Obituary: On , 27th, 2014 loving wife and mother Marilouise Palmer, passed away at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. In 1923, Marilouise was born into a vibrant Swiss and Irish family at Morton Hospital in San Francisco. Her grandfather, an immigrant, was co-founder of Franco-Swiss Winery. Her father, Albert Volper, was born in Conn Valley and later resided at the corner of Zinfandel Lane and the Silverado Trail. In 1922 he married Marie Devlin, from San Francisco. Like his father Albert was a vintner, but the Volper ranch was a considerable one, and he also had poultry and livestock to manage. Growing up in this context, Marilouise acquired the famous Volper industriousness. There were always chores awaiting her-gathering eggs, cleaning, and helping with deliveries-but there was also time for play in the nearby Napa River. When Marilouise was twelve, the ranch was sold and the family moved to Alexander Court in St. Helena, where Albert and Marie lived until 1947. Marilouise attended the Ursuline Academy, conveniently located next to them (Albert even built a stile so that she could climb over the fence to get to school every morning). graduating from St. Helena High School, Marilouise went to live with her aunt in San Francisco and enrolled in a nurse training program at French Hospital. Six months short of certification, Marilouise left her studies to wed high school sweetheart Edward Palmer, Jr. World War II was then in its final, harrowing year and Ed was scheduled to report for duty in the Pacific theater. were joined in marriage at St. Joan of Arc parish in 1945. Ed had returned home from the war, the couple started a construction business. Marilouise answered phones, ran errands and handled payroll for the small company. Along with sister Petite, Marilouise also cleaned the houses Ed completed, preparing them for occupancy. During this time they lived at various locations around town but dreamed of building their own house: the one on Dean York Lane that would become their home for 50 years. Marilouise also worked for Dr. George Woods practice in St. Helena. In the early 1960s Marilouise stepped back from nursing to raise her sons Charlie, and then John. This was the beginning of her many years of volunteer work within the St. Helena Unified School District. Marilouise enjoyed her role as a mother and treated all of Charlies and Johns friends as if they were also her children. When John joined 4-H in the 80s, Marilouise was, of course, ready to volunteer, and she eventually organized a popular gardening group. She was also a member of the altar society of St. Helena Catholic Church. In the 90s, Marilouise and Ed retired and developed a passion for travel. In recent years her trips were limited to a few hours but she seldom turned down the chance to take a drive with her family, and she delighted old friends and former neighbors a few weeks ago when she ventured out for twilight cocktails on Memorial Day. Marilouise is survived by her son John, his wife Abigail and their children Charles and Gisella, sister Petite Abruzzini, sister-in-law Shirley Hunley and her husband Bob, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband Edward, son Charlie, sister Albertine Perata, brother-in-law Frank Perata, brother-in-law Jack Abruzzini, and sister-in-law Ramona Delong. |

Obituary: Mariella Anne Palmer, 75, passed away peacefully on Jan. 2, 2015, at her home surrounded by her loved ones. Mariella will be remembered for her strength, sense of humor, generosity and unconditional love for her family. She was born in 1939, in Chicago, the first child of Frank and Marian Knybel. She was the typical first child – fiercely independent and responsible, refusing help with such things as buttoning the back of a dress or even walking to Kindergarten. Mariella felt very protective over her brother Frank, born just 15 months after she, fighting his neighborhood battles for him until he was big enough to stand on his own two feet. When her second brother, Jim, was born, she was five years old, and thought he was the cutest human being ever born until he was big enough to start mischief. And there was always plenty of that. When she was 12 years old, Mariella moved with her mother and two brothers to Los Angeles. A few months after high school graduation, she entered the convent and stayed there for 13 years. She attributed her choice to heed her calling to a life of service in the Church to her idealism, inherited from her mother. She belonged to a teaching order, The Daughters of Mary and Joseph, and taught grades one through eight. Eventually, she decided her longing for a family of her own and for someone who would miss her when she wasn’t around meant she should leave the convent, though she maintained many strong friendships through the community. She graduated from Mount St. Mary’s in Los Angeles, with a Bachelor of Science in 1970, the year that she left the convent. Mariella then met James Palmer, through, of all things, a so-called computer dating service. In her words, she “lucked out” and married Jim in 1973. settled in their first home in Agoura Hills, Calif. Their first-born, Nancy, was diagnosed with Down syndrome. Though this was devastating at first, they quickly realized how capable their daughter would become. With the support of a strong community, they raised a beautiful, accomplished, independent, caring woman, who continues to thrive in El Cajon, Calif. Mariella described their second daughter, Nicole, as loving and sensitive to others, though independent, stubborn and impatient as a child, making life very lively around their home. In the 1980s, the family moved to Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Mariella continued her teaching career in Simi Valley, Calif., until retirement in 1998. suffering the devastating loss of her beloved husband, Jim, in 2001, and after her daughter, Nicole, married Dave Beckstrand, and had her beloved grandchildren, Ella and Aiden, Mariella decided to move to the San Diego area to be closer to them, taking Nancy with her. She loved to travel, to cook and entertain and was a super fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, often having their games playing in the background during family gatherings, despite ribbing from her Padre-fan family in San Diego. In her last year of life, she, Nancy, Nicole, Dave and their children enjoyed many camping trips and even went on a cruise to the Caribbean, taking off from one of her favorite cities, New Orleans. She fought a valiant battle against breast cancer for over a year, always maintaining her positive outlook and making sure she expressed her love and appreciation for her family and friends. She celebrated her last Christmas with her children and grandchildren opening gifts in her bed. Nicole and Dave were honored to have provided care in her last days in her home, as she had wanted, to ensure she was comfortable and surrounded by love. Mariella lived life exactly as she wanted – with its hectic pace, its occasional sorrow and abundant, incredible joy – in a family where she gave and received a great deal of love and where she will be missed when she’s not around. Mariella’s survivors include her children, Nancy and Nicole, her son-in-law, Dave, her grandchildren, Ella and Aiden, her brothers, Frank Knybel (Carolyn) and Jim Knybel (Carla), many loving nieces and nephews, as well as well as countless extended family and friends. She will be missed so much and live forever in our hearts. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Susan G. Komen San Diego, 4699 Murphy Canyon Road, Suite 102B, San Diego, CA 92123, 858-573-2760 x 105. |
