Obituary: Services for Martha Helen Burns Phillips, "Nanna", age 92 of Tyler, will be held at 3 p.m., , May 17, 2017 in the chapel at Lloyd James under the direction of Dr. David O. Dykes and Kevin Burdette. Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. preceding the services. Burial will be at Cathedral in the Pines.

Mrs. Phillips passed away at Hospice of East Texas on , May 14, 2017, nine days shy of her 93rd birthday. She was born Martha Helen Burns on May 23, 1924, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the third of six children to Andrew Louis and Ila Mae Burns.

Education was a significant part of her family, with her father being the Superintendent of Schools for Pine Bluff and Magnolia, Arkansas, and her mother also a teacher in the schools. Martha graduated as Valedictorian from Magnolia High School in 1942. She then continued her education at Texas Women's (now known as Texas Women's University, TWU) majoring in Economics, specializing in Dietary Science. As a part of her certification to become a Registered Dietician, Mrs. Phillips served an internship with the Veterans Administration (V.A.) Hospital in New York City, and subsequently graduating from TWU with a B.S. in Economics in , 1946.

While serving as a Dietician for the V.A. Hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi, in 1953, two of Martha's co-workers in the kitchen set her up on a date with their brother-in-law, Thomas Ray Phillips, a Highway Patrol officer for the State of Mississippi. Martha and Ray were married on 21, 1954. Martha and Ray moved to Tyler with their family in 1959 to open Phillips Hearing Aid . Martha retired from Mother Francis Hospital as the Head of Dietary in 1981. She worked in bookkeeping at Southside Bank and with Ray in the hearing aid business.

Mrs. Phillips was a devoted Christian and leader, living her life ministering to her family and to others in her church and community. She taught children's school at Green Acres Baptist Church, was active in the Outreach Clothes Closet and Meal Service, and the widows in need (WIN) ministry. Mrs. Phillips went on mission trips to Mexico with the Missions Ministry of GABC, conducting Bible Schools in these communities for years. She was a member of the Highest Praise Senior Choir and with the and Share School Class at Green Acres Baptist Church.

Martha is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years.

She is survived by her brother Alvin Burns of Dallas. Mrs. Phillips is also survived by her son Harold Phillips and wife Janice; her daughter Nancy Phillips Davis and husband ("favorite son-in-law) Frank. "Nanna" is survived by three grandsons; Robert Davis and wife Ginger, Chad Phillips and wife Whitney, and Jeffrey Davis and his wife Lauren. Nanna is also survived by one great-grandson, Thomas Roy Davis, with whom she shares the same birthdate.

Pallbearers are the three grand-sons; nephew Michael Burns; and family friend Pete McGee. Honorary Pallbearers will include John Stroud and members of the Jeff Schwartz Morning Bible Study Class at Green Acres Baptist Church.

Memorials may be given in honor of Martha B. Phillips to the Green Acres Baptist Church Foundation and to the Hospice of East Texas or a charity of your choice.

Obituary: Martha Jean Wallace Phillips, 76, born 2, 1933 went to be with her Lord , 18, 2010. Her parents were Alvin James Wallace and Marie Riddle Wallace of Mount Pleasant, TX. She was a long time resident of Dallas, TX. She grew up and matured on Swiss Avenue, Dallas, TX, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1951. In 1952 she married 2nd Lieutenant James Wiley Phillips and entered a new career as a military wife. She served with her husband in various assignments in Fort Benning, GA, Fort Ord, CA, Schofield Barracks, HI, Georgia Military in Milledgeville, GA the Army Language School in the Presidio of Monterey, CA and the Army Command and General Staff at Fort Leavenworth, KS, while her husband was a student and instructor at the college. While her husband was the Infantry Advisor to the Army of El Salvador in Central America she was an unofficial ambassador for the United States by working with the people of El Salvador. In 1971 she returned to Dallas with her two daughters while her husband was serving his second tour in Vietnam. Upon her husbands retirement from the Army in 1972 she became a civilian wife once again. She was very active in her church and various community projects. She was an active member of Kiestwood/Windsor Park Baptist Church in Desoto, TX for 27 years. In 1994 she and her husband moved from Oakcliff to north Dallas where she has resided for the last sixteen years. During her time of employment she became a Vice President of owners Funding Corporation until such time as the company moved to Michigan and she retired. In 1995 she and her husband joined Park Cities Baptist Church and became active members of Floyd Faithful School class. She is preceded in death by her mother, father and three brothers, Malcolm Wallace, Jerry Wallace and Bruce Wallace. She is survived by her Husband of 58 years Lieutenant Colonel James W. Phillips, USA Retired, adopted daughter Jean-Marie Button (Douglas) of Clark/Grand Junction, CO, adopted daughter Linda Grace McGinnis (Roland) of Knoxville, TN, five grand-children Brian Bjerke and Christopher Bjerke of Dallas (children of Linda by a previous marriage), Kathleen Button and Wiley Button of Clark, CO and Joshua McGinnis of Knoxville, TN, two great grand-children Kaylee Bjerke and Aaron Bjerke, and brothers James Wallace (Mary) of Houston, David Wallace (Bobbie), sister-in-law Charlene Wallace of Dallas and sister-in-law Shirley Wallace of Duncanville and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to thank the care givers of Martha from Staff of Dallas for their diligent work over the past 18 months. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. , 23, 2010, at Sparkman Hillcrest , 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the main sanctuary of Park Cities Baptist Church, 3933 Northwest Parkway, Dallas, TX 75225. Obituary: Marjorie J. Phillips passed away peacefully on 28th. Marjorie, a wife, mother, artist, and teacher lived for 82 years and had a wonderful life. A native Texan, Marjorie was born in East Bernard, moved to Highlands near Houston, and in 1949 married her life-long partner, Edwin Phillips. Marjorie and Ed raised two boys and two girls. While raising a family, Marjorie built a career with Ed in the US Air Force and moved her family all over the world. The hardest job in the Air Force is being an Air Force wife and she was the best. In Japan, Marjorie was a leader in the Officers Wives Club and an advocate for childrens programs. It was in Japan where Marjorie became interested in teaching aquatics and began her career as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and teacher. While stationed in Hawaii, Marjorie continued teaching aquatics, focusing on special needs children. This is where Marjorie excelled and made a world class impact advocating for special needs children. In 1978, Marjorie and Ed moved to San Antonio and she became an aquatics instructor. Marjorie continued her work with the Red Cross and expanded her work with the Texas Special Olympics. Marjorie helped train athletes who qualified for and won medals at the Special Olympics World Games. Marjorie lived a full life raising 4 children, who had 4 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
