Obituary: Leaving big shoes to fill, Fred McMechan Plath passed away on 25, 2012. Born in Yakima, WA at St. Elizabeths Hospital on 23rd, 1922, Fred attended Yakima High School (now A.C. Davis) where he met Dorothy Davis who became the love of his life and then some! Following graduation they both attended Yakima Valley Junior for their freshman year, transferring to the University of Washington in 1940. Fred became an active member of the Phi Delta Gamma Fraternity but as war broke out in Europe he joined the 457 AAA Battalion of the U.S. Army. He trained and fought in England, France and Germany until 1945. As the country sought peace he returned to the University to resume his education. However, when his fathers health became poor, Fred believed it was time to return to the Yakima Valley and the family business. Fred and Dorothy were married on 6th, 1948. were blessed with three sons: Peter, Rick and Cliff. Together the family shared treasured times: growing up on Pickens Road, enjoying the Yakima Tennis Club, vacationing at Priest Lake, many family and friends excursions at Quadra Island and of course, working the then developing orchards. As the boys grew, Dorothy and Fred took time to boat and fish our beautiful Northwest passages and traveled to many memorable destinations. Their marriage and family life was respected and had a significant impact on many. His smile, quick wit, warmth and laughter were simply infectious all his life! He brought these characteristics along with his brilliance for business to all his endeavors including the International Apple Association, the Yakima Valley Memorial Foundation, Perry Technical Institute, The Nob Hill Water Association, the Yakima Greenway and Downtown Rotary. Freds primary interest was farming, from the seed to the shelves.ALL ASPECTS! Whenever Dorothy thought they needed something new for the house, Fred would purchase a new tractor or something for the farm instead! This GOOD progress and development of the fruit business was his goal. When asked about his farm experiments he said, When a foreman thinks of the experiment, I can guarantee you that his way will be the winner when all the data is collected. His discipline, charm, skill as a business man and farmer is legendary, only to be matched by his love and dedication to his wife and family. It is said that his steadfast love, patience and care for Dorothy was better marriage counseling than any preacher could ever give. His motto was YOU have a choice everyday. Are YOU going to make it a good day or not? His mother Gail McMechan Plath, his father Fred B. Plath and his sister, Delores Plath, preceded him in death. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy; his sons Peter (Bea), Rick (Lisa), and Cliff (Janie); his beloved grandchildren Dan (Bri), Leslie (Jacob) Johnson, Katy Plath, Marianne and Nick Plath, Gil and Sarah Plath; and his two GREAT-grandchildren, Davis Plath and Charley Johnson. The Plath Family is deeply appreciative and thankful for the assistance and wonderful care from Judee Hassansin, Teresa Arenas, Hope Esperanza, Judy Hayes, Sandi Cearlock and Connie Ledford. A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on , 28, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. A private graveside service is scheduled at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Obituary: 8, 1925 - 31, 2016 Dorothy Plath found overdue rest 31, 2016. Dynamic, articulate, gracious and a firecracker, she will leave an enormous void along with many smiles in the hearts and memories of her dear family and friends. Dodo, as she was most affectionately known, brought out the best in you whether you wanted it or not. Born in 1925, Dorothy was the daughter of the Yakima Schools superintendent Angus Charles Davis and Lois Tweed Davis, a schoolteacher. She grew up excelling at academics, graduating from Yakima High in 1941 at the age of 16. She attended Yakima Junior and then on to University of Washington, graduating in 1945 magna cum laude at the age of 20. She was a proud active lifetime member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Upon graduating she went to work for the Teamsters for 3 years before moving back to Yakima in 1948 when she married her equal in love, life and character, Fred Plath. Together they embraced post war life in 1950s Yakima socially, politically and civically. Dorothy became a dedicated member of the League of Women Voters, providing information and education to the public regarding political & community issues of the day. Later serving as the Leagues president and serving on its key committees. Whether writing pamphlets or organizing conventions this group was always very meaningful to her. Making sure people were properly educated was her singular passion. always! Other civic involvement included board positions on the YWCA, and the State Board of Community Education. She was instrumental in the development of the Yakima Tennis Club and a founding member of The Russians reading group. Life to her was about being active, involved and mentally stimulated! Whether raising 3 boys or golden retrievers, life on Pickens Road was never a dull moment for the Plaths or those around them. Snow skiing, water skiing at Chelan or Priest Lake with friends. teacher to some, a competitive tennis partner, bridge partner, playing piano, hunting, or fishing and oh those gatherings! Anything she enjoyed she would take on whole-heartedly! Christmas was always epic at the Plaths with Dodo/Dorothy leading carols on the piano with gusto! As she approached empty nesting she took over her sons fruit stand, capitalizing on the new and upcoming U-pick market for peaches! She became a local celebrity featured in the Yakima Herald 1977 for her canning peaches technique and recipes! She was an outspoken and often opinionated enthusiast! Dorothy had an imposing presence and a voice to match, which she used to her advantage when needed. But only with the kindest of hearts and intention to do good. Her laugh was equally quick and hearty, and she possessed a well-honed barometer for integrity and honesty. Dodo genuinely appreciated beauty in scenery, her home and the arts, and she was not afraid to get her hands dirty - literally - to make things just so. Fred and Dorothy would spend hours planning and gardening together, boating and fishing together, and playing tennis together. One year they brought the hose out and created an ice rink in their backyard. traveled to South America, Europe, New Zealand and enjoyed thoroughly boating in Puget Sound, the San Juans and BC fishing, crabbing and taking in the beautiful wild life and scenery. thoroughly loved and liked being together! In 1985 Dorothy suffered a severe stoke that left her partially paralyzed. Though it may have slowed her down Fred made certain that they both made the most of every day. With Fred at her side they continued to travel, boat and fish. got out to see the world and community around them. Looking at and planting orchards, enjoying the symphony or a show at the Capitol, baking bread, playing with their grandchildren, enjoying flowers & trees at the Arboretum, they never stopped learning. Dinner out or gathering with friends or family was always tops. Fred was tireless in seeing that his beloved wife would not miss out on anything! never stopped socializing and she LOVED holding court with her boys or anyone who would listen, keeping them on their toes for manners or actions with humor and love. She and Fred began giving back to the valley and industry that had given them so much. The Plath Pathway, Washington Apple Education Foundation Scholarships and Plath Hall at JM Perry bear their name but were gifts from the heart and were organizations that they firmly believed in and made a positive difference. loved being able to be a part of something that improved, empowered, enriched and of course educated! The many charities and individuals that had their generous attention have all seen positive impact. It made them happy to perhaps make a deep committed difference in the place they called home. Although Dodos life part II was quieter, she remained passionate and ever grateful regarding her family, friends and community. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents AC and Lois Davis, sisters Marjorie Davis Arnold and Marietta Davis Kinzig, and her loving and ever adoring husband Fred. Dorothy is survived lovingly by her sons Peter (Bea), Rick (Lisa) and Cliff (Janie); her near perfect grandchildren Daniel (Bri) Plath, Leslie (Jacob) Johnson, Katy Plath, Marianne Plath, Nick Plath, Gilbert Plath, and Sarah Plath; and her perfect GREAT grandchildren Davis, Bennett & Graham Plath and Charley and Grady Johnson. Sincere and heartfelt thanks to her caregivers who kept her comfortable and beautiful: Judee Hassanin, Lisa Teatro, Teresa Arenas, Nina Zerr, Zaundra McNamara, Hope Sanchez, Tambatha, Wilkes and Laura Wilson. A memorial service and celebration of this wonderful life will held at the First Presbyterian Church (Grace of Christ Presbyterian), 11 am 4, 2016 with a reception followed immediately after in the continued... |
