Obituary: The loss of a legendary dancer, going home for eternity. Mrs. Doris Pabon-Velez of Norwich and Oakdale peacefully passed away on , 16 of a long progressive illness. She was born on 9, 1925 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. She is survived by her son Luis Velez Pabon of Jewett City, her daughter Elsie Velez of Cromwell and son Genaro Velez Pabon, Jr. of Oakdale. Grandchildren Julie Speight-Harty of Longmeadow, MA, Genaro Velez, III of Old Saybrook, Alexander and Kristien Velez of Naples, FL. Great-Grandchildren Matthew Harty, Brendan Harty and Elijah Velez. She also leaves behind sons-in-law Harlen Gay and Stanley Boyes, and Grandson-in-law Joseph Harty. Doris is survived by her sister Carmen Pabon-Soto of Norwich, nephew o (Kiko) Pabon of Norwich, nieces; Mildred (Cuca) Pabon of Mayaguez, PR, Jessie Rivera, and Yvette Soto both of Norwich. Doris was born and raised in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico The Island of Enchantment. She grew up as a city girl and it was her dream to be a dancer. She was the daughter of two beautiful parents Maria Luisa Coto and Vincente Pabon who loved and supported her dreams. In her younger years she became a professional dancer, developing her skills and techniques making La Rumba in her own unique style. She graduated from school, a very intelligent young lady with special gifts and devoted her time to dancing, acting and theater. She was very popular and well known, making dancing her life career. At the age of 16 she became well known around the Island for her sophisticated Rumba, Cha-cha-cha, Merengue and many more styles of dance. She was a beautiful, gorgeous, glamorous woman known in the dance world as La Rumbera Mayaguezana. As a young lady she entered any and all dancing competitions across the Island, earning top cash prizes and a following of people who just came to see her dance. She grew up from a middle class family to an affluent family of her own. During this time in her career she received contracts to dance in television, theaters, carnivals and special government gatherings. A beautiful Latin woman with cinnamon color skin, big brown eyes, lustrous black hair and a gorgeous smile, she spoke with a soft gentle voice with class and style. Known for her colorful dancing outfits, that were hand-sewn by her mother stitch-by-stitch, with sequins and sparkle, her outfits would light up the room as she entered, with colorful ruffles that followed and moved with her body as she danced and swayed to the music. She performed along side well-known Latino comedians and actors, such as Cantinflas and Pedro Infante. During the war she was contracted by the United States Military to perform with the United Service Organization, which provided live entertainment, programs and services to military troops and families. Doris traveled to military bases across the Island dancing for the troops entertainment. She was married in 1946 to Luis Velez and upon his death she remarried to Staff Sageant Genaro Velez Ramirez, retired U.S. Army and former politician of Mayaguez. In the mid-60s Doris and her two youngest children relocated to Norwich to join with her eldest son, Luis Pabon who had established a home and business here. Making them one of the first Puerto Rican families in Norwich, Connecticut. She was a loving, caring, responsible mother who worked very hard to provide the best for her children, never asking anyone for any help, she did it all on her own. A humble person with a soft heart, strong character and a big smile, she worked at the Backus Hospital for 15 years, and retired from King-Seeley Thermos in Norwich after 21 years. Raised Catholic, Doris believed in the greater power of God and found worship no matter what church she attended. retiring she spent her later years being just a mother to her family. She loved shopping, watching her favorite TV shows, cooking her traditional Puerto Rican rice with gandules, pork and pasteles con carne and many other family favorites. She was a woman with lots of energy and fun to be around. A little daredevil at times, she was known to try anything once, even riding carnival rides and a spin on a motorcycle. She could light up a party with her singing and dancing. During the 90s she came out of retirement to enter the Ocean Beach Park Senior Citizens dancing competition and won first prize! She was a proud Puerto Rican American. Doris will be laid to rest in her hometown at the family mausoleum in the Mayaguez Memorial . Arraignments are under the direction Thomas L. Obituary: Doris L. Paar, age, 91 , of Niantic, passed away on , 15, 2015 at Bride Brook and Rehab in Niantic, CT. She was born on 26, 1923 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Arthur and Rose (Demers) Lantaigne. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Charles N. Paar, whom she married on 27, 1946 in San Diego, California. She is also survived by two sons, Henry Paar of Niantic, CT., Thomas Paar of Arlington, VA.; two daughters, Carol Bergeron of Fairport, NY and Beverly Newburgh of Waterford, CT; two sisters, Aurore Kowil of Chicopee, MA.and Teresa Cocchi; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on , ( 21st) at 11 AM at St. Agnes Church, 10 Haigh Avenue, Niantic. Interment will be private. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9:30-10:15 AM on at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons , 48 Grand Street, Niantic, CT. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Bride Brook for all the kindness that they extended to both Doris and her family.
