Obituary: Elizabeth (Betty) Sherrill Pry, 87, passed away surrounded by family on May 17, 2015, after suffering a stroke a few weeks earlier. Born 23, 1928 in Washington, DC, to John H. Rice and Mildred Sherrill Rice, Betty grew up in Indian Head, MD. Her parents divorced when she was age 3. Bettys mother was first a teacher and later principal of Lackey High School in Indian Head from which Betty graduated. During this time, Betty was also supported by long time domestic helper, Liza, whom both Betty and Mildred considered a part of the family. Betty later sponsored a scholarship in honor of her mother at Lackey High school. Betty was an only child, and the only offspring from her mothers four other siblings - three aunts and an uncle. Throughout her life, Betty would maintain a close connection and provide key support to her aunts and uncle - two of whom moved to Texas to be closer to Betty later in their lives. Betty, a registered nurse, received her nursing education at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. where she was a graduate of G. U.s first nursing school class in 1953. Raised as an Episcopalian, she very much valued the Jesuit Catholic education she received at Georgetown University. Although Betty and another Jewish classmate were the only non-Catholics in her class, they all knelt enthusiastically in the hospital chapel prior to final exams. Perhaps a desire to leave behind the structured environment provided by a mother who was a principal and the Catholic nuns who assisted in the oversight of the nursing students at Georgetown University, Betty would begin a new adventure in her life a couple of years after graduation. Armed with a B.S. in , Betty jumped into her car with two other nursing school girlfriends and headed west for California. As the nursing school friends made their way west, and after a stop in New Orleans to see friends, the three ended up in Houston. With nursing jobs plentiful in the burgeoning Houston medical center, the three paused their westward march long enough to get jobs to earn additional money for the remainder of the trip. All three ended up staying in Houston and getting married. Betty met her husband, Guy, at St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital in the Houston Medical , where Betty was head urology nurse and Guy was involved in Clinical Pastoral Education training. married in 1958 in Indian Head, Maryland, and took off on their honeymoon in sub-freezing weather in Guys (Texas purchased) car that lacked a heater. This year marks their 57th year of marriage. Soon, the births of her three sons, John, Karl and Scott followed from 1959 through 1962 while they lived in Houston and Guy served as an Associate Minister at St. Lukes Methodist Church. When the children came, Betty ceased nursing and focused on child rearing. Though not professionally employed as a nurse while the boys were in their early years, Betty would willingly respond to neighborhood requests for front porch nursing advice, as was noted by retired Houston Chronicle columnist Leon Hale, a neighbor in Bryan, who penned an article about the family when they departed Bryan for Winnie. Because she and Guy moved to accommodate his ministerial appointments, when Bettys nursing career resumed in mid 70s, she worked in a variety of nursing roles, including in public health, as a clinical nurse, and hospital nurse. Beginning when Guy retired and they moved to Station, Betty continued to use her nursing background by volunteering at a local non-profit public health clinic ( For All) and served over 15 years in this role, cajoling clinic visitors to adopt more healthy living habits. Although a reluctant exerciser herself, Betty faithfully did exercise dance classes with friends for many years, and until a few weeks ago was a twice-a-week gym goer (at Guys nudging). When raising their three sons with Guy, Betty lived in Houston, New Gulf, Bryan, Winnie, and Wharton. Betty put three meals on the table everyday for her three boys and husband, and tirelessly supported the boys in their many endeavors as they grew up. Coming from a long line of school teachers, Betty ended up inheriting some of the structure ways she might have been seeking to avoid earlier in life. Although one or more of the boys might on occasion seek less structure, Bettys devotion to her family ultimately paid great dividends. Betty, far from the stereotypical ministers wife, also provided key support and encouragement to Guy though out his career. Betty had two outstanding grandchildren, Michael and Sophie. With pride, she would often say to either Michael or Sophia: You e my favorite grandson/granddaughter. Michael is a year away from completing an engineering degree at UT Arlington, and Sophia is graduating high school this month, with plans to attend Texas A&M at Galveston. Bettys boys were out of the home, she and Guy lived in two other places before settling into retirement in Station, in a house Betty had the foresight to find a couple of years earlier. over 20 years in the first home they owned together, a couple of years ago Betty and Guy moved to Arbor Oaks, an independent living community. Betty is survived by her husband, Guy Pry, her three sons, Scott Pry, Karl Pry, and John Pry, her daughter-in-law Robyn Pry, and her grandchildren Michael and Sophie. Visitation is scheduled for , May 20, 2015 from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Memorial Chapel in Bryan. A memorial service will be held at A&M Methodist Church in Station, Texas at 2:00 pm on , May 21, 2015. A family graveside burial service in Bryan will be conducted earlier in the day. For those desiring, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in honor of Betty to for continued... |
