Obituary: Gary Leo Preston of Orem, age 65, passed away surrounded by his loving family on 25, 2010 after succumbing to cancer. Gary was born on 28, 1944 in Whittier, California to Byron Elmer Preston and Phyllis Inez Dodson. Gary loved movies, music, and books and instilled the love of these things in his family. When his children were young he would read to them at night and more than once he checked them out of school to see a popular movie that he was eager to share with them. He never allowed his taste in music to become dated and would often borrow his children’s music or bring home music to share with them. graduating from Sierra High School in Whittier, Gary came to Provo, Utah to visit a friend. He loved Utah so much that he decided to stay and enrolled in Brigham Young University. Gary was converted to the LDS church while studying the Book of Mormon in one of his classes at BYU. his first year at BYU he decided to concentrate on going on an LDS mission instead of immediately pursuing a degree. much preparation and hard work he was able to accomplish this goal was called to the Navajo-speaking Southwest Indian Mission in 1965. he returned from his mission in 1967 he resumed his studies at BYU. Gary loved playing and watching sports as much as possible. There was little on ESPN he wouldn’t watch. He played college basketball and baseball and enjoyed running and cycling. Gary has proudly finished several marathons and countless road races. For decades, Gary made it a point to either run or ride his bike everyday and many days he would end up doing both. He encouraged his children to be athletic and never missed a game or meet they were participating in. You could always count on Gary to be standing on the sidelines loudly cheering them on. Gary had a true love for church service and served in many different capacities. He has served in a bishopric, a high council, as a school and primary teacher, and as a scout leader, where he was able to boast as having a record amount of Eagle Scout recipients. Gary was a multi-faceted man of many interests, hobbies, and skills. He had an unwavering love and support for his family and friends. Always quick with a joke and smile to anyone he met.
