Obituary: Oriel (Nettie) Mae Hunter Pea A woman who aged well, not through the years of living, but through the wisdom and beauty inscribed in her heart. And surely, God has blessed the life she lived from her soul. She shared the qualities of her heart with others: The fragrance of love, her steadfast persistence of courage and her unfailing, inexhaustible Spirit of giving. Oriel spent a lifetime doing service for others. She is loved and will be missed, but her contribution and influence in the lives of many will always be appreciated and remembered. She was known as momma to most. A Jewel of all Jewels, often in rare form A Spirited Queen. Oriel was born 9th, 1934 in Dallas Texas to James Hunter and Rosie Hunter. She was the eldest of six children. She grew up living with her grandparents, Nettie and r Stafford on a farm called The Stafford Edition. She often referred to Rosie as mother and Nettie as momma. She made sure we understood that when she spoke of momma it was her grandmother she was speaking of. She often reminisced about the love of her family, cherishing moments she and her brothers would swing from the trees, burst watermelons and swim in the lake. There is one particular story she would tell about her brother Henry who would swim on his back with his palms right side up and act as if he was reading the bible. She was a lover of reading and encouraged others to read as well, she often stated That reading is one of the best ways to learn. Her bed was always cluttered with books! She was an A student, who would get into trouble for being the Class Clown. She would laugh and say, I was something else. Oriel (momma) migrated to California with her two daughters (Izolia and Marian). She resided with her aunt until she was ready to move forward on her own. Once she settled in California her family grew. She was then the proud parent of (Izolia) Marie, Marian, Marvin, and Mary (Cheri). She met and married her beloved, Louis F. Pea 14th, 1964 extending the family with Marcus, Margaret and Marquel. She managed us to the best of her ability. In 1993, she suffered the loss of her husband. In the spring of 1997 she suffered another loss, her oldest daughter Izolia Marie. Oriel managed to obtain her AA degree in . Although she aspired to eventually become a Registered Nurse she did not limit her education to healthcare. She wanted to enhance her clerical skills. The opportunity presented itself in the form of the Skill . She attended, graduated and began practicing her clerical skills by obtaining a job as an administrative assistant in San Francisco. She had a passion for having a good relationship with God. She was a truth student studying The Mayans, The Rosicrucian order and was also a devoted member to Unity Church of San Leandro for over 20 years, in which she recently received a honorary award. One of her most loved passions was cooking and baking. She has cooked for many people outside the family, especially for their birthday. Anytime she was asked to cook, she was ready. Through out the years she achieved many honors, awards and certificates. She secured a position with the United States Postal Service as a mail Carrier and later returned to another one of her passions (nursing) by receiving a position as a nurse at the VA Medical (Livermore). She obtained her license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse while employed at the center. She retired in 1995 from the VA Medical (Livermore). In her retirement she lived vicariously through her children and grandchildren. Oriel leaves behind her six children mentioned above. Her grandchildren, Sonia Gideon Segrest, Alexander Daniel, Alexis Pea, Princeton Pea, Richard Daniel, Amber Bebbington, two great grand children: Garrett Toles and Katelynn Segrest. Two brothers and one sister: Herman Hunter, Harvey Hunter, Faye Johnson. Nieces: LaVera Hunter, Patricia Hunter and Veronica Johnson. Son in law: Leonard Daniel. Grandson in law: Darren Segrest. Daughter in law: Ruth Pea. Cousins: Ethel B Rice, Charles Junior White, Eugene Stafford and Andrew Robinson :her laughing, full of mischief telephone buddy. Oriel also had an extended family at Unity Church of San Leandro along with several nephews, nieces and many others that she loved. under the direction of Guerrero Mortuary Chapel, San Leandro, CA. |
