepoor.org or St. John Regional Catholic School 15 South Garand St. Winslow, ME 04901 |
