Obituary: Sam was born in simple, small town outside of Bari, Italy on 4th 1928, and was brought to the United States as a small child. He graduated from Franklin High School in Los Angeles in 1947, and settled in Glendale, California with his wife of 61 years, Brigida, and their three sons, Dominic, Vito, and Sam. Sam and his brother-in-law, George, took over Pontrelli & Laricchia and began manufacturing Italian sausage and distributing Italian foods to restaurants and delis throughout the Southern California area. During his retirement, Sam was very active with various organizations in the Italian-American community and in volunteering with the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Sam died on 5, 2014 at Villa Scalabrini Italian after battling a long-lasting illness, and is survived by his wife, Brigida, his three sons, two daughters-in-law, and five grandchildren. Sam was born in Bari, Italy on 4th, 1928. At the age of two, he, his mother, and his sister emigrated to the United States to join his father who had previously left for the US in search of better opportunities in Southern California. While making his way through Elise Island, his name was changed from Saverio to Sam by immigration officials. graduating high school, Sam was drafted into the army to fight in the Korean War. Luckily, Sam was stationed in Germany where he was a chef and rose to the rank of Sargent. his time in the army, he traveled throughout Europe before returning to the United States. Upon returning home, he met his future wife, Brigida, at his Welcome- party and they were married six months later. Sam’s father, Domenico, started a small butcher shop that specialized in making its own Italian Sausage. Upon Domenico’s retirement, Sam and his brother-in-law, George, expanded the small meat market into a multi-million dollar a year business, specializing in manufacturing the famous Italian Sausage recipe that was crafted by his father, but now also servicing restaurants and delis in the Southern California area. Sam and Brigida settled in Glendale with their sons Dominic, Vito, and Sam. Family life with Sam was always simple; he participated in the Boy Scouts with his sons, and enjoyed taking them deep sea fishing and to the local dodger games. In his retirement, Sam enjoyed volunteering at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles where he worked in the play room and played games with the children to cheer them up. Sam volunteered at the hospital for over 15 years until his Parkinson’s disease made it too tough for him to continue. Sam will be missed dearly by his family and friends as everyone agrees that he was one of the warmest and kindest people they’ve ever known. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be sent to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, an organization that is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensure the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today. |
