Obituary: Grace was born on 22, 1922 in Pittsburg, TX. to Lester and Mary Aldridge. The family moved to Houston when Grace was still an infant. The settled on the east side of town, where Grace attended Jackson Junior High, and Stephen F. Austin High School, where she graduated in 1940. At Austin High, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Scottish Brigade, and was also Head Cheerleader. She had known Charles Pitner since elementary school, and their loved blossomed in their high school years. Grace loved cheering on Charles, who was Austins star tailback, as the football team went to the state semi-finals their Senior year.
Growing up in the Depression, and with Europe already at war, Grace went to work at Texaco after graduation. As America entered World War II, her long time love, Charles enlisted in the Army Air Corp. In 1943, Charles was sent to an air base in Santa Ana California, assigned as a Crew Chief with the P-38 Lightning. a few months of training new airmen, and figuring he would stay stateside, but not knowing what the future would hold, and missing Grace terribly, he asked her to marry him. Charles always said it was the lure of Hollywood that Grace agreed to come to California and marry Charles. The couple indeed was married in Hollywood, CA. on 21, 1943 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Sunset Blvd. rented a small apartment, and bought a used convertible, where they loved driving down the Pacific Coast Highway, and enjoying all the sites of Southern California. only three months into their marriage, Charles received his orders to ship out to Europe. Grace had to sell the car, and move back to Houston alone, and went back to live with her parents. The love and strong bond between Grace and Charles could never be broken, and she waited nineteen long months for his safe return at the end of the War.
The mid 1940s and 50s were happy times for Grace. 1951 brought the birth of her first son, George. It was in , 1960 that the family purchased a lot in the Memorial area of Houston. Friends could not believe they were moving so far west out to the country! Grace was always a lover of early American history and architecture. Based on visiting and reading on Colonial Williamsburg, Grace designed the house she would live in for the next 50 years. Its layout, especially with the oversized fireplace, like so many early American homes, was unheard of at the time when she built her house. Grace loved early American antique furniture, and she furnished the house with such beautiful, historic pieces. Throughout the decade, she would open her home for tours, and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, a woman from River Oaks copied her design and built a similar home in that area of Houston.
At that time, the family joined a fairly new Catholic Parish, St. Cecilias. Grace became very close to its first Pastor, Fr. Pekar. Grace was President of the Altar Society, and she was still active in her Altar Guild up until the last couple of years. She attended daily Mass for decades. She loved her Catholic faith, and dearly loved St. Cecilias.
One of Graces many talents were she was an excellent artist. She used this gift to make her own Christmas cards. Starting in the first of , she would take her sketchpad and begin drawing the cover of that years card. Inspired by her deep faith, she would also write the most beautiful verses inside the card. Grace would personalize each card by writing a paragraph to each family that received one. She continued this labor of love for over 40 years. This is but one example of the profound impact she had on those she loved.
The 1960s also Blessed Grace with two more sons, Tommy and Matthew. She dedicated her life to her husband and her sons. Whatever any of her boys needed, she was always there to help, no matter what. She always put everyone ahead of herself. Grace was a true servant of God.
Over the last 14 years, Grace became a grandmother to four children, Gracie, Annie, John, and Luke, whom she greatly loved. all brought her such joy.
Graces life is a model on how one should live. She was a saint. Charles always told Grace that if there truly are Earth Angels, she is definitely one. She would laugh and say she never did anything special, which only underscored to the family of how truly special she was and how Blessed we were to have her as our wife, mother, and grandmother.
