Obituary: Seeing is believing. For many, those words simply represent a motto. But for Christina Pelayo, it summarized in every way who she was. She was modest, quiet and observant, taking in everything around her and always thinking before acting. She was a realist, someone who was efficient and practical in everything she did. She was a friendly person who truly cared about those around her. Christina was born on 24, 1958 at Alexian Brothers Hospital in San Jose, California. She was the daughter of Feliciano and Ruby Cabebe. Raised in San Jose, California, she was brought up to be tolerant and trustworthy. As a child, she learned to be conscientious, responsible and punctual. These were all traits that she would carry with her throughout her life. As a young girl, Christina was always aware of how others around her felt and this quality served her well. With a deep capacity to tolerate the feelings of others, Christina was generally able to avoid conflicts. It seemed as if Christina was the family member who was always working to keep stress at bay. Preferring a quiet environment where she could concentrate, Christina also had the ability to relate well with her family and friends. Christina was raised with 4 siblings. She had an older brother, Phil, and three older sisters, Jeanie, Vicky, and Penny. Christina was constantly involved in activities with her family. Christina and her siblings had the typical rivalries while growing up but they deeply cared for each other and shared many life experiences over the years. Growing up, Christina was one of those children who didn need to be in the center of a whirlwind of activity. She was content to entertain herself. Christina was never pushy when it came to games and other activities, but rather, she was able to enjoy the pure fun these could bring. In just about everything she did as a child, Christina was intent on pleasing both the adults and the other children around her. Christina took part in a number of activities as a child. She took part in soccer. In her spare time she liked to listen to music and torment her older sisters. Christina enjoyed learning. She always had a great memory and was particularly skilled at retaining factual information. Christina was generally quiet in class, learning best through observation. She often showed great concentration and was competent at completing the tasks at hand. Good with details, Christina was painstaking and accurate in her efforts. All of these talents culminated in a successful high school career. She attended Yerba Buena High School and graduated from Metropolitan Adult Education in 1976. Christina enjoyed some courses more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers. Her favorite class in high school was science. Most folks would say that Christina was shy until they got to know her. Those who were privileged to know her well learned that she was a solid, good friend. Christina was reluctant to generalize about people, and she based her friendships on her personal experiences. Because of this, Christina best trusted those people that she truly knew. She was concerned about how those around her felt, and she always seemed to uncover the positive side of people. She could relate to others and had the ability to see their point of view, to walk a mile in their shoes, as the saying goes. The friends that she made, Christina kept. While growing up, one of her best friends was Mary Lou Flaris. Later in life, she became friends with many people. Love can be defined but must be experienced. That was so true for Christina. On 5, 1977 Christina married Pacito Gabriel Pelayo in Reno, Nevada. She was totally committed to Pacito and maintained traditional ideals about marriage. It was as if Christina naturally sensed her spouses needs, and accepted those feelings unconditionally. Although Christina disliked conflict, she did not take flight from discord, but rather sought to preserve harmony even during the most trying times. Christina was a good mother to her child. She had old fashioned parental values and could handle typical family conflicts in a fair and calm manner. Because she trusted emotions, Christina was reluctant to force issues and used gentle persuasion to resolve situations. In this way she seemed to radiate an aura of warmth and caring to those around her, always thinking before acting. In addition, Christina was a master planner. No matter how hectic life around her might be, she seemed to know and track everyones schedule. Christina was blessed with one son, Gabriel. If you gave Christina a deadline, she would meet it. At work, Christina was always on task. Without hesitation, Christina could adhere to any assignment and see it through to its completion. Her primary occupation was as the Manager at OConnor Hospital. She was employed for 25 years by Peninsula Industrial Medical Clinic then OConnor Hospital for about 12 years. During that time, Christina excelled in working with small groups in order to complete assignments. She was able to quickly grasp concrete ideas and could organize and plan the best way to accomplish things with remarkable consistency. Christina was good at staying on track and was considerate in listening to what others had to say. In this way, Christina had a true gift for being able to come up with practical resolutions to difficult problems. She was often the team member who managed to put forth a win/win solution for all parties. Christina liked to experience things first hand, in addition to simply learning about them. This quality influenced Christinas choice of leisure time activities. A methodical and patient worker, Christina preferred to set aside uninterrupted time to work on her hobbies. Her favorite pursuits were scrapbooking and going camping. Christina was content to sit quietly alone, enjoying her hobbies all by herself and could often be found just reading about her favorite pastimes. continued... |

Obituary: Alcario Sonny Pelayo, 84, of Torrance, California and Lahaina, Maui, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away on 30, 2016. Sonny was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on 11, 1931 to Rose Kalei Naauao Pelayo and Melencio Galang Pelayo. He graduated from Kamehameha School in 1949 and afterward served in the Coast Guard which led him to Northern California where he met his wife of 55 years, Mary Magdalene Silva Pelayo. Early in their marriage, he graduated from Northrop University with a B.S. degree in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. settled in Torrance, California where they became active members of the community, serving in the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, Ahahui O' Liliuokalani Hawaiian Civic Club, Kalama Hawai'i, Hawaiian Inter Club Council of Southern California (HICC), California State Assembly, Kamehameha Alumni Association Class of 1950, Lions Club International, City of Torrance Rotary Club, Gardena Nisei VFW Post 1961, the Japanese Cultural Institute (JCI) and were active members in their church. were instrumental in building the Los Angeles Hawaiian community and their legacy continues through festivals they helped to build such as the annual HICCSC Hoolaulea at Alondra Park. Sonny worked at Rockwell International as an Aeronautical Project Senior Engineer for 32 years, helping to build the US Aerospace Industry. During retirement, Sonny and Mary travelled the United States in their RV with their family and cruised the world with their best friends and he enjoyed his return to his homeland, on Maui. One of the most generous and good spirited people youve ever met, Sonny never hesitated in lending a helping hand and supplying a good joke or story. In his spare time, he also made ukuleles for all his kids and grandchildren, walked 5 miles everyday, and helped to keep McDonalds in business with his morning crew. Sonny is survived by his four of his seven children: Allen, Maile (Tui), Lono (Laurie), and Teddy (Sandy); as well as his ten grandchildren: Biggie (Vida), Keoni, Christopher (Brianne), Kalei, Kanani (Christian), Laupepa, Alec, Anuhea, Taimane (Corey), and Makana; five great-grandchildren: Sahm, Cormac Kekoa, Cillian, Manaia, and Malosi; and two siblings: Alvin and Kawailani. |
