Obituary: Chester J. Plowden, 91, of Martinsburg, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 25, 2015, at the VA Medical . Born Nov. 7, 1923 in Brunswick, Md, he was the son of the late John Chester and Maude Bell Plowden. He graduated from Ramer Sumner High School, class of 1942, in Martinsburg. He attended Store in Harpers Ferry and studied colanary arts. Chester was drafted into the United States Army in 1944 and trained as a combat engineer during WW II. He met and married his wife of 67 years, the late Odis "Ms. Sugar" Plowden during his active duty tour of service in the United States Army. He retired from the VA Medical Hospital in Martinsburg, with 40 years of service in the Food Service Department. Chester was awarded the Life Time Commendation Award in 2004 by the Marshall-Holley-Mason American Legion Post #102, and the Jefferson Branch NAACP, in recognition of his loyal, dedicated, sacrificial, and courageous service to the cause of freedom during WW II. He was a member of Mt. Zion UMC in Martinsburg and a member of the United Methodist Men. He was also a faithful and active member of the First Church of God in Martinsburg. Chester was preceded in death by his wife, Odis Ms. Sugar Plowden. He is survived by two sons: John Plowden and his fiancée, Stephanie Vanorsdale, and William Plowden and his wife, Delia; four grandchildren: Shayla Murray, Brandon Plowden, Terrence Goodman, Jr., and Tamyra Walker; and two great-grandchildren: Lariah Murray and Zaeven Lewis. The family would also like to recognize Lesile Ferguson Davis, Shataya Ferguson, and Shawn Ferguson. A celebration of life will be held , 7th at 2pm at the VA Medical Church. |
