Obituary: Gilda Platt passed away peacefully in Houston, TX on 16, 2014. She was born 14, 1928 to Marcel and Teodora Guilhem in Laboulaye, Córdoba, Argentina. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, John, her parents and one brother. She is survived by her sons, Chris (Ira) and Greg (Jeri); grandchildren, Kevin (Kelly) and Carolyn Platt (fiancé, D. Caldwell Lucas, Jr.). Gilda was born and raised on a ranch in the town of Laboulaye, northwest of the capital city of Buenos Aires. Shortly after World War II, her family moved to Buenos Aires where she met John at a dance that a local community group organized to welcome in the new passenger/cargo ship where he was serving. John was instantly smitten. He walked up to her father and asked to be introduced, but there was a small problem. He spoke just enough Spanish to ask for a beer while she knew even less English. So, with his future-father-in-law translating, John proceeded to be as dignified as possible as he wooed her. Over the next few months they traded letters in broken Spanglish, until finally he got the courage to ask her to be his wife. But he knew from the first time he saw her, that she would always be his love. their marriage in May, 1951, John and Gilda moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where she taught herself both English and the local customs all while raising their two sons and with John at sea for the most part. She was active in the local PTA and Boy Scouts and served as a den leader for seven years. Outside of Gildas family, her greatest love was spending time with her friends usually while playing tennis and/or bridge. a move to Houston in the early 1970s, she combined these two passions by starting the Virginia Fats tournament \ these friends remain close to this day. A funeral service will be held , 23 at Memorial Oaks , 13001 Katy Freeway at 3:00 in the afternoon. Per Gildas wishes she will be laid to rest with John in a private interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Citizens for Animal Protection. The family would like to thank the caregivers of Instead and the Vitas Hospice outpatient staff for the wonderful care given Gilda in her last months. A very special thank you goes to her caregivers Franca, Joanna, Ketley and Christina. |

Obituary: Gertrude Johanna Platt (Oma, Gigi), age 79, born in Langenselbold, Germany, living in Newport News, Virginia, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on 18, 2014. She was German strong and fought a long, hard battle with heart and lung disease. She was preceded in death by her father, Philip Johanes Bassermann; her mother Franciska Margret Kirsh Bassermann Gates; her brother Hinerick Bassermann; step father Ronald Gates; her husbands Arthur Mercer and Wylie Platt; her son Charles Mercer; and her grandson Donnie Mercer. She is survived by her sister Franciska Ramsey and brother-in-law Don Ramsey, DeLand, Florida; her children Ronald Basserman and daughter-in-law Cynthia Bassermann, Denison, Texas, Carmen Butcher and son-in-law Randy Butcher, Joshua, Texas, Yvonne Fulton, Newport News, Virginia, Cheryl Taylor and son-in-law Travis Taylor , Sherman, Texas, Dennis Mercer, Lawton, Oklahoma, Don Mercer and daughter-in-law Patti Mercer, Lawton, Oklahoma, Rosa King and son-in-law Roy King, Denison, Texas, Una Medley and son-in-law Michael Medley, Newport News, Virginia, Wylie Platt and daughter-in-law Kim Platt, Denison, Texas; 25 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She also raised two granddaughters, Neva James and Aletha Lowry, as well as a few other children she and Wylie took in. Services are through Bratcher in Denison, Texas.
